2005-12-22 14:18:01 We should adopt a convention for departed businesses. Antonio's Take and Bake and Departed Businesses: Re-Runs Thrift. Which is better? —ArlenAbraham

This came up a while back. How about BusinessName R.I.P. or R.I.P. Businessname. Or keeping the name as is, but putting an icon of the grim reaper, an RIP tombstone, or Yakov Smirnoff's career? Also, when a place is no longer, what should we do with the comments? CraigBrozinsky

If you want to rename the page after they leave the Earthly realm, you could use "Departed/Re-Runs" or "RIP/Re-runs" or "Former/Re-runs". Just consider:
-
1- Sometimes one store closes, but the chain remains
-
2- Sometimes one store closes, but others remain locally
-
3- Sometimes a store closes temporarilly to reopen at a new location
-
4- Sometimes just the name changes and the owners remain. Or vice versa.
-
Good points. In terms of names, RIP is morbid and departed & former seem a bit too abstract. How about "Historical/Re-runs." And why don't we make a subheading of departed businesses for "previous incarnations of current businesses" and have the link point to the living page. There, previous locations, owners, or names can be noted, and the living page will have the appropriate name for #2 & #3 & #4, and Historical/ for #1. —CraigBrozinsky

I was thinking of doing Historical/Name, but I prefer MG's suggestion of doing BusinessName/Historical. We should probably also have a note on the page pointing to the departed businesses page— the Historical/Part is mostly for search reasons, and the note will make is 110% clear to someone that the place is no longer. You guys are proposing using the idea of the slash (/) in an entirely ridiculous way. Business' pages should be named after the business, no extra garbage period. The content of their pages should reflect that they're not around anymore, and they should be on the departed businesses page. If you really wanted to go crazy with the slash, these pages should be located in "Departed Businesses/business name here". There's no valid reason for renaming them at all. If a user tries to go rush out to Antonio's Take and Bake because they can't read the first line of the page, it's their problem. There's no reason to rename the pages for searching because they should all be indexed at Departed Businesses and if someone wants a list of all businesses that've departed they can do there. - TravisGrathwell

I tend to agree with Travis. I'm not sure that the renaming is a good idea. I thought "RIP" was good because it's short and easy to type "RIP/xxx" vs. "Historical/xxx". If the purpose is so that they are known to be departed in a search, well Departed Businesses always shows up -so it's very easy to tell. Of course one could even look at the page... And what's the harm anyway? It's not as though they're in the way and have to be moved to another warehouse or such. Furthermore, I think for big structural changes such as this, a concensus should be reached before the 'building' starts -that's what building permits are for. I notice that construction has already started. This is awkward, as nobody likes to have to rip up a foundation because someone jumped the gun. —SteveDavison

Perhaps we should segregate historical businesses to their own section of the wiki. Whatever we decide, it should make it obvious to the user that the place is out of business. And I do think it necessary to reflect this in the name. Its a huge waste of user's time to have them click on links of places that are out of business, only to read the first line saying the place went out of business in 1940. Plus, I disagree that it's a user's fault if they don't carefully read a page, especially when we put the address on the top of the page. —CraigBrozinsky

How about just making something like the Stub include and sticking it on the top of the page? — AndrewChen
* Indyna Bistro is missing ... but I'm too tired to put it in here with any quality. — ChristopherMcKenzie
So is it still a departed business if only the name changed, and everything else stayed the same? The case I'm thinking of is Swirl Frozen Yogurt... —JeremyOgul
