Helen currently serves as Chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, after serving two terms in the California State Assembly. She began her political career as president of Davis Parent Nursery School and went on to be president of the school board and then county supervisor.

Helen lives on College Park with her husband, psychiatrist Captane P. Thomson, MD, who was the first head of Yolo County Mental Health.
