This page is for discussing the contents of Give Green. Shop Local..
Yes, too many external links. When possible, they can be replaced with wiki links. Where not, the existing text can be linked (instead of the link being separate) to clean up the page. But I think it's a good Davis community page and we should keep it. —CovertProfessor
-
This page is huge and out of place on here. It I'm one of the most active editors on here and I even find it intimidating to even try to deal with this page. I think we should start over at Gift guide and copy whatever is useful on this page over. —wl
-
It doesn't have to be fixed tonight and doesn't have to be fixed all by you. Why don't you just sleep on it and everyone can do a little bit? I'll do some tomorrow — can't work on it tonight. As for out of place — why? It's totally Davis both in focus and in spirit. —CovertProfessor
I am the author of the page and I have been trying to get this page up but people keep changing it - I was attempting to embed the links but they kept being removed as I was editing . . .I am happy you are commenting so I know what is going on but please be patient with someone just learning and trying to put some colors in the text. Thanks - Stacie
I think that there is hope ... but there is a lot to do to make this beautiful. May I mention a pet peeve (to be deleted when this page dies): why must images of this planet that are supposed to make us think globally focus on the North Atlantic? "Hey, no one would recognize the planet if it showed, like, Antarctica or South East Asia..." Psssh. —DougWalter
-
I suppose it's so people can look at it and go, "Hey, I can see my house from here!" The people who make the images don't want anyone to have to look at anything unpleasant, like the southern hemisphere...—JoePomidor

It's just plain strange that an entry with a title including the term "shop local" has a globe that shows other parts of the world, omitting the local area (well, maybe it's on the edge there). -jw
-
I guess the globe is supposed to be the "green" part — i.e., do something for the planet. But maybe a tree could get across a similar message. —CovertProfessor
-
Oh, I know. It's not strange-horrible, more strange-amusing in a cognitive dissonance way. The kind of thing that makes me frown in thought and chuckle. Honestly, if somebody wants to replace the image, why not actually use a local image? Something like a pile of local produce at Pedricks or a compost bin or some bottles of local olive oil (there are a couple places that make it). -jw
I did something gnomelike! Will do more later, I like this page. And I even learned of the existence of some things. Some external links should be okay, I would think, but this page could also lead to the creation of new pages as well (Davis Education Foundation?) —BrettHall
page name
I like the idea of this page but perhaps it could have a less marketing-y title? Like, "Green gift ideas" ?
-
Agreed... great idea with a very "Target Endcap Signage" name. The size is large, but it's always subject to editing. -jw
-
Green and local gift ideas? —CovertProfessor
-
I like that better, and it would lose the periods. Not that it was "wrong" for Stacie to select a title of her choosing. —DougWalter
WOW! I just stumbled across this list. What a great set of ideas. I like the globe image; not sure why the rest of you are so exercised about it? This very wiki's home page even has a globe! Better than using the overused Davis bicycle. Furthermore, I think with climate change upon us that we should be actively thinking of local actions we can take to reduce our carbon foot print now for the sake of our future and our children's future. It's great to have a list of local green gift ideas I can use...and it is all in one place. Also, I can imagine that there are so many other ideas out there that could be added to this list and be linked to this page, including taking advantage of all of the resources on the Davis wiki (what a great resource!). I loved having both internal wiki pages linked as well as the external ones because then I don't have to do as much work. My pet peeve is the number of clicks it takes me to actually get to the raw source. Whoever put all of those external and daviswiki links in is helping to reduce my work load. I am passing this wiki page on to my friends. What a great idea! Thanks for doing this. —GB

I'm glad you love the globe image; I thought my comments spoke for themselves. I don't believe this planet centers on Europe and North America, and it seems dumb for "globally-conscious" art and artists to keep using the same cliché. Photos from space look beautiful when they show the Pacific or Indian Ocean, IMO. But if you prefer this to the bike cliché, to each their own, eh? —DougWalter
WHAT A FANTASTIC LIST. The links to so many nonprofits, experiences and gift ideas will make it easy to explore gift ideas. I hope more links and ideas will be added to the list reflecting the spirit of Davis at its best.-is
I love this page, love the title, and want to thank Stacie for creating it. The bigger the better; this is a great resource. —DonShor
-
I still want to change the title, both to eliminate the periods (WTF?) and because one could conceivably confuse "cash" with "green." I'm going to wait until tomorrow, but unless someone other than Don and Stacie want to jump in, I think the change to "Green and local gift ideas" could stick. Thoughts? —DougWalter
-
It's a pretty big improvement over the current name. Go for it. =) —wl
-
"Green and local gift ideas" works. Less punchy, but more wikiyish. —DonShor
-
I would prefer that you keep the name, because the group that has put this list together is in the process of making buttons and sending emails to many people regarding this page so that we can get a lot of traffic and other updates to make this the best list it can be (as well as increase the traffic to the wiki). Also, why do green, environmentally sound, handmade and free gifts have to take a back seat to the more punchy campaigns of the retailers? We think our products are better (more thoughtful, tailored to person, less resource intensive, etc.) and we want to get the message that these products can be better gifts so we developed a name that would do just that. —StacieFrerichs
-
If you want to rely on things staying the same, it seems like this list really should have been hosted on some other website and not here. —wl
-
We can always leave a redirect from the name on your advertising to the new name of the page. It will be transparent to visitors. The periods in the name really make it much harder for someone typing it in from a button or flyer to find the page. If you hadn't already gone to press I'd have suggested using another method for directing them here like a url shortening service, or some other option. —JasonAller
-
Since the page can be redirected, I am fine with the name change - thanks for that information Jason, I thought that you all were going to wipe out the page! —StacieFrerichs
featured page
This would be a good featured page. Someone want to take a shot at a short writeup?
It's not even December yet. —wl
"Black Friday" is in two days. :-) —cp
Okay, so now it IS December. I think this is a great website and Davis Wiki should take the lead and spread the word about alternative things people can "purchase" and do for the holidays. Maybe Stacie would be willing to create as featured page?? Or someone else...I'm not savvy enough to figure it out. —gw
Can you write a short blurb for the front page and put it here? Someone? Please!
How about:
"Not sure what gifts to get for your loved ones? Well, the huge Black Friday sales at the mega-chains are long gone, but the lines are still there. Rather than spend all your time looking for parking and waiting in line, why not consider Green and Local Gift Ideas? This is a list that was compiled by a group that wants to live more responsibly - and one of the ways the community can do that is by shopping at local stores instead of the big box stores. You can also use Green and Local Gift Ideas to give you ideas and get you thinking outside the box - instead of an overpackaged trinket, why not give an experience that you can get only here?"
