This page is for discussing the contents of Counseling and Psychological Services.
This page should, IMO, be an index page. What would people think of renaming this to "UC Davis Counseling and Psychological Services"? I'm not going to do it just yet because it's got a lot of links, and if people don't like the idea, it's going to be a lot of wasted effort. There's already a Counselors and Therapists page, but it's not a very comprehensive index for the category, and people are probably at least as likely to search for "counseling" as "counselors." Thoughts?
Counseling and Psychological Services is the name of the unit. Maybe this page needs to have a link to psych services or something at the top, but this page should be about the unit. —WilliamLewis
But the unit preempts a huge area of services... which coincidentally matches the terminology the Wiki uses for collecting info about most of the services in Davis. See, e.g., Emergency Services, Hauling Services, Legal Services, Janitorial Services, Security Services, Towing Services, Social Services, County Services, Taxi Services, Tree Services (which could probably be combined into Landscaping, which happens not to be a "Services" page), Medical Services, Massage Services, Shipping Services, .... the list goes on a long way. My feeling is that the value added by having a good index page is substantial, the name taken by the UCD division is the one best suited for it, and the harm resulting from renaming the UCD division to "UC Davis Counseling and Psychological Services" is minimal to nonexistant. —TomGarberson
I was torn, but now that you put it that way, it makes sense. I say go for it. —CovertProfessor
The harm of leaving this page about the UCD unit and having a link to a general psych services page at the top is also minimal. Is someone wanting to look up information on CAPS going to type UCD CAPS? Probably not. —WilliamLewis
The harm is that several people now (over the course of a number months now) haven't realized that we have a page for counselors and therapists. It's hard to find. Whereas students are likely to just search on CAPS, which will be linked from the new page in any case. I've never heard anyone call it anything other than CAPS. As long as the search on CAPS brings them to the right place, it should be fine.
The harm you mention can be remedied with a link at the top of the page (which I just added). Changing the page to another topic causes harm in that it breaks off-wiki links that may have existed since 2005.
You mean the links I updated last night? :) "Counselors and Therapists" encompasses a fairly narrow sub-section of the broad category of counseling and psychological services. Psychiatry, for example, would not fit into the counselors and therapists group. Support Groups might or might not. Emergency Psychological Services certainly wouldn't tie in. I don't think the fact that UCD has a department with a given name should prevent us from creating a better resource here, when the UCD page is more accurately described by identifying it properly. —tg
Well, we can still have a general directory page that doesn't involve using the name of a UCD unit. I like "mental health." And yes, I will clean up all the links you changed last night if we can come up with a better name that encompasses all these services. —wl
Mental health would work. —tg
Works for me. —cp
I just made some edits. What is UC Davis Resources>Academic & Staff Assistance?
