Still, we're left with a system that ensures that ASUCD has an in-group and an out-group, which makes the sociologist in me cry. We have choice voting, and we had a chance to make a true multiparty democracy, and we let it slip through our fingers. I've even heard James Schwab lament the fact that he won so many seats. So here I am, the last member of the Friends still involved in ASUCD on a regular basis. I authored/coauthored 12% of the bills last year, but I can't do everything. So I do what I can to politically survive; I mainly threw in with LEAD for the last election because Student Focus is still mad about what I said two years ago and LEAD represents my values slightly better than the greek-based Focus and the right-wing independents. Do I still think slates are still stupid? Yes. Candidates should be judged on their platform not their party, but slates represent the most efficient way to get people elected. I remain willing to help anyone who lacks the expertise in ASUCD and campaigning find a way to get elected. And I'm currently working with Eric Friedman, Andrew Peake, George Ajlouny, and Ravi Deepak on their issues. If you're really opposed to slates, just ignore them and work on issues you want done -- that seems a lot better than opposing a slate because of its name. --["BrentLaabs"] - * Listen, I hate political parties. The Democrats, Republicans, LEAD, Student Focus, FUCK, whatever. I don't like the idea of them. I like a group of people working together for a common goal but a political party is just a way to label someone as having a set of beliefs that may not be correct so I think the party system fails. I wish everyone ran as an independent but I know that is not how the game is played right now. Basically, I would just appreciate it, since my name will possibly be on the ballot in the winter, that there not be a political party on the ballot that includes the letter from my former acronym. Besides, I think the joke is played out. You seem to state that you believe there is little value to names (political parties/slates) and yet insist on the value of this slate's name and request it changed, it seems quite contradictory. Honestly I may not get the chance to run, so I would not worry about confusing people, I also plan to make it clear the situation given the names in the case that I do run, mainly I plan to draw attention to the issues, and namely try to get a few minutes to say what I feel about being a transfer student at Davis, swamped with higher level, upper division classes, a new environment, a black box of a student government, and little help in integrating to the campus community, meeting people and all that jazz. Honestly I may not get the chance to run, so I would not worry about confusing people, I also plan to make it clear the situation given the names in the case that I do run, mainly I plan to draw attention to the issues, and namely try to get a few minutes to say what I feel about being a transfer student at Davis, swamped with higher level, upper division classes, a new environment, a black box of a student government, and little help in integrating to the campus community, meeting people and all that jazz. If the group remained true to its values of anti-cronyism, anti-partisan politics, anti-government waste, and pro-student services, it could be a valuable force in ASUCD today. But Rob and Kristen didn't want to continue the group, and ASUCD has returned to partisan politics. Thankfully, Darnell isn't like Kalen -- he doesn't excercise much control over his party. Still, we're left with a system that ensures that ASUCD has an in-group and an out-group, which makes the sociologist in me cry. We have choice voting, and we had a chance to make a true multiparty democracy, and we let it slip through our fingers. I've even heard James Schwab lament the fact that he won so many seats. So here I am, the last member of the Friends still involved in ASUCD on a regular basis. I authored/coauthored 12% of the bills last year, but I can't do everything. So I do what I can to politically survive; I mainly threw in with LEAD for the last election because Student Focus is still mad about what I said two years ago and LEAD represents my values slightly better than the greek-based Focus and the right-wing independents. Do I still think slates are still stupid? Yes. Candidates should be judged on their platform not their party, but slates represent the most efficient way to get people elected. I remain willing to help anyone who lacks the expertise in ASUCD and campaigning find a way to get elected. And I'm currently working with Eric Friedman, Andrew Peake, George Ajlouny, and Ravi Deepak on their issues. If you're really opposed to slates, just ignore them and work on issues you want done -- that seems a lot better than opposing a slate because of its name. --["BrentLaabs"]
