Credit unions are the cooperatives of the financial services industry. Instead of profits going to owners or shareholders, the profits are returned to the members (usually account holders) in the form of lower fees, better loan rates, interest bearing checking accounts, etc. Though they generally offer the same services as banks, credit unions have restrictions on membership, such as residency or employment.
