Pulls the link for two year old update into the text itself, and adds a link to ["Welcome to the wiki"], which is a reasonable help entry. This is likely a bit more questionable than the above (at least in my mind), as we now have a link to the Introduction and to a self described primer. Of course, having both an introduction '''about''' what the wiki is, and also a primer explaining '''how''' to get involved makes sense enough to me to include both. These are primarily infrastructure improvements - things that a governing body such as the Davis City Council needs to address, but may not be aware of. The idea is to make these issues easy for the Davis City Council to monitor and respond to, and to make it easy for residents of Davis to post new issues. Issue visibility will also help in ensuring that issues get addressed quickly. This seems like something that would be good to have a link to off of the front page.<br> - <br> - The wishlist is already linked. See ["DavisNeededImprovements/Talk"] --["Users/ArlenAbraham"]<br> - <br> - The wishlist seems more like a list of things that we wish could be found in Davis. Restaurants of a certain type, for example. Those are things that would be nice to have, but that aren't really realistic. The idea behind the needed improvements page is that rather than listing things that we wish for, this is a list of things that are things that the City Council can (and should) address now, and that can be realistically achieved or fixed. --["Users/IDoNotExist"]<br> - <br> - It seems like you're arguing just because you want your own page - there are many suggestions on the ["Davis Wish List"] page that look quite similiar to what you've posted on the ["DavisNeededImprovements"] page. How is a suggestion in the Bike section of the ["Davis Wish List"] to widen the sidewalk between Segundo and the ARC "unrealistic" ... while your suggestion to add a bike path between Lake and Anderson is something that can be addressed now? It's a noble gesture to say that the Davis City Council would use a Daviswiki page as a road map for Davis improvements, but I don't think that's very realistic. --["Users/VladLoscutoff"]<br> - <br> - <br> - * I'll see your "unrealistic" (a point which I agree with) and raise you an "it can't hurt to try". I'll also up the ante by tossing in the point that the wiki is a resource for the community, and this is a novel use that, while likely to fail, is also something that somebody ''could'' (if they really made a real world, non-wiki-only effort) make work. As for a link on the front page, the general rule of thumb has been to link only near complete or at least very fleshed out entries, which would not apply here. I think somebody will trip across this little thread in a year or so, notice that the Needed Improvements project has been dead for a year, merge it into the Wish List and delete this thread. But then, something like that fate hung over the head of many other entries that have wound up flourishing. --jw<br> - <br> - * I'm not. I really don't care who maintains the page. I did not suggest adding a bike path to lake and arlington - there is already one there. It's just in terrible shape and needs maintenance in one location. That's a patch that can be applied in a few hours. The wish list is asking for things that would take months or years. They are items of major scale, that require significant work with zoning issues, major construction, licensing, etc. For example, they are requesting a "good" italian restaurant, the return of "Froggy" burgers, an asian supermarket, a skate park, a Best Buy, a new rail system, etc. That's quite different from retiming stoplights, fixing potholes, etc. --["Users/IDoNotExist"]<br> - <br> - * But what stops Davis Needed Improvements from turning into the Wish List (and vice-versa)? Who decides whether an item belongs on the Improvement page or the Wish List? I do like the heart of the idea (highlight the best suggestions), but perhaps a section could just be added to the top of the Wish List that highlights the (top 5? top 10?) most realistic and needed suggestions. I just don't see what makes a suggestion Needed Improvements worthy vs. Wish List worthy ... and if a suggestion should be on both pages (which appears to be the case atm), why not consolidate down to a single wiki page? --["Users/VladLoscutoff"]<br> - <br> - * It's about presentation to people who can do something about it. By placing something in Davis Needed Improvements, you are trying to make a case to the city council (or to whoever has some power over the item) that this is something important that needs to be fixed. If you mix this in with the wish list, someone will look at it and say "They want something that is going to take lots of time and money. I'm going to ignore this." It's easier to get buy-in on something if you keep your request focused and realistic. A lot of the items on the wish list are things that would be really great to have, but if you say "Please fix this bike path. It's dangerous to ride on at night. Oh, and by the way, can we have a new Best Buy while we're at it?", you aren't going to be taken very seriously. If you go to your apartment manager and say "My faucet leaks. Please fix it.", they will probably fix it. If you say "My faucet leaks. Please fix it and I wish that my apartment had plush carpeting, larger windows, and marble counters", will you get anywhere? Probably not. A "best suggestions" list on the wish list is a great idea. But keeping the lists separate provides a good way to provide feedback and requests to the Council for things that they can reasonably accomplish in a short time, and within their power and budget. That's a criteria that very few items on the wish list meet.<br> - <br> - In general, it might be useful to establish criteria lists or suggested improvements for businesses in Davis in general. This would be different from the comments on wiki pages that say "This restaurant had terrible service!" The idea is that there is feedback that might apply to most or all businesses (some random examples: Please allow us to place orders online. Or, please offer WiFi. Or whatever.) This would provide faster feedback than waiting for lots of businesses to make the same mistakes.</span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Front Page/Talkhttp://daviswiki.org/Front_Page/Talk2008-10-01 19:46:37JabberWokkyrm done (commented out now, but there) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Front Page/Talk<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 123: </td> <td> Line 123: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- <br> - =Proposal: Davis Social Meeting=<br> - <br> - Uh, I don't know if I'm doing this right, but I was wondering if it would be possible to get the BBQ in a more front page location on a semi-permanent basis. This initiative is similar to one that was voted for by the majority of California Voters (I was not one at the time) in 2000 but was recently undone by the California Supreme Court in an action that I feel violated the will of the people and made me feel as if our leaders in the Supreme Court of California feel they are above democracy. I do not mean this note to offend or attack anyone. I do not even care if I change a single vote among my friends. Instead, I hope to help people understand why I feel the way I do and hopefully respect it. I am currently living in the college town of Davis and I am actually very afraid of retaliation for my personal and religious views. My husband and I decided not to post a sign showing our support of this proposition because we were afraid of physical harm to our apartment. While working as an RA for UC Davis I felt like I would be reprimanded by my superiors if I EVER shared views contrary to those of the very liberal UC Davis to coworkers, or residents. I would like you as readers to understand that I already have experienced religious intolerance not only by peers but by superiors while on campus in UC Davis and I ask you to please not comment on this note in a way that is a personal attack or hateful of those of us that truely believe in a God.<br> - <br> - To understand my posistion you first need to understand two things:<br> - #1 I completely lack the ability to factor God out of any situation. I do not desire this ability. I know many that think that religion should be completely excluded from public affairs of all kind but I believe in a power higher than our government.<br> - #2 I view this issue (and a few others too) in a very different way than most of my peers here at UC Davis. I know many of you (my friends) are in a stage in life where it is easy to feel that your actions do not affect others, or that others affect you. Many of you only have yourself to look out for. As for me, I am married and plan to have children within the next few years. I look at this issue and ask myself, how will this affect my family. I worry a lot about the impact on the school systems because I know my parents were upset with a few of the things my teachers taught me at school (namely a teacher or two who very much support welfare... not that this is right or wrong but I have Republican parents).<br> - <br> - My position:<br> - #1 No action we ever do, no matter how secret or private is an isolated event. For example, what a parent does at home affects their kids who in turn share things with their classmates who then pass it on to their siblings. If one parent tells a child that smoking isn't really as bad for you as the schools say it is, easily twenty children might get this view.<br> - #2 The laws of this state affect what is taught in schools. I believe that this is rightfully done so that the views of individual teachers don't affect the morals taught in each grade level. I do worry however that if the current Gay movement spreads to schools (which I see fully happening if proposition 8 isn't passed showing to the government that voters feel this way) that kids will be taught they need to not only discover who they like but what gender orientation they are. Life was confusing enough for me as a 12 year-old not to have to question if my "proper gender" was male because I got along with boys better and like most things associated with that gender role. I wouldn't want a late bloomer child who might not like girls or boys yet to have that question on their mind.<br> - I also fear that my children will be taught that it is ok to marry (or simply just have sex with) anyone whom you love and loves you. Many women love abusive husbands and boyfriends. Some boys fall for girls significantly younger and viceversa. Some people may be completely incompatible. I want my children to consider who they marry for more than just love, and I want them to value my opinion.<br> - #3 I believe a child has a right wherever possible to be raised by a mother and father. It seems to me that God, and nature (which ever you believe in), dictates this. Now I know that this is not often happening and it saddens me. I actually believe it is selfish when parents decide to split-up because they "just don't love each other anymore". There are times when divorce is necessary but I think too many parents give up on their marriage prematurely. My Dad comes form a large family, which has allowed me to see not only my parents struggle in marriage but aunts and uncles, but they live with it until they can work through it for their kids and they end up having many happy loving times.<br> - I hear many argue that having gay parents is better than having no parents or abusive parents. I agree. However, I think the role of adoption agencies is to find the best possible home for each child, and in my mind that involves a father and a mother. If gay marriage is allowed gay adoptions will not only be allowed, but they may be forced as in Massachusetts. In that state gay marriage is already allowed and the courts have declared that adoption must be equal opportunity; already one of the largest adoption agencies, a Catholic agency, has closed its doors in that state because they are no longer to act within their religious beliefs. I fear the same will happen here in California. When i read the statement from the California Supreme Court allowing gay marriage it stood out to me that they said that gays have a "right to raise children". I believe a child has a right to be raised, no parent ever has a right above that of a child, that is why we have CPS.<br> - We are not flooded with healthy children to adopt, I know people that haven't been able to afford to or have been neglected the opportunity because they were a little too old. Most of the children in our foster care system have been taken from negligent parents (and there is a period of time the parents have to earn them back) or have disabilities (and sadly most parents don't feel they can make that commitment). We have a shortage of healthy cute infants for people to adopt... they should be put in the best homes for them, not what might be "fair" or "equal" for those attempting to adopt them.<br> - #4 I fear that equality in marriage for Gays will be mandated and forced into religion and other aspects of life. In Canada pastors were sued for preaching against homosexuality. Here in California two Christian doctors were successfully sued for not helping a lesbian woman have children (in-vitro planting of embryos, not delivery) even though they referred her to a doctor without religious beliefs that dictated against doing such. The case has gone to appeals of course, but it amazes me that a doctor (or anyone else) can be sued for acting in accordance with reasonable religious belief. I am a member of the LDS church and fear that individuals may sue for a right to be married in a Mormon temple; this is not even a right for members of our faith, it is a blessing and covenant only allowed to members deemed morally worthy who have a firm belief in the power of God and the temple. I fear that like in Canada we will be unable to express religious belief that may offend gays, and that we will be unable to teach against gay marriage.<br> - <br> - I think my views are reasonable and valid. I understand that many others might not view these consequences as bad. If you have taken the time to read this, thank you. This has been working in my mind for some time. I do not want others to hate me because they misunderstand my views, and that is why I wrote this note. My Dad comes form a large family, which has allowed me to see not only my parents struggle in marriage but aunts and uncles, but they live with it until they can work through it for their kids and they end up having many happy loving times.<br> + I hear many argue that having gay parents is better than having no parents or abusive parents. I believe a child has a right to be raised, no parent ever has a right above that of a child, that is why we have CPS.<br> + We are not flooded with healthy children to adopt, I know people that haven't been able to afford to or have been neglected the opportunity because they were a little too old. Most of the children in our foster care system have been taken from negligent parents (and there is a period of time the parents have to earn them back) or have disabilities (and sadly most parents don't feel they can make that commitment). We have a shortage of healthy cute infants for people to adopt... they should be put in the best homes for them, not what might be "fair" or "equal" for those attempting to adopt them.<br> + #4 I fear that equality in marriage for Gays will be mandated and forced into religion and other aspects of life. I fear that like in Canada we will be unable to express religious belief that may offend gays, and that we will be unable to teach against gay marriage.<br> + <br> + I think my views are reasonable and valid. I understand that many others might not view these consequences as bad. If you have taken the time to read this, thank you. This has been working in my mind for some time. I do not want others to hate me because they misunderstand my views, and that is why I wrote this note. I am open for conversation with anyone, just remember I really don't know how to view this without God in the picture.<br> + <br> + --Emily Brown, Student</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Front Page/Talkhttp://daviswiki.org/Front_Page/Talk2008-08-30 13:53:58TomDentonadded proposal - scrub chamonix comments <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Front Page/Talk<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 4: </td> <td> Line 4: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + = Proposal: Scrub Chamonix Comments =<br> + The Comments section of the [["Chamonix_Coffee"]] page is mainly a lengthy discussion about the evils of the past owners; the new owners are mentioned in the last comment, but the whole discussion just seems irrelevant, and perhaps harmful to a business that is now being run by reportedly very sweet people. --["Users/TomDenton"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Front Page/Talkhttp://daviswiki.org/Front_Page/Talk2008-07-25 13:21:16SunjeetBaadkar <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Front Page/Talk<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 129: </td> <td> Line 129: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + * Too true...wanna help me with it? - SB</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Front Page/Talkhttp://daviswiki.org/Front_Page/Talk2008-07-25 13:14:51PhilipNeustrom(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Front Page/Talk<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 128: </td> <td> Line 128: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> ''For a specific wiki bbq, adding to the front page is probably fine. You do not offer any of these images for sale, either individually, as a package, or included in any image collection.<br> - 3. You do not offer any of these images for download on your site. They are designed to be used, not passed off as your own.<br> - Those requirements are contrary to our ["copyrights" content license], so we'd have to write "Copyright mapAbility.com" under the images, which would look ugly on the front page. I particularly like the blue color, myself.<br> - * I don't like the globe at all. - ["JH"]<br> - * I very much like the globe, in fact it's my favorite contribution. Artistically speaking, it balances the green sign. Practically speaking, it immediately shows people from other places where Davis is. Not everyone that comes to the Davis Wiki is from the U.S., from California, or even knows where Davis is. I think all geographically-related pages should have such a feature. Many times I've been frustrated trying to figure out where a newspaper (whose article I Googled) is located. BTW, we are using it according to terms. They don't say their web site must be visible to the viewer, they just say it must be included, which we've done. --["Users/SteveDavison"]<br> - * Well, I don't totally agree but it doesn't matter. I think that it overcompensates and draws the eye away from the cool sign. And the vast majority of visitors are from California and if they aren't they are sure to find out on their own that Davis is on the west coast. My main gripe besides being an eyesore is that it seems to place Davis down where Hawaii is. I'd prefer a picture like on the front page of [http://www.davisvisitor.org/]<br> - * Is there a way to get rid of the border around the globe?<br> - * We are maybe using the graphic according to their terms (though, the "link back" is quite hidden), but not according to ["Copyrights" our terms]. This means that it is not possible for someone else to redistribute and use the globe, so we have to note otherwise (and, in the raw text isn't a very good way to do this). I think it's got to go, regardless of its artistic qualities, because of this reason -- especially because the front page is so important. It's pretty easy for someone to make a globe with Davis marked on it that looks nice, so I say they get to it!<br> - * The new "globe" (position.png and position2.png) is based on the image from the CIA factbook. The detail one needs more work, I'll update it tonight or tomorrow. Let me know what you think.<br> - * I'm of the opinion the globe+Davis locale is much better of an idea in theory than practice-- this always tends to look a bit pixel-jumbly, and really, what is the purpose? I mean, there's enough descriptive material to define Davis' location. If somehow you could zoom out of the map feature to see Davis in the context of the world, perhaps it would be better.. but right now we have-- it does appear-- a very detailed globe, shrunken, but with the shrinking, the border didn't really anti-alias as its dimensions were defined, and so we have a jaggy map. There's probably a place for a nice big globe somewhere on the wiki, but it seems to overwhelm the front page at present.<br> - * But what would be cool is a universe with earth in the foreground and Davis highlighted.. -["Users/JaimeRaba"]<br> - * Maybe everthing in the picture should be rotating around Davis? We can try and move "Getting Started" up, but it will still look strange because Explore is so long. Think the Getting Started section should be in the table?<br> - Why was the Featured Page realigned anyway? I couldn't find an explanation anywhere. It makes it pretty unreadable when some of the lines from the Featured Page seem to continue into the Events blurb. I think it was a hundred times better before. And I would vote no on putting Getting Started into the table because I think it's important enough to be very visible and go across the entire page.<br> - ["Wiki Community/Proposals"] -- Steve mentioned it there.<br> - <br> - I agree with Mike... having the left column nestle up to the right column made the page more difficult to read. I did like that it gave the Events listing a higher profile, but I didn't find that layout particularly pleasing or easy to read. If the goal was to avoid having to scroll down to see Current Events, was there a discussion about posting Current Events above Explore? If necessary, it might even be placed in a color block to balance the color in the photo that accompanies the Featured Page. BTW: I think the community should have been given greater opportunity to discuss these changes before the front page was edited, but if the goal was to get our attention, that certainly worked! --["Users/AlphaDog"]<br> - <br> - It's close to what I have in mind, but since I can't edit 'Today's Events' I can't make it exact. Move the "Events Board, Recurring Events, other Events Calendars" line out of the Explore page (it doesn't belong there) and put it in the Today's Events page. Delete '(Taken from our Events Board, where you can post events.)' since it is redundant.<br> - <br> - My philosophy is this: Featured page is the finest feature, so it should top and left. Events are timely and second most important, so put them top right. Explore is sort-of related to Featured Page since they are both about exploring the Wiki. Put it under Featured Page on the left. Mystery Picture fits well under Events and will benefit from being slightly higher up. I didn't want to push things too far, but 'Getting Started' might then be moved up into a column under the Mystery picture. It would fit nicely and I feel it would be an improvement there. You could even make the 'Getting Started' text a page of it's own and include it, like the others.<br> - --["Users/SteveDavison"]<br> - <br> - I am reverting the Front Page for now. I strongly feel that the proposed change is not an improvement, and others feel this way. So before we change things, why don't we finalize a design we can agree on using this page. My reasons for disagreeing with the proposed design are above. I think staggering small sections on both sides looks awkward and makes the text very difficult to read. With the current size of "Explore" it deserves its own column without cluttering it up with even more stuff. If we are going to move things around, let's consider redesigning the "Explore" page since it's currently by far the biggest thing on the page.<br> - <br> - It's more aesthetically pleasing not having the Featured Page on the top. --["Users/TusharRawat"]<br> - <br> - ------<br> - I like the image:<br> - <br> - http://daviswiki.org/dwiki/data/pages/Front_20Page_2fTalk/attachments/davislocation.thumbnail.131.128.png<br> - <br> - but it seems to have been deleted from the front page (only the thumbnail was there). Perhaps someone can make a picture of the globe with a zoomed in section? -- ["Users/ArlenAbraham"]<br> - <br> - I am completely against having the map just show California. The reason I created the globe view in the first place is to solve a problem people often have with websites. People search for some topic, go to a page, but find it very hard to figure out where the place is. It is a WORLD WIDE WEB. This means people from New Zealand, India, Australia, etc. are finding our web site. Since the Davis Wiki is a geographically-specific website, it follows that we should make it as stress-free to figure out where in the world we're talking about. I bet not everybody can figure out where we are from a cutout of California. On the other hand, I do believe that everyone visiting DavisWiki.org is from Earth, so a globe is appropriate and ends the discussion of "how far to zoom out". Perhaps someone can make a picture of the globe with a zoomed in section? -- ["<span>Users/</span>ArlenAbraham"]<br> <span>+</span> <br> <span>+</span> I am completely against having the map just show California. Remember, it is not for *US* -we know where we are. This is why it is imperative that we think bigger. To think only of ourselves is selfish. Not everyone on this planet knows about U.S. date formats, currency, our time zone, languages, local idioms, geography, etc. This is why we should also give metric units, decimal lat/long for locations, relative currency values, time zones, ISO dates, etc. DavisWiki is not JUST a community resource, it is our showcase to the world. --["<span>Users/</span>SteveDavison"]<br> <span>+</span> <br> <span>+</span> * For what it's worth, I'll add that I agree very strongly with Steve. Anybody who knows the region on the map likely knows where Davis is. Anybody who doesn't gets a quick idea. That's a criteria that very few items on the wish list meet.<br> + <br> + In general, it might be useful to establish criteria lists or suggested improvements for businesses in Davis in general. That's specifically why I suggested to that user that they preview. I didn't suggest it for the heck of it. If it weren't having a negative effect on the readability of the entry histories, I wouldn't care if somebody previewed or saved. It is relatively minor, but confusing the histories is generally a bad idea, especially when new editors are trying to puzzle them out. --["JabberWokky"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Front Page/Talkhttp://daviswiki.org/Front_Page/Talk2007-08-17 10:03:21JabberWokkyBig long answer too detailed for anybody to really care. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Front Page/Talk<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 139: </td> <td> Line 139: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + You'd have to write software to do it to the whole wiki, but the Jan 1 2006 In-and-Out entry was at revision 30, which can be viewed [http://daviswiki.org/In-N-Out?action=recall&amp;version=30 here]. You can also hit the image histories and pull their revisions for that date (just hit the "info" button on entries... the In-and-Out one, for instance, is [http://daviswiki.org/In-N-Out?action=info here]). Only admins can remove a revision, and I think that's been done under a dozen times in the history of the wiki. I've never done it, Philip removed somebody's social security number that was maliciously posted, if I recall correctly, but it is ''very'' rare. The entire history of the wiki is being preserved with only a few exceptions (the logo and appearance is now being preserved since April 2007). Basically, every edit made is being stored, every entry has a full history, although doing a wiki-wide rollback would require writing software to do so (and as pointed out above, some of the markup has changed over the years, so you'd get *exactly* what was saved, which might not display the same with the current version of the software... for instance, images used to be displayed with {{{thumbnail:filename.jpg}}}). In short, the data ''is'' being stored, and getting a rough wiki snapshot would be easy... getting a perfect one is possible post-April 2007, I believe (although you'd need a copy of the software history as well if you wanted to display render bugs correctly). --["JabberWokky"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Front Page/Talkhttp://daviswiki.org/Front_Page/Talk2007-08-17 04:00:54TedBuehler(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Front Page/Talk<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 136: </td> <td> Line 136: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ How do I do this?
