Children playing at Montessori Country Day Care Center

Noise violations are a hazard for house party hosts in Davis, but more recently, complaints have been filed against the Montessori Country Day Care Center over the physical layout of the day care center, which, critics contend, amplifies the sound of the playing children tremendously. Update! According to the city council, the meeting at which this issue was to be discussed was scheduled for Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. but it has now been postponed to a future (unspecified) date.

The facility was zoned in 1983 on a 3/4 acre parcel designated for a childcare facility for up to 144 children. There is a history of some 15 years of complaints about the noise levels. After an investigation by sound experts, a set of recommendations were issued, and Montessori and the affected neighbors apparently agreed to share the costs of making the recommended changes. (More information about this would be good. It appears that the center bore the majority of costs for the construction of a sound barrier.) The noise is allegedly amplified in the direction of the neighbors. The center made some improvements to dampen sound, but the critics contend they have not gone far enough.

2009-11-06 The Davis Wiki is declared "the world's best local wiki" in a blog post from Harvard's Nieman Journalism Lab. The Davis Enterprise followed up on this with a front-page article on 2009-11-10, headlined "Davis Wiki is 'world's best.'"

2009-10-13 An upstream provider suffered a power issue that caused Davis Wiki to be offline early this morning. For system outage information, you can also follow the Wiki Spot twitter feed.

2009-04-09 Wikispot (including daviswiki) was inaccessible for nearly 10 hours due to multiple fiber cuts in the SF bay area, at least one of which affected our upstream provider. While we seem to be back up now, you may experience intermittent outages as repair crews work to fix the damaged line(s).
