Davis Community Meals is a non-profit, non-denominational organization whose mission is to provide low-income and homeless individuals and families with housing, food, and human services to help them rebuild their lives. It was founded in 1990 by The Episcopal Church of St. Martin and others. They serve two meals a week, operate a resource center, provide emergency shelter, and transitional housing. It is one of the Homeless Resources in Davis.
The meals are served at The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Tuesdays 5:45PM-6:30PM and Saturdays 11:30AM-12:15PM. The room seats 64, with typically 32 people showing up on Tuesday and about 20 people on Saturday. During the summer, meals are often served outside. The food is mediocre (rating=4 on my 1-9 scale), but at least it's nutritious. It's worth all that you pay for it. The volunteer servers place the food on your cafeteria tray, but you can choose not to have any item. Some of the items are vegetarian. For truly vegan (and tastier) food, there's Food Not Bombs, but they only serve on Sundays.
Volunteers are needed year-round for food preparation, cooking, serving, and cleanup. Other volunteer duties within the shelter/transitional housing program include evening (6pm-10pm) and overnight (9pm-8am) shelter monitors, with the greatest need during weekends — weekday help is typically needed in the Resource Center from 8am-noon. Different groups, usually church affiliated, serve each time.
The Davis Community Cold Weather Shelter is looking for volunteers. We need volunteers from 6pm-11pm and overnight volunteers from 6pm-7:30am. For more information please contact the volunteer coordinator at 530-220-4089.
The Davis Community Shelter is also looking for volunteers. Many opportunities are available. Please contact the volunteer coordinator at 530-220-4089.
