Located in Walker Hall, Design is a popular major at UC Davis, with a
nifty website of its own with descriptions of the various design-specific majors which include: visual communication, fashion and textiles, interior architecture, and comprehensive. In Fall 2005, the design department moved from the College of Ag to the College of Letters and Science. Which means that major plans have changed (For instance they did away with the comprehensive program which means you have to choose between the three specific-emphasis') In addition, they used to require a portfolio for admission, and now they no longer have this requirement (Although there is talk of bringing it back). Some of the classes have been changed and renumbered. A few classes are being changed to upper-division units.
It even has its own Design Museum located on the first floor of Walker Hall. The Design Department has several studios ranging from drafting and computers to sewing labs located either inside Walker or in the Temporary Buildings to the west. The upper floor of Walker Hall is computer labs for Landscape Architecture on one side and offices for Engineering faculty on the other side. Students in the Design department have use of the Tool Room which will lend you anything you need for a project; from lights, matboard cutters, tape, sewing needles and glue, to more advanced items like slide machines and projectors. Just make sure you have your Reg card in order to check out these things. The tool room is next to the advising offices on the first floor of Walker.
