The Cal Aggie Cycling Team offers opportunities for individuals of all skill levels to compete in road, mountain, and track cycling events. The club provides a welcoming environment for new riders with training camps and clinics offered to help develop skills essential to riding in race situations.

In addition to mentoring new riders, the team consistently ranks among the best on the state level, winning 1st in the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference (WCCC) in 2001, 2007, and 2009, as well as on the national level, winning the National Collegiate Road Cycling Championships in 1994, 2001, 2006, and recently in 2009.

Schedule

The Collegiate cycling season begins in the Fall, around the first week of school, with mountain bike racing, which continues through October and November. If you would like to race mountain bikes, contact the Mountain Bike Coordinator, Brendan Connors: <bwconnors AT gmail DOT com>.

Around the same time in the Fall, the team begins leading road rides of mind pace and distance to teach group riding skills and introduce new riders to the sport. These rides traditionally leave Monday-Friday from the Bike Barn] on campus at 3:15pm. These rides are great opportunities to meet the team and develop a base of fitness for the rest of the season. During this time the team also hosts skills clinics and a weekend long scenic training camp in Bodega Bay.

Training ramps up during winter, in preparation for the Road Racing season, which takes place from about February to April. After the road season ends, and through the summer, many members will compete in non-collegiate road races, as well as beginning mountain bike specific training for the coming mountain season in the Fall.

Categories

Racing is structured around categories (A-D for men, and A-C for women) D and C being the beginner categories, and A being the most experienced riders. The lower categories generally do shorter races distance and time wise, but all categories count toward the overall team score.

The entire team competes in the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference (which is mostly California + Reno) and travels to schools as far away as Cal Poly SLO and University of Nevada, Reno. The total of the points from all the categories from all the races determines the overall Conference Winner. The key to our success in 2009 was our strength in every category.

After the Conference Championships, the members of the A team, men and women, travel to Nationals, to compete against the other Division 1 schools across the country.

Interested in Joining?

The best way is to show up at the 3:15 rides in the Fall, or to come to the weekly club meetings at night, also starting in the Fall (check the website for a time and place, to be announced)
