Blues Harvest
Time: 7:00 PM (US/Pacific)Location: Heidrick Ag Center
The Blues Harvest is an annual fundraising event organized by Friends of Adult Day Health Care to benefit the Yolo Adult Day Health Center. For the past five years, Friends board members and associates, as well as staff from the Center, have worked together to create a fun event that includes musical entertainment, complimentary food and wine, and an auction featuring unique gifts, original works of art, and an opportunity to participate in fun excursions.
The idea to incorporate music into a fundraiser stemmed from the fact that Yolo County is home to talented musicians who are generous with their time and talents. They include 60s SF legend Barry “the Fish” Melton – now our county’s Public Defender, acclaimed Bluesman Bill Scholer, and County Supervisor Mike McGowan, to name just a few. They donate their time and energy to entertain attendees in part because they recognize the valuable service the Adult Day Health Center provides—some from first hand experience because family members have attended the Center.

"Immersion": FREE Short Film Screening about Immigration Issues
Time: 12:30 PM (US/Pacific) Location: Davis Unitarian Church LibraryPlease join us for a screening of "Immersion," a short fictional film about a recent immigrant child struggling in an English-only classroom.
"Immersion" shows a bright boy who, through no fault of his own, is sinking in the classroom at the hands of California's "structured English immersion" policy. The film's intent is to spark a conversation about educating immigrant children. The film also gives people, who may have no experience with the struggles of learning another language, an insight into how daunting this process can be. A panel discussion will immediately follow the film's showing. Included in the panel will be the film's director and other experts on this topic.

Johnsmith Houseconcert
Time: 7:00 PM (US/Pacific)Location: WjWagman
Johnsmith,
http://johnsmithmusic.com/home will be making his second appearance in my living room. John is a wonderful songwriter and performer. At a time when national fame, fortune and reputation are often awarded to performers of pedestrian and limited talents and abilities, it is wholly refreshing to encounter an artist whose work - often grossly under-recognized - possesses a genius that cannot be denied, ignored or overlooked. Johnsmith is one such artist; a gifted singer-songwriter, moving performer and roaming troubadour. Above all else, Johnsmith is a Bard. The role of the Bard in every society is to hold up a mirror to that society, to convey and reveal - through the mysterious alchemy of music and words and performance - the secret inner language of the heart - delivered with that ineffable feeling called 'Soul'. John possesses these gifts in abundance.
His song-lyrics are finely shaped and powerfully moving (this writer was moved to tears on first hearing - and meeting - John in my home some years back, when he sang 'Iris Blue'; an unforgettable moment for me!) and voiced with a spirit and soulfulness that is earned through the embracing of the joys and the pains of a life (both physical and spiritual) lived to the full. Each of John's albums to date (especially his most recent, the truly superb and to my mind, his finest work, Gravity of Grace) seek to explore and develop his unique vision as a wordsmith and his undeniable talent as a musician. As always, John's musical journey takes the listener in to the heart of what matters to him as an artist. As always, his songs deliver an honest and sensitive account of the way-moments of a keenly observed life-journey and his inner impulse to reflect upon and celebrate the mystery of that journey with fierce truth, great sensitivity and tenderness, and, above all, (to quote the title song of his latest album) the 'gravity of grace'.
A $15.00 donation will be requested with all proceeds going to John. For information and reservations call (530) 753-3472 or email me at wjwagman@dcn.org.

House Concert at the Owl House - two great Irish performers
Time: 7:00 PM (US/Pacific) Location: 516 E. 8th Street, DavisCome join us for a cozy night of great tunes, stories and songs from the "ould sod" of Cork, Ireland!
Two of Cork's finest performing artists will be performing on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7:30pm in the intimate setting of The Owl House living room! This is a rare opportunity with limited space.
Máirtín de Cógáin and Jimmy Crowley are widely recognized as two of Cork’s finest musicians and performing artists. Their devotion to the Irish language and traditional style of song and storytelling is matched only by their love for sharing their culture with others. Together they travel as Captain Mackey’s Goatskin Stringband, a reference to a legendary Irish-American Fenian and a legendary Cork folk band from the sixties. www.captainmackey.com
Máirtín de Cógáin (pronounced MAR-teen day KOH-gan) is a founding member of The Fuchsia Band, and is a consummate storyteller, actor, dancer, singer and musician. He is an All-Ireland storyteller and is truly the embodiment of a shanachie and a bard. Máirtín can be seen and heard in the hit movie The Wind That Shakes The Barley, the highest grossing independent Irish-made film of all time and winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. For more info visit www.mairtinmusic.com
Jimmy Crowley is reckoned to be something of a legend in Irish music from his earlier work with Stokers Lodge, described by Micheál Ó Súilleabháin as "an icon in Irish music". He has recorded ten albums of music, is a committed songwriter and a song collector, and is a published playwright. Jimmy is often called “The Voice of Cork,” and has worked with musicians such as Liam Clancy of The Clancy Brothers, Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners, Mary Black, Martin Carthy, Declan Sinnot, Donal Lunny of Planxty and Tríona Ní Dhómhnaill of the Bothy Band, to name just a few. Wild Ocean
Wild Ocean is an explosive, symphonic giant screen film about man and nature that captures one of the world's greatest spectacles. Each year a massive feeding frenzy takes place in the oceans of South Africa as billions of fish migrate up the KwaZulu-Natal Wild Coast. Breaching whales, frenzied sharks, herding dolphins, and diving gannets compete in an epic underwater struggle for survival.
While the migration has provided a food source for both life in the sea and the people living along the African shores, global warming trends and over fishing have threatened the very existence of this great migration. The food chain in the ocean connects the tiniest organisms to the greatest whales. The predators of the ocean thrive upon enormous shoals of pelagic fish. These fish, in turn, depend upon the plankton that rises in the oceanic upwelling's, born of the decaying bodies of the fallen predators. This circle of life has developed and evolved over millions of years.
For the last few hundred years, however, there has been another predator in the ocean: one that takes enormous shoals in one sweep, and does not give back to the sea in any way... this predator has broken the circle... it is a predator that mistakenly considered the ocean an unlimited resource.
Ever since the early 20th century, as fishing has become more efficient and grown in scale, entire fish stocks have collapsed...one by one. Some say the fish have disappeared due to natural cycles, others say climate change is taking its toll, dramatically changing the ocean's ecology. But there is little doubt that over fishing has damaged the ecosystem.
However, there is a place on earth where man attempts to fit into the food chain, pursuing "sustainable" fishing practices in an attempt to preserve one of the most incredible migrations and feeding frenzies on the planet. In South Africa, business, government and the local people have joined forces in an attempt to protect this great and invaluable migration. This is where Africa meets the Sea.

"AWS" are a collection of remote computing services offered over the Internet by Amazon.com. They provide online services for other web sites or client-side applications. Most of these services are not exposed directly to end users, but instead offer functionality that other developers can use. Amazon Web Services' offerings are accessed over HTTP, using REST and SOAP protocols, and are billed on usage.

Post a new event:
This is the place to post community events! Just enter text as you would into the wiki. Try to use links to the pages associated with venues, etc (so if you say "Davis Music Scene" you should make that into a link, ["Davis Music Scene"]). This makes it easier for people to find out more information on the organization, etc. You can easily delete the event after posting it (if you make a mistake, etc). Note that this page is not intended for businesses to notify people about sales events.
Tips: Include the event description, the location, start and end dates, start and end times, the cost (or note if free), and a link to further information/contact. Post a week (or more) in advance, if possible (but less than 3 months in advance). Events are assumed to be open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Images: To include a picture you must link to the picture externally (meaning it has to be hosted on some other website). Then just paste in the url of the image in brackets. So if the image is at http://site.com/pict.jpg you would put [http://site.com/pict.jpg]. Feel free to include a flyer/other photo. (Just be sure to type the information too!) Note: Although your images can be of any size, Please be courteous and respectful and do not post unnecessarily large images. Keep in mind that some people view the board on laptops with small screens and images larger than will fit on a screen defeat their purpose. If your images are larger than approx. 800x600, use one of the free resizing services (
http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ or
http://www.resize2mail.com/) and/or use a link to the image instead of embedding the image.
You can quickly get to this page by going to
