Delta Lambda Phi national fraternity has provided social, service, and recreational activities for gay, bisexual, and progressive men. Delta Lambda Phi has been a constant presence in the Cal Aggie community since the chartering of the Xi Chapter in 1989.
History
In Washington, DC, in October 1986, three gentlemen established a trust to create a social fraternity free from discrimination based on sexual orientation—the donors regretted such an alternative organization did not exist during thier upbringing. Appointed as Trustee, Vernon L. Strickland, III, administered the founding of Delta Lambda Phi National Social Fraternity: creating its crest, selecting its mascot, and designing its rituals. In April 1987, Strickland initiated 24 men into the fraternity’s founding-Alpha Chapter.
Brothers of the Xi Chapter
Coming from different regions, ethnic backgrounds, cultures, academic majors, etc., the Xi Chapter is composed of a diverse array of young men. Regarded as a leader in the Sacramento Region for providing social and service activities for the LGBT community, and recognized for its civic participation and activism on issues of gender, equality, and education, the chapter finds strength through the individual contributions of each person. Outside of the fraternity, brothers continue in the tradition of excellence with community leaders and academic scholars proudly counting themselves a brother of Delta Lambda Phi.
Xi Chapter Recognitions
Beyond pride in the individual accomplishments of brothers, the Xi Chapter holds many honors and recognitions. For 2008, the DLP Xi Chapter has been named the fraternity's regional chapter of the year and recently received the distinguished honor as national chapter of the year. In the Spring of 2009, the ASUCD External Affairs Commission Chair issued the chapter a Citation of Honor for their involvement in the local community, and at the conclusion of the 2008-2009 school year, local PVSA Administrators presented the chapter with the Gold President's Volunteer Service Award on behalf President Obama and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation in recognition of the chapters outstanding volunteer record.
Events & Activities
The Xi Chapter rushes twice a year, in mid October and in early April. Their events include fundraisers for the local LGBT resource center, involvement in progressive programs on sexuality, gender, and queer issues. The chapter is involved in regional and national conferences bringing DLP men together from across the country. The chapter takes trips across California. Some of their recent trips have included San Francisco, San Diego, the mountains, and the coast. The chapter hosts community events, such as Davis is Burning, and brothers-only events, such as potluck get togethers, and has a strong relationship with Lambda Delta Lambda, the alternative women's sorority.
Delta Lambda Phi is a place to meet men—regardless of sexual orientation—who are involved in promoting strong friendships, bonds of brotherhood, and acquiring networking skills and experience. They do anything from bowling at the MU, fieldtripping to Gay Day at Great America, to exploring the mines of Placerville. Additionally, the fraternity hosts Davis is Burning, which serves as the grand finale of UC Davis Pride Week. They also run Best Sorority Forever.
