The Cool Davis Initiative is the brainchild of the Cool Davis Foundation, which works extensively with the City of Davis, local businesses, community organizations, and local residents to inspire and empower the Davis community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Launched in 2010, the Initiative's goal is to engage 75% of the community in pursuing a low carbon lifestyle within 5 years.

The Cool Davis Initiative and the Village Homes homeowners association are hosting a
350.org event, "An Evening in Honor of Planet Earth," featuring readings by internationally acclaimed author Kim Stanley Robinson and original songs by local musicians Andrew Corbett, George Haver, James Williams, Scarlet Huber and emcee, Eve West Bessier. Robinson will read from his climate change trilogy, "Science In the Capital," which is composed of "Forty Signs of Rain," "Fifty Degrees Below," and "Sixty Days and Counting."
The public is invited to sample homemade desserts and iced tea and enjoy heavenly music and compelling storytelling in the Village Homes Community Center at 2661 Portage Bay East. You can also sign up for a walking tour of the sustainable living features of Village Homes, including a passive solar home, from 6:00-6:50 p.m. The focus is on how to move beyond fossil fuels, so people are encouraged to come on bicycles, skateboards and foot.
On September 24, people from all around the world will join in a worldwide rally to demand solutions to the climate crisis. Three hundred fifty parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts and progressive national governments are saying is the safe upper limit for CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere. The planet's atmosphere has climbed to 392 parts per million with troubling results for our climate.
More details and ticket purchases are available on the event website; see also the
Enterprise's article covering the event.
2010 Climate Action Work Days
On October 9, 2010, the Cool Davis Initiative organized a series of workshops, work parties, and service projects designed to educate the community about the impact our lifestyles and daily practices have on our planet and to encourage practical, environmentally-positive change in our daily lives. Volunteers, community leaders, and participating organizations worked on service projects simultaneously across Davis.
On October 10, 2010, the Cool Davis Initiative held an environmentally-themed art, music, education, and food festival at the Veterans Memorial Center, inviting the broader Davis community to celebrate the efforts of volunteers and activists on the 10/9/10 day of service.
Events offered something for everyone, taking place in multiple stages, rooms, and venues throughout the interior and exterior of the center, and included presentations by local businesses and organizations, a melodrama by ACME theater company, new dance and ballet performances, a children's drama, "The Search for King Carbon," live music by Tree-o, Eve West Bessier and choruses, as well as inspirational speakers, demonstrations by local organizations and businesses, and free food provided by local restaurants such as Dos Coyotes, Cafe Bernardo, and Ciocolat.
