Author Event: Beth E. Levy presents "Frontier Figures"
Time: 12:00 PM (US/Pacific) Location: UC Davis MU Store loungeThe UC Davis Stores presents
Beth E. Levy
(Associate Professor of Music, UC Davis)
In a talk about her new book
Frontier Figures
American Music and the Mythology of the American West
(University of California Press)
May 25, Friday, Noon to 1:00pm
The Bookstore Lounge, Memorial Union, UC Davis campus
Free and open to the general public.
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A period and a book signing.
Frontier Figures is a tour-de-force exploration of how the American West, both as physical space and inspiration, animated American music. Examining the work of such composers as Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, Virgil Thomson, Charles Wakefield Cadman, and Arthur Farwell, Beth E. Levy addresses questions of regionalism, race, and representation as well as changing relationships to the natural world to highlight the intersections between classical music and the diverse worlds of Indians, pioneers, and cowboys. Levy draws from an array of genres to show how different brands of western Americana were absorbed into American culture by way of sheet music, radio, lecture recitals, the concert hall, and film. Frontier Figures is a comprehensive illumination of what the West meant and still means to composers living and writing long after the close of the frontier.
You can read an interview with the author at
http://dhi.ucdavis.edu/?page_id=10356
"Beth Levy has written an elegant work of depth and breadth that gives generous space to the idea of the American West. Her discussions of more than a dozen composers and their works—some usual suspects, others rather unexpected—reveal the 'varied musical ecosystems of the west.' Levy takes us with her on the trail in prose that is by turns pithy and poetic, but always spot on."—Denise Von Glahn, author of The Sounds of Place: Music and the American Cultural Landscape
“Big and bold as the terrain it covers, Beth Levy’s Frontier Figures takes us on a gratifying road trip, traversing American ‘classical’ compositions that conjure up landscapes from the Middle West to the shores of the Pacific. En route, we encounter many now-famous composers, such as Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, and Virgil Thomson, along with others who have faded from view. Throughout, Levy treats the ‘West’ as both geographic location and mythologized ideal, demonstrating its power on the American musical imagination.”—Carol Oja, author of Making Music Modern: New York in the 1920s.

STREET FOOD RODEO
Time: 4:00 PM (US/Pacific) Location: 800 6th St. Davis
Your pals at The Davis Dirt are proud to present the STREET FOOD RODEO!
On Friday, June 1st, 4-10pM, we will be closing off a block of 6th street (between the Davis Food Co-op and Hibbert Lumber) to bring something delicious to the city we love – a roundup of the best street food vendors from our region. Davisites are craving innovative, fresh & affordable street food, and we’re answering their call.
Think paella, made fresh on the spot, gently stirred in giant pans. Or maybe you'll be in the mood for a Vietnamese-inspired Banh Mi Burger with pork, beef, pickled daikon & veggies. Ponder your craving while you watch some ladies making fresh corn tortillas in their taco truck. Mmmm. If Friday's your family's pizza night, we've got you covered with artisan pizza baked in a mobile brick oven. Of course, we've got your sweet cap covered - gourmet funnel cakes, dreamier than you could ever imagine, or handmade on the spot churros (gluten-free options available). Wash it all down with a glass of freshly brewed kombucha on tap, poured from a converted 1978 Mercedes van. Dreamy!
With bumpin’ local music, face painting, hay bale seating, valet bike parking, and FREE ADMISSION, it's going to be hella fun! This event is a fundraiser for the Davis School Garden Program – helping kids stay in touch with where real food comes from.
Be sure to bring cash, as some vendors do not accept credit/debit. Also, please bring re-usable dishware to help keep this a low waste event.
CHECK OUT OUR FACEBOOK EVENTS PAGE FOR A LIST OF OUR MOUTH-WATERING FOOD VENDORS!

Feather Falls Run
Time: 9:00 AM (US/Pacific) Location: Downtown Davis/UC DavisFeather Falls Run is a race committed to promoting Okizu, a non-profit organization that supports northern California's families with childhood cancer. Together, we advocate the life-changing community Okizu provides. We believe in supporting families coping with childhood cancer through teamwork and active living. All proceeds go to Okizu.
There will be three races: a certified 5K starting at 9am, a 1 mile run/walk starting at 10am, and a kids race starting at 10:30am. The 5K and 1 mile are $15 and the kids race is $5.
You can learn more about the race at www.featherfallsrun.org

This is a place to post events. Just enter text as you would into the wiki. Try to use links to the pages associated with venues, etc. You can easily delete the event after posting it (if you make a mistake, etc). To include a picture you must link to the picture externally: use [http://mypicture.com/picture.jpeg]. Please be mindful of posting large images and instead use text wherever possible.
If you're wondering why this page exists in addition to Events Board (and this page is an exact copy) it's because this page is the address where the LiveJournal server pulls the information from, and you're not allowed to update that information on LiveJournal. Sometimes the past (which is nearly the present) catches up with us.
