Alan Williamson Gives a Poetry Reading at the John Natsoulas Gallery
Time: 8:00 PM (US/Pacific) Location: The John Natsoulas GalleryBeginning its fifth year in the city of Davis, the Poetry Night Reading Series is proud to welcome a UC Davis poetry favorite, Alan Williamson, on Thursday, February 2nd at 8 P.M. He will be performing at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis.
One of the most important poet-critics of his generation, Alan Williamson has received a National Endowment of the Arts fellowship and a Guggenheim fellowship. Williamson has taught for the UC Davis English Department since 1983, having previously taught at the University of Virginia, Harvard University, and Brandeis University.
Alan Williamson studied poetry with Robert Lowell at Harvard University, earning a Ph.D. in 1969. While Williamson published numerous works, including both literary criticism and his own poetry, Williamson’s Pity the Monsters: The Political Vision of Robert Lowell (1974) helped distinguish him as an esteemed poet-critic. Some of his other poetry collections include, “Love and the Soul” (The University of Chicago Press, 1995) and “The Muse of Distance” (Knopf, 1988). The University of Chicago Press stated that Williamson was “the unequalled detective of the mythic reverberations behind the psyche’s complex inner weather.”
The new millennium brought new works by Williamson. The Pattern More Complicated: New and Selected Poems (2004) inspired this praise from the University of Chicago Press: “Williamson’s verse is a refreshing example of how delicately the personal can intersect with the public in a love for the considered life . . . and the recurrence of themes across the span of four previous collections [presents] a survey of a major American poet in a single volume.” Professor Williamson directed Dr. Andy’s dissertation, and continues to be a favorite poet and professor of many students and faculty at UC Davis and beyond.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at the John Natsoulas Gallery to secure a seat, and to sign up for a spot on the Open Mic list. The open mic list is usually full by the time the featured poet is introduced at 8pm. The Poetry Night Reading Series, organized and hosted by Andy Jones, occurs on the first and third Thursday of every month at the John Natsoulas Gallery.

Athleticism & Dance Davis Dance Project 2012
Time: 7:00 PM (US/Pacific) Location: Pamela Trokanski Dance Workshop
In 1998, the Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre first presented
Athleticism & Dance... A combination lecture, demonstration, and
performance that explored eight aspects of what it means to be an athlete in dance and how dancers share a lot in common with football, basketball, and baseball players, as well as wrestlers, gymnasts, and long distance runners. This year, we decided that it's time to bring it back!
For those of you new to the company, the PTDT entered their 27th season this year, and are known for dance works that straddle the worlds of personal idiosyncrasy and contemporary culture, while, at the same time, delivering the message in a vocabulary that is totally accessible to their audiences; athletic, exuberant, humorous, and lyrical. This part of the company's work is also defined by their mission statement: building artistic literacy in the art form and making it accessible to the community at large.
This 90 minute presentation also includes opportunities for audience participation for those who would like to explore some of the athletic components onstage! Great entertainment for children and adults alike, the performance allows the audience a peek into the physical nature of the art form. Joined by members of The Third Stage, company dancers range in age from 11 to 82, making it an excellent opportunity to see not only the artistic advantages of including dance in one's life, but the health advantages as well!
Funded, in part, by Lisa DeAmicis & Thomas S. Nesbitt, MD, Louise Kellogg & Douglas Neuhouser, and Marc & Susan Mangel, children 12 and younger come for FREE, although they must be supervised (individually or in a group)by an adult. General Admission is $12. Tickets become available Monday, January 16, at the Pamela Trokanski Dance Workshop, [2720 Del Rio Place, Davis] and will be available, at the door, 30 minutes before each show, until "sold out." For more information visit the web site at www.trokanski.com or call 530-756-3949.

Bark! and Roy De Forest Exhibition
John Natsoulas Gallery

www.natsoulas.com ~ (530) 756-3938
Exhibition Dates: February 1st- February 25th
Opening Reception: February 10th, 7pm-9pm
The John Natsoulas Gallery has had a long history of working with dog imagery. For the month of February, “Bark!: An Artistic View of Man’s Best Friend”. This exhibition will be showing dog pieces from many local artists including: Robert Arneson, Wayne Thiebaud, David Gilhooly, Robert Ransom, Arthur Gonzales, Esther Shimazu, Jeffrey Downing, Stephen Braun, Avery Palmer, Amber Aguirre, Rene Martucci, and many, many more. In conjunction with “Bark!”, we have a solo exhibition by the world-renowned dog artist, Roy De Forest.
Dogs have a long history of being involved in art. Many artists have included dogs into their works including Picasso, Gaugin, and Lautrec. Dogs are beloved to many artists and their patrons. Going back to the 18th and 19th century, nobleman and royals would have their dog companions immortalized by artists. Even going back to 2008 b.c., there have been paintings on the walls of caves featuring dogs with their owners. Dog paintings have helped authors view and trace dog lineage and breed genealogy through the years.

Village Harvest - Huge Harvest in Winters
Time: 9:30 AM (US/Pacific) Location: University Mall parking lot, in front of The Graduate on Russell near Sycamore
We need volunteers to help harvest fruit!
Village Harvest is an organization that picks fruit from backyard trees in Davis and donates it to local food agencies to feed the hungry in Yolo County. Harvests are a fun and easy way to volunteer your time and see a tangible result of your effort. A typical harvest lasts 3 hours and yields 500-1000 pounds of nutritious fruit that goes
to families in need.
But this is not a typical harvest. We have been invited back to harvest a beautiful hilltop orchard of 100 tangelo trees in Winters, just west of Davis. Last year, 49 volunteers harvested more than 3,400 pounds of tangelos, more than we'd ever harvested in a single day. We need as many volunteers as we can get to beat that record!
Join us! 9:30am-1pm. Meet at 9:30am sharp in the University Mall parking lot, in front of The Graduate on Russell near Anderson. From there we will carpool to the orchard.
For more details, see:
http://www.villageharvest.org/davis/
To plan effectively, we must know how many people are coming. To join this harvest, please email linda.schwartz@villageharvest.org
To confirm the harvest, call our toll free number after 8 AM on the morning of the harvest: 1-888-378-4841, EXT. 730

The Pirates of Penzance
Time: 8:00 PM (US/Pacific) Location: Veterans Memorial Center Theatre==THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE==
Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento celebrates its 31st season with Gilbert & Sullivan’s swashbuckling musical comedy "The Pirates of Penzance." Goofy, irreverent, and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" follows the story of an orphan boy who was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate instead of a (ship's) pilot. One of the most popular operettas ever written, "Pirates" is a hilarious farce featuring soft-hearted pirates, bumbling policemen, impressionable young ladies, an eccentric Major-General, and is pouring over with unforgettable melodies such as "Poor Wandering One," and tongue-twisting songs such as "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General." The company performs with a live orchestra and supertitles.

Davis Live Music Collective Presents Jolie Holland and Sea of Bees
Time: 9:00 PM (US/Pacific)Location: Odd Fellows Hall
The Davis Live Music Collective is proud to present one of the nation's most important young songwriters Jolie Holland along with supporting artist Sea of Bees. This is the music collective’s inaugural event and will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in Davis, Tuesday, February 21st.
Jolie Holland is an esteemed Shortlist Prize nominated musician who counts Tom Waits and ANTI- label mate Sage Francis among her most outspoken fans. She has shared some of the nation’s biggest stages with artists like The Jayhawks, Mavis Staples, She & Him, Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), David Gray and Chris Isaak. Holland is a unique and important voice in music who blends blues, folk, gospel, jazz and seventies-era rock into truly beautiful and unique songs unmistakably her own.
Recently gaining national praise on NPR’s All Songs Considered as a Top 10 pick, Sea of Bees has been releasing albums on Davis, California’s locally owned Crossbill Records since 2009. The musical project of accomplished multi-instrumentalist and self-described freak-folk singer/songwriter Julie Baenziger, Sea of Bees mixes woozy vocals with guitar rooted in folk and rock, delivering songs as mysterious and eclectic as they are wonderful.
The Davis Live Music Collective is a local volunteer group committed to curate, organize, and promote high quality live music for audiences in Davis, CA. The collective formed last September from the town’s vibrant house concert scene, drawn together by a host looking for anyone desiring “really good live music” in Davis. Since then members, a loosely woven group of inspired local music fans, have met at coffee shops, pubs and around kitchen tables to organize this remarkable event.
The concert is open to all ages and will take place Tuesday, February 21st at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall at 415 Second Street, with doors opening at 8pm, music beginning at 9pm. Tickets are available for $12 at Armadillo Music, 205 F Street in Davis, or online at

The Art of Painting in the 21st Century is an annual conference geared towards nurturing dialog on contemporary painting and the shared ideas that define current trends in the field. Many painters work alone, an isolated process that deprives the artist of thriving debate until the work is shown. The conference provides a unique venue for artists to participate in panel discussions, breakout groups and attend lectures by some of the most exciting visionaries in the field, including Glenn Brill, Enrique Chagoya, Guy Diehl, Bruce Everett, Gay Powers, Sharon Wolpoff, Dr. Jeffrey Ruda, Kara Maria, and Richard Whitten. Five downtown Davis student exhibitions, curated by the instructors of Northern California universities and colleges, are meant to encourage youth participation and community involvement.
“If you are an instructor at a college or university in California, and would like an exhibition space to promote your school, please contact us at : art[at]natsoulas[dot]com. Limited space available. There will be free exhibition space provided within walking distance from the conference headquarters.
The exhibitions begin the afternoon of Friday, March 9, 2012, with one opening reception at the John Natsoulas Gallery and the student reception at the Hallmark Inn in the evening. The majority of the educational events will take place Saturday, March 10, from 10 to 5pm, and both days are filled with panel discussions, lectures and breakout groups intended for all conferees.
The conference’s goal is to gather artists from varying communities, allowing for open interaction between young students and professionals in the field, fostering the strong tradition of painting and culture in the Northern California region.

Post a new event:
Note: You must be logged in to post an event.
This is the place to post community events! Just enter text as you would into the wiki. Try to use links to the pages associated with venues, etc (so if you say "Davis Music Scene" you should make that into a link, ["Davis Music Scene"]). This makes it easier for people to find out more information on the organization, etc. You can easily delete the event after posting it (if you make a mistake, etc). Note that this page is not intended for businesses to notify people about sales events.
Tips: You must be logged in to post an event. Include the event description, the location, start and end dates, start and end times, the cost (or note if free), and a link to further information/contact. Post a week (or more) in advance, if possible (but less than 3 months in advance). Events are assumed to be open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Images: To include a picture you must link to the picture externally (meaning it has to be hosted on some other website). Then just paste in the url of the image in brackets. So if the image is at http://site.com/pict.jpg you would put [http://site.com/pict.jpg]. Feel free to include a flyer/other photo. (Just be sure to type the information too!) Note: Although your images can be of any size, Please be courteous and respectful and do not post unnecessarily large images. Keep in mind that some people view the board on laptops with small screens and images larger than will fit on a screen defeat their purpose. If your images are larger than approx. 800x600, use one of the free resizing services (
http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ or
http://www.resize2mail.com/) and/or use a link to the image instead of embedding the image.
You can quickly get to this page by going to
http://daviswiki.org/events (that way it's easier to remember).
