As far as I understand, Comparative Literature has its own department...it might be the case that the department separated from the English Department earlier?

Having taken a couple courses from both departments, I think the English major should be considered more as a language&culture department, where the focal point is on the English language and the English culture(the latter part doesn't seem to apply as well here)—much like, say, German or other foreign language majors.
I would agree that Comparative Literature is more literature based...and that there seems to be a greater emphasis on genre studies (whereas English seems to be more focused on periods...but the genre study vs. movement study distinction may not be significant)
But I am rambling here& these are only my opinions, which may/may not be accurate. Will try to form more coherent thoughts once Sept-moving craziness is over.
