The AMSA Heartbeat Run, hosted by the American Medical Student Association, benefits UC Davis student-run medical clinics and the Bayanihan Clinic, all providing free primary health care to underserved populations of Sacramento. The HeartBeat consists of a 10 kilometer run, a 10 kilometer or 5 kilometer team run/walk, a kids’ 1K run and a health fair at UC Davis School of Medicine. The event emphasizes family participation and courses all start and finish at the School of Medicine on the campus. The 5K course takes runners, walkers, stroller-pushers, and pet-pullers through UC Davis' arboretum while the 10K course extends through flat farmland and tree lined roads west of campus. Timing and finish line operations are professionally managed.
Clinics benefiting from this event are staffed by volunteer UC Davis medical students, undergraduates, and area physicians. 2006 was the 16th annual running of this volunteer-organized event and sponsors included Ink Monkey Graphics; Tandem Properties; Sherwood, Wilson & Kyo; Fleet Feet; Road ID; Ace Hardware; and Sweet Briar Books.
