2006-01-23 23:43:37 thai 2k definitely has good food and i have been a frequent goer..but their service lately has really dissapointed me. i placed a take out order and recieved the wrong order and had the waitress snap at me because i asked her for a reciept. i guess at thai 2k i MUST ALWAYS request a receipt concurrent to placing an order or else you have a waitress shooting lazer beams out of her eyes at you. on another occasion, i ordered brown rice where it was given to me seran-wrapped and placed in a to go box. it was sick. beware when you place orders to go. —EasyEeee
The reason they wrap sticky and brown rice for take-out is because these two kinds of rice become cool easily and turn out dry. You can ask them to not wrap your brown rice if you wish though. However, i would prefer to have a good conditioned rice that can be eaten right away when i get home without having to reheat it in the microwave. They prefer that the customers ask for the receipts before they pay because just like other restaurants, the information of your orders will be out of the screen once they have checked your orders out. Only managers are able access into restaurant's sale to get it out again. —RegularsToo
2006-02-19 15:07:18 The entree portions are way too small and I hate that they charge extra for rice, which should come with every meal or at least every curry dish. They will adjust the spiciness to your taste, and be careful what you wish for! The Gang Kiew Wang was yummy, as well as this seafood dish that contained both shrimp and squid, which isn't on the online menu, oddly enough. —JennaChan
I agree with the rice comment. Are you expected to eat the curry like it's soup? I don't really understand why rice isn't provided with all the entrees.
2006-02-20 14:00:35 This place is just after your money and has terrible service. I ordered a dish that was listed as $8.95 in the menu I was given when I sat down. When the bill came, they charged me $12.25 for claiming that dinner prices apply during lunch hours on holidays. I pointed out that they had given me a menu that misrepresented the prices of the dishs but they would honor the menu I had been given. Is it worth $3 to lose a customer? —DavisProfessor

If you paid three dollars more than you have expected and got lunch portion, then i would may be feel sorry for you. 2006-03-28 16:15:54 They used to allow you to get things "Thai Hot". I miss it. They only let you have it if you beg now. Supposedly some customers would order it not thinking it would be that hot and send the dishes back to the kitchen after they figured out they couldn't take it. 2006-04-13 13:54:16 I agree that this is the best Thai in town. Katie, the owner is the most adorable woman ever, always talking to customers and making you feel welcome. The atmosphere is warm and romantic, and I never regret my order decisions. Always count on the Monthly Specials to awe and satisfy. The only thing I miss is the Thai Spice which once upon a time was requestable. But now, thanks to some pansy who didn't like how spicy it was when they ordered "spicy" you have to BEG and plead for a dish that will make your eyes bulge and your tongue say "howdy"... My dad always used to say that. Anyhow, they do give you a spice rack upon request which includes the spices they would have previously used. Service has been good since I've gone, and they've added some new servers to their payroll. Good call on the part of the restraunt. The new additions are charming and eager to please. —MazyDesmond
2006-05-11 02:06:30 I thought the Thai Iced Tea was hella good. I think it was the best I have ever had. The angel wings are very tasty. The green curry was amazing...very good. We also go pad thai which was yummy. At the end, we had leftovers because we saved room for the mango with sticky rice. I have never had it before and thought it was okay but my gf said that there was way too much coconut milk so i don't know....at the end, they did give us the wrong bill but that's not a big deal —ChrisLee
2006-05-14 15:58:53 I found 2 hairs in my pad see-ew. The waitress told me she could only take my item off the bill, but my boyfriend had also ordered the pad see-ew. I told her that both our dishes were obviously cooked together and we are not paying for either, but would gladly pay for the drinks. Then she came back and asked me to GIVE HER THE TWO HAIRS...and then came back again and said "well, were the hairs sitting on top of the food because they just don't look stirfried" are you kidding me? I will never go back there. So rude.. and really creepy. —DepartedUser

The reason I have to ask for the two hairs is because the people in the kitchen need to see it if it was really their hair, and you were the one showing me the hair. If you were sincerely sure it was not your hair, why do you care if I ask for it or not? I am sure those two hairs were not in the food, at least it was not being stirfried with the noodles from the kitchen. First, everyone in the kitchen wear a hat so there is no way their hair will be in the noodles. Second, I have been working in this business for so long, I know what the hair looks like when it touches the heat, and the two hairs did not look like anything like it. Third, if the hair were really in the noodles while stirfired, it would be moistured, it should have all the fats from the oil, some pieces of egg and noodle on it. But the hairs were dry!!! Forth, you did not tide your hair. Your hair was curly and black. Exact same color as the noodles you found. People in the kitchen, not even one person that day has curly hair. So what do you think I should make the assumption from all of that. Since I was the waitress, I could not say these things out loud to you in the restaurant. But you decided to write a comment on this page, I have to make it clear as well that I did not intend to be rude to the customer. You and your boyfreind were actually the one who were rude. Surely I was the one who asked all these questions becuase I was the one in the situation when you found the hair, but I was not your server. I did not even serve your food, it was another waiter all along. After paying for the drinks, you and your boyfreind did not even leave any tips for another wait who serve you from the beginning. What did he do wrong? I am so glad that a customer like you are not coming back again.—YourWaitress

2006-05-19 10:12:37 I agree that going so far as to inspect hair found in food is a little overboard. It's always nice when businesses give customers the benefit of the doubt. However, I don't think it's unreasonable that the waitress only took the food with the hair in it off the bill. Just because you and your boyfriend ordered the same thing doesn't justify, in my opinion, not having to pay for any food. —AdamSchneider

2006-05-25 21:50:42 I've eaten here before and I too have found a hair in my food. I didn't mention it to the staff because I didn’t really care. However, if someone does take issue with a hair in their food I believe it is the establishment's responsibility to compensate the patron without hassle. I cannot believe a waitress would have the audacity to make accusations against customers, especially in this public forum. I've never enjoyed the service here, it always seems like too many people are loafing around while I'm waiting to have my order taken. Also, what does it matter at what point the hair became a part of the meal (before or after cooking) or if it belonged to a member of the kitchen or waiting staff? And seriously, are you some kind of hair/food forensic scientist? Exactly how often does hair appear in your food that you can examine its moisture content and know its origin? If I do ever eat here again I certainly won't ask for an extra fork or a water refill for fear of public retribution. —BrandonPowell

2006-05-26 08:57:13 I ate here last week based on recommendations on this page. My wife and I were not impressed. Of all the Thai places we've been to in Davis, we both agreed this was the worst. The food was definitely edible, but lacked flavor/spice. Furthermore, why do you have to pay extra for rice when you order curry dishes? All in all, this place isn't bad, but I think there are better Thai places in Davis. —AdamSchneider

I was disappointed at the lack of options, it seems the menu has been cut in half since the last time I ate here. I've always found their service great, whenever I get takeout its always packed very well. To the above comment about the hairs. "2006-06-23 12:10:23" Rob and I happened upon 2K Thai, when our favorite Thai place in Davis, Thai Nakorn was closed for some renovations. I was crushed as I had my heart set upon yummy Thai treats. Rob suggested we simply go home. I chuckeled and insisted we could simply go down a few blocks to 2K Thai! I had heard mixed things about the place, but surely it will do, and who knows, may even be better?!
This is called, "tempting fate."
At first walking in the shabby enterance I was shocked. Exceptionally contemporary design on the bar, gorgeous tumeric and saffron colored walls, and lighting that gave the whole place a deep emotion. The wait staff were dressed all in black, with a simple splash of solid pastel color due to their ties. I was impressed, this was the kind of restaurant design you don't find in Davis, and something the entire student crowd craves, what with their rap music and OC addiction.
Anywhose, the fashionably designed menus were delivered and we were seated. The menu opened up to a quick and touching history of the restaurant. The owners, both with names starting with "K" (not a Y2K reference), opened the restaurant in order to give their three children the chance to have a quality American education. The father passed on, and she keeps the restaurant as a standing testament to him and their kids. Sweet. I felt better about this choice.
We sat down and looked around, admiring the decor a little more and we were brought out Thai Iced Teas. The walls were inspiring futrue kitchen desgins, but the art on the wall... like a crack addict blind man obsessed with Thai mythology in a spray paint medium. It just a severe beating for the eyes. Ah well, at least I had my sweet yummy tea; which I finished in about 3 good sips. Apparently it's all show with a very tall glass and a whole lot of ice. Then I was informed that refill's were extra.

Soon our Mun Tod came. Deep fried sweet potato battered in coconut batter, served alongside a sweet and sour sauce that had a slight kick to it. This was damn good. Good enough to make ya' slap yer mama good. Plus, the presentation was something you would expect to see in Mikuni's or Dragonfly, not at anywhere in Davis. A welcome surprise all around.
Then our meals came, and all went screaming downhill. Screaming like a schoolgirl screaming. Both meals were presented in a trendy fashionable manner. I approved with glee. Then I bit into it.
I had ordered Gai Yang, charcoal broiled half chicken"marinated" in Thai herbs. I put marinated in quotes because the marinade was fiendishly bland. In fact the marination time was probably a quick 29 seconds. The Thai herbs weren't present. Niether was the heat, and I mean temperature wise. It was just warm. Plus, the trendy plates were not even, so my cutting the chicken served as entertainment for all around.
Rob didn't believe me about the taste so I let him have a try, to which he made the same blank stare I did.
"That's marinated? You sure? Tastes like dry chicken..."
"Yeah, well... I'm hungry, I'll eat it anyways. How's yours?"
Rob took a big bite of his Pad Kee-Mow, a rice noodle dish fried with egg, chicken, and a variety of vegetables. No taste. At all. And again massive heat problems, but this time in both temperature and flavor. I want my Thai food blazing, enough to wake a comatose man and then set him on fire. This almost matched up to a sprinkle of Taco Bell Mild. Second, it had been flash fried, the outside had been toasty warm, but the the core of each piece of food never absorbed any heat, so it cooled rapidly. In five minutes it was stone cold.
This had been the most bland, dissapointing meal I had had in a long time. And, slightly disgusting as we later discovered a hair in my food.
That's it, we were done. I didn't want to argue. (Normally there would have been a storm, people can attest to this, but I had had a long day at work and this was supposed to be quick and simple.) This was over. I wanted to go home. If only the waiter would remember we existed and would give us the bill.
Eventually he did. We paid the damn bill. We left. I carved a quick mark-o-satan on the corner, and left, hopefully dooming the cook's soul. We went to Safeway and bought a box of cereal.
Seriously. We got "Oats and More with Strawberries." Good shit. I highly suggest it.
Overall, I would give 2K Thai a 1.5 out of 5. I only give zeros for food poisoning and attempted murder. This was just food rape. Props to the architecture and plating. The appetizer and Thai iced tea were good (though again, fascist tea). But if you want Thai food in Davis, go to anywhere else.—ProtoGarrett
2006-06-28 11:56:40 I really like 2K Thai. I've never had bad service there, and find the food to be delicious. I have taken friends there and have never heard any complaints about it. I will admit that I cannot handle the least bit of spice, so perhaps the complaints from other people who want spicy Thai food are accurate. I went with a friend recently who ordered a noodle dish which ended up being super spicy to me, and sort of spicy to him. I highly recommend the Tom Kah Gai. So good. —AliceSaurus
