Larry’s answer was that he felt that it was the city’s problem to deal with, as Davis is responsible for neighborhood problems such as the one that’s sprouting between greeks and long-term city residents. Ruth’s immediate reply was to throw it right back at Larry, claiming that fraternities and other groups are campus-based, and therefore a university problem. To avoid coming to punches live on air, Larry’s wonderfully political response was, well, maybe we could possibly look into it if there’s a demonstrated interest. Here’s the opportunity to show that interest does exist, and that the west village serves a unique opportunity to remedy the problem. -["ThomasLloyd" TL]<br> <span>-</span> * my two cents is that it's the city's problem. Ideally it would be close to campus and I doubt they'd endorse steam rolling the rather expensive housing that exists near campus. I mean, practically, aren't fraternities just like any other group of people living together? Why should either the university OR the city have to do anything about it? I mean... if I want to get together with a group of 20 of my closest science fiction watching buddies and form the 'Society for Students Who Want to Invade Other Planets', why should anybody be obliged to see that I have some place to live? What's so different between that and a fraternity (besides the obvious bit about planetary invasion)? BTW: If somebody DOES have an obligation to help house a sci-fi student group... anyone out there interested in forming the (government subsidized) sci-fi house? --["EricKlein"]<br> <span>-</span> * I agree that such a club, if demonstrating a genuine interest and committment to benefit the community, should be open to apply for the described group housing. In fact, there already exist group housing across from the ARC that serve groups other than greeks, including the African Diaspora House and the Jewish Student Union. The point is that there is a demand for group housing, fraternity or otherwise, and there is a lack of a supply. On-campus housing is available to groups only after an application process that includes a presentation to a board selected by the university and the housing owners. So I encourage you to get your group together, demonstrate a committment to benefit the community (ie through philanthropy), and apply for housing once we get this project off the ground. It's not government subsidized (I wouldnt call the dorms "subsidized"), it's just a service that the university should be allowing for to meet the demonstrated need of a significant portion of its students. -["thomaslloyd" TL]<br> <span>-</span> * I don't mean to be obtuse, but I still don't really understand why there should be any special consideration. I was actually being facetious about the sci-fi house thing. I really wouldn't want any sort of special public support for a group like that. I have no problem with the fraternaties and sororities, and I wish them the best of luck with things, but I also don't see where they should get a helping hand either. They are a voluntary organization that, although made of students, and therefore somewhat school related, are not really an integral part of campus (or town) functioning. If the fraternaties and sororities disappeared tomorrow, things would be a little different, but the campus would go on pretty much as it has. I still don't understand why anyone should help out any private group with their housing needs. The dorms are a different matter. They make the transition from high school to college much easier for many students, and they seem to actually provide a real benefit to the school, the students and the town. Not that fraternaties and sororities don't provide benefits (charity work and such), but it doesn't seem beneficial nearly on the same scale as having the dorms for freshmen. Personally, I don't want my taxes or my UC fees spent to help house any group that could just as well arrange for their own housing needs. (I would be just as opposed to housing any private group, not just greeks). --["EricKlein"] </td> <td> <span>+</span> * Didn't ["Ruth Asmundson"] and ["Larry Vanderhoef"] mention something about this on ["Jon Li"]'s ["DCTV"] show? -["<span>Users/</span>RobRoy"]<br> <span>+</span> * Funny story actually- in Jon Li’s interview with Ruth and Larry on DCTV, Jon actually threw the question regarding greek zoning out there (that I actually planted in an earlier meeting that week with Jon). --["<span>Users/</span>EricKlein"] </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2008-09-23 13:13:17Josh-HTau Kappa Epsilon location change <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 4: </td> <td> Line 4: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- </span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 13: </td> <td> Line 12: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 29: </td> <td> Line 29: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ * ["Tau Kappa Epsilon"] ("TKE"): Corner of ["1st St." 1st] and A<br> + </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 40: </td> <td> Line 42: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- * ["Tau Kappa Epsilon"] ("TKE"): ["Russell"] Blvd.<br> - </span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2008-07-08 14:45:09MaryLieth(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 16: </td> <td> Line 16: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> * ["Chi Omega"] ("Chi O"): ["<span>5th</span> <span>Street</span>"<span>&nbsp;5th</span>] and A </td> <td> <span>+</span> * ["Chi Omega"] ("Chi O"): ["<span>Russell</span> <span>Blvd.</span>"] and A </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2007-09-17 14:06:18Keven <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 9: </td> <td> Line 9: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> * ["Sigma Alpha Epsilon"] ("SAE") </td> <td> <span>+</span> * ["Sigma Alpha Epsilon"] ("SAE")<span>&nbsp;521 ["Russell"] Blvd.</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 55: </td> <td> Line 55: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> * Wait, I don't get the problem. Sammies is moving because their membership level is too low to sustain the high cost of their current lease price (upwards of 10k/mo.). No violations that I know of. Note that it will likely be filled by ["Pi Kappa Alpha"] (Pikes), the largest and wealthiest fraternity on campus. Also note that PKA is hardcore fundraising, as even they will have a hard time coming up with the funds to pay for it. (We need more on-campus alternatives!) -["thomaslloyd" TL]<br> - * Can you elaborate on your desire for the university to build a new frat row? Perhaps on a different page? My gut reaction is that you are asking for subsidized housing for the greek system. I'd like a clear picture of your vision only since you are a senator and have more power to get things done. -["jh"]<br> - * Similar to the model adopted by SDSU, I feel the university could build a frat row/group housing in the west village. The units would be essentially like mini-apartments gathered around a communal living area and a large chapter room/rec room (see drawings in the SDSU links above). The fraternity would not own the house itself, but would instead be charged for the common areas, leaving students to be charged similar to as if they were living in the dorms (quite possibly run by student housing). This is not too far off of the normal practice at other campuses of universities allocating entire floors of their dorms to fraternities as their housing area. As dorm housing is already short, rather than ask for, let's say South Castillian to be for fraternity housing, I would ask that a new development be built specifically suited for group housing. Hope this clears up questions... -["thomaslloyd" TL]<br> - * Isn't SDSU also known to be one of the greater party schools in the system? I hear about it all the time. People from UCSD go to SDSU parties a bunch I'm told. I wonder if the citizens against more frat housing, or maybe against having all the housing localized together, have that as a primary concern. Trying to keep the small town feel, not be overun by students and businesses, and fear about out-of-control parties like the 'riot' last year. Not being in a frat, it's a lil' hard for me to empathesize (personally) with their housing plights. Not saying I don't understand it, merely that I'd venture to say most people not involved in the system don't really care. Or if they see it like Jack's initially thought above (subsidized housing) would be against it. -["EdwinSaada" ed]<br> - <br> - * [http://www.californiaaggie.com/media/storage/paper981/news/2005/09/30/FrontPage/Safe-Party.Initiative.To.Temporarily.Increase.Police.Patrols-1321173.shtml Parties in Davis neighborhoods can only be fixed with real long-term solutions]</span> </td> <td> <span>+ * [http://www.californiaaggie.com/media/storage/paper981/news/2005/09/30/FrontPage/Safe-Party.Initiative.To.Temporarily.Increase.Police.Patrols-1321173.shtml Parties in Davis neighborhoods can only be fixed with real long-term solutions]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2006-10-24 21:25:45EvanChait <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 29: </td> <td> Line 29: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- * ["Alpha Epsilon Pi"] ("AE Pi"): C st, across from ["Farmers Market"]</span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2006-10-24 21:25:21EvanChait <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 25: </td> <td> Line 25: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> * ["Alpha Epsilon Pi"] ("AE Pi"): <span>we</span>st of ["<span>Highw</span>a<span>y</span> <span>113</span>"<span>&nbsp;The 113</span>]<span>&nbsp;on Adams</span> </td> <td> <span>+</span> * ["Alpha Epsilon Pi"] ("AE Pi"): <span>C </span>st<span>,</span> <span>acr</span>o<span>ss </span>f<span>rom</span> ["<span>F</span>a<span>rmers</span> <span>Market</span>"] </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 29: </td> <td> Line 29: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> * ["<span>P</span>h<span>i Delt</span>a <span>Theta</span>"] ("P<span>h</span>i<span>&nbsp;Delts</span>"): C st, across from ["Farmers Market"] </td> <td> <span>+</span> * ["<span>Alp</span>ha <span>Epsilon Pi</span>"] ("<span>AE </span>Pi"): C st, across from ["Farmers Market"] </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 51: </td> <td> Line 51: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> '''A New Fraternity Row?''' I was actually being facetious about the sci</span>-<span>fi house thing. -["ThomasLloyd" TL]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2005-06-13 01:20:27RobRoycomment to thomas <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 51: </td> <td> Line 51: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + * Didn't ["Ruth Asmundson"] and ["Larry Vanderhoef"] mention something about this on ["John Li"]'s ["DCTV"] show? -["RobRoy"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Frat Rowhttp://daviswiki.org/Frat_Row2005-06-12 00:22:52ThomasLloydUCD should put a fraternity row in West Village <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Frat Row<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 47: </td> <td> Line 47: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ '''A New Fraternity Row?'''<br> + Faced with an inadequate supply of affordable and appropriate (by size) housing, many Greek chapters now exist among the City of Davis’ neighborhoods. Not surprisingly, the shift towards “informal houses” has only exasperated the tensions between students and the city’s permanent residents.<br> + <br> + As the university is developing its “Long Range Development Plan” (LRDP), a growing population of both students and City of Davis officials believe that the prudent choice for the university would be to take into account zoning for a fraternity row/ communal housing. In this manner, groups ranging from fraternities to club teams could benefit from group housing alternatives that serve as an excellent example of high-density living. This approach has recently been taken by [http://www.foundation.sdsu.edu/ccrp_current_develop.html#parttwo San Diego State University] and has received overwhelming [http://www.thedailyaztec.com/media/paper741/news/2004/02/09/City/Sorority.Row.Project.Breaks.Ground.In.04-756858.shtml praise].
