Always a full dessert case, and all the desserts were fabulous. Lunch entrees, too, were good, especially the vegetarian options. I used to eat at Ciocolat at least once a week. That said, the quality of the food selection, the flavor of the food, and the service (there are never enough people working, it seems) have declined so much over the years that I only now go to this restaurant when a colleague insists on a meeting there. (In the case of 3rd and U I feel they really just want to be a lunch place, but they could get so much more business if they consistently opened at the same time every morning and had the same items available.) In the case of Ciocolat, I usually avoid going there because if I am going to take a 20 or 30 minute break from work, I don't want to spend it standing in line. I always feel bad for the employees there, because it isn't their fault they seem to be the only one scheduled to take orders, make drinks, and serve drinks and food. I like the food and drinks here and the unique atmosphere, but they've become a joke to my co-workers and I and we don't come here anymore even on our personal time due to the painfully poor service. How hard would it be to have a second person around to help from morning through lunch? The amount of business that they would keep or re-gain I think would pay for it. --["Users/Butterfly"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Ciocolathttp://daviswiki.org/Ciocolat2009-07-30 12:14:31OliviaYComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Ciocolat<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 154: </td> <td> Line 154: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2009-07-30 13:14:31 nbsp I've been here twice now. The south-facing eaves were festooned with cobwebs, there were leaves all over the lawn and shrub beds, one of the two pots of plants at the top of the entry steps was un-watered and half dead, and there was litter strewn around as well on the tables out front. The litter on the tables included food scraps, which was especially unattractive. The entire place has an air of pretentiousness. I realize it's European so it's a little unavoidable, but it seems to draw in the students interested in pseudo-intellectual conversation ... and uppity Democrats. Beyond that impression, it's a nice place. They serve really good desserts and the pricing is fairer than I expected. This particular place, located so close to the heart of the UC Davis campus, is a gem in itself partially due it's wholly unacademic appearence. You'll find no beaten couches and college garage bands here. No, instead a few quiet students on their laptops, professors conversing, and local Davis residents gathering for tea and sweets. A large tier of white angel cake, a layer of an unidentifiable sweet cream (honestly, I really have no idea what it was 'cause I ate it so fast, but seconds please!) and a thick layer of blackberry mousse. The whole thing covered in piles and piles of white chocolate shavings! It was embarrassing salivating all over the display case. Towel please?<br> - <br> - My eyes started to tear up after one bite. The play of flavors and textures between the cake, mystery creme, mousse, and white chocolate was bliss. I honestly don't think I have ever had a cake this good in my entire life. When I die, I want to be re-incarnated as this cake.<br> - <br> - I pretty much threw a tantrum when Rob insisted we trade. He gave me his Orange Chocolate Mousse Cake. This was a beautiful orange mousse, sitting on top of a small layer of chocolate cake. Sounds great no? Yeah, well I thought it would be great too. The orange mousse tasted like whipped cream mixed with Orange Extract, and it totally overpowered the cake which could have been missing all together and you really wouldn't have known the difference. Given, though, I can see other people enjoying this, but I myself shrug it off with indifference.<br> - <br> - Now while Ciocolat is overall a great place, there are downsides. The people working there, while friendly, seem slightly reluctant to be there. They don't seem to know a whole lot about what their selling, and their coffee is way to watered down. The staff could use some tasting and training to make them a little more excited and knowledgeable about what they are offering to the customer.<br> - <br> - Overall, I give Ciocolat a 4 out of 5. I noticed the first one crawling on the ceiling, it fell and eventually died on top of the display case, but not before it spent a few minutes running around on the croissants (seriously), another one barely missed death by the delivery man as it ran across the floor and another was actually already dead (smashed) when I spotted it under the table I was sitting at. Really sad, I doubt I will ever go back. --["Users/Kaite"]<br> - ------<br> - 2008-07-11 15:50:25 nbsp I can get desserts much cheaper, cleaner, and prettier at some place else. We used to love this place, but the last time we went the 2 out of 4 deserts were "stale". After bringing this to the attention of the staff, they gave me some half hearted answer. They just said that that was how the thing was supposed to be, what a bunch of $@#%. Also, never get one of their whole cakes from the back as they are always "Not quite ready", or frozen solid. I asked for a small "fruity" cake for my son's preschool graduation party. They said that they didn't have any in a small size ready, but had a blueberry in the larger size in the back. I asked if it was ready to serve, because we were on our way to the party. They assured me it was ready. I paid for the larger (More expensive) cake, while they were in the back boxing it up. When we got to his party, we took it out to start cutting it for the kids, and it was frozen SOLID. Try to explain to 20 4yr olds that they can't eat the pretty cake in front of them. Its REALLY hard. I called the shop and asked to speak to the manager, he said if I brought this one back, he could give me a small chocolate one instead. He didn't offer to give me my $$$ back, or to apologize. His thing was, I should have checked it before I left. How was I supposed to do that?, jam my finger through the middle of the cake at the register, and say, "Hey, this cakes too FROZEN for me to cut, let me stick my finger in a few more so I can find one thats ready." That being said, go to Konditorei on 5th St. by Mace Ranch, they have good deserts, and the staff is nice. --["Users/Aaron.Curtin"]<br> - ------<br> - 2008-08-08 09:15:00 nbsp What's with this place lately? Their eggs benedict is the best in Davis and I miss it! The food/coffee continue to be of high quality but the owners and staff seem to be on a steady diet of horse tranquilizers as the service has become painfully, absurdly slow. The staff is always pleasant but in way over their heads (have to disagree with earlier posters - the problem is not the workers themselves, in my experience, but rather the constraints of their situation). The management is also friendly but needs to do something about the service environment. A place this close to campus should be a place where one can quickly drop in for a coffee or espresso on the way to class, but good luck. Management: please do something to help out your overwhelmed staff and make service more efficient! More employees at peak times, a separate area for ordering/drink pickup, something? Every time you go in there, the staff seems to be brand new and thus very slow at doing even the simplest tasks. Usually this is a sign of poor management or underpaid workers... can't say whether that is true in this case, but I do wonder. And often you go in to find a very limited selection of items. Aside from that some of them do not know what they are doing. I ordered a cappucino on one occasion and watched the girl remake it twice (she did not know how to make foam when steaming the milk) before she called someone over to do it for her. I believe what she said was "this is the last time i am trying this, you do it." When I got the cappucino the glass had dark hairs on it, and on top of the foam, very disgusting. They remade the cappucino. I did not post specifics to not hurt anyones feelings, and now I have forgotten what made me so fed up in the first place.<br> + <br> + The last two times I have been to ciocolat, however, the employees were much nicer. The desserts though, NOT good. The mousse is always excellent, but I ordered cake, which was dry and tasteless. Somehow it managed to leave a gross sugary film in my mouth despite its lack of flavor. --["Users/Chantal"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Ciocolathttp://daviswiki.org/Ciocolat2007-11-08 22:43:21MAIRAComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Ciocolat<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 186: </td> <td> Line 186: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2007-11-08 22:43:21 nbsp this place is gooood for desserts..a little pricey but it is nice and fancy and a cute place to eat dessert...the workers are really nice too..maybe this is a good place to study..cause i saw at least three people there at 10 doing homework or reading...has a warm atmosphere..and the dark fudge there is delicious...yumm --["Users/MAIRA"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Ciocolathttp://daviswiki.org/Ciocolat2007-10-13 21:07:57davistudentComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Ciocolat<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 184: </td> <td> Line 184: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2007-10-13 22:07:57 nbsp This place is so cute and in a great location, but it can be painful to order a drink here. There is no system among the workers and getting a drink can take forever. The management needs to either hire more experienced workers or train them properly. They often have more than one person making drinks at once, reaching over one another and confusing things. It took about 4 people to get an iced latte, perhaps one of the easiest cafe drinks to make. The also ridiculously steamed the milk and melted all the ice. The coffee is fine (although the mochas are WAYY too chocolatey for me but I think I'm picky about drinks being too sweet). The desserts are of course AMAZING (albeit ridiculously expensive, but what are you gonna do?). The atmosphere is nice, with the porch seating and downtown location its really great during the summer. Some of the employees are sort of questionable though, and thats really my only problem with the place in general. I guess its just that you'd think that a nice fancy little cafe like that would be really good about having somewhat professional service going on but I've had various servers who just give off a bad representation of the place. Stuff like 1) if you ask them about a dessert in detail they'll act like they have no idea whats going in regards to at least trying to act like they work there and should know at least a little about the product, 2) reallllly slow line, no matter when you go they always take forever ringing people up, on more than one occasion people appear to just always act new in regards to having to check the menu behind them to rings things up and poor communication between cashiers and the people making the drinks/food 3) some of the girls there dress REALLY unprofessionally, like hoochie hollister booty sweatshorts and super small tanktops that could hardly be called pjs are just worn under an apron as their 'uniform'. Kinda sloppy if you ask me considering how fancy the place is in most other respects. --["Users/NatalieKitchiner"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Ciocolathttp://daviswiki.org/Ciocolat2007-08-01 15:01:26KevinChincommentization <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Ciocolat<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 176: </td> <td> Line 176: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- <br> -</span> --------<span>------------------------<br> -</span> The managment at ciocolat makes a big effort to hire the slowest (in every sense) people they can find. </td> <td> <span>+</span> ------<span><br> + 2007</span>-<span>08</span>-<span>01 15:51:17 nbsp</span> The managment at ciocolat makes a big effort to hire the slowest (in every sense) people they can find. </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 180: </td> <td> Line 179: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> I told the girl we had been waiting there for 20 minutes while she figured how to read a menu; I was outraged and asked for the manager, who was unfortunately not there.
