2006-05-12 19:46:49   This place is great! The food is incredible, my personal favorite is the coconut shrimp, but everything else I've had has been tasty too. And of course it's nice to see Mr. Lee and his wife doing what they do best: making mean chinese food that's free of MSG and canned veggies. —BonnieStewart

2006-05-12 22:47:55   The food is delicious, the work of a master chef. One bite of their 'General Chicken' and you will enter a state of absolute bliss so divine that you'll clean forget the fact that REAL Chinese people don't even eat deep-fried chicken. But all of that is going to change now, thanks to our new friends at Hometown. Down the street, KFC won't know what hit 'em. Step aside Colonel Sanders, make way for General Lee!!! —WesleyLeong

2006-05-14 00:32:27   It's about time! Hometown is BACK! Not only is there everything from their old menu, there is also going to be a Taiwanese dim sum. AWESOME!! —BenShmidt

2006-05-14 17:31:59   I ate there on May 12 and the food was pretty good. I will be returning in the future. —PaulAmnuaypayoat

2006-05-15 06:45:31   Mr Lee is a nice man. Friendly Cab will give an extra dollar discount for this destination. —BruceHansen

2006-05-22 18:48:13   The dim sum is up now! Mr. Lee gave me some meat gravy to put on my fried rice, and it was freakin' delicious! I had my doubts but oh man, you guys have to try the gravy. You can get a plate of rice with gravy for only $2.35, what a deal. —BonnieStewart

2006-05-22 21:28:05   aw man, the meat gravy thing is CRAZY GOOD!!!!! —BenShmidt

2006-06-03 21:30:28   this place is the best chinese food i've ever eaten in davis. i thought there wasn't good chinese food in davis until i came here today. and i've eaten at all the chinese restaurants in davis before. they really use NO MSG at this place, and the cook/owner, mr. lee, is an awesome chef. he's from taiwan. i'll probably bring more friends with me here next time. —MattHsieh

2006-06-10 13:39:31   great food, taiwanese dim sum is AWESOME!! Defintly the best chinese food in Davis. —BenLee

2006-06-30 21:42:35   I went for dinner tonight with my family and visiting parents and we had the beef noodle soup (advertised in the window in Chinese for $5.95). It was flavorful and the beef was tender. Mmm. —LillianChow

2006-07-15 13:38:35   This place is solid, the food is well cooked and the flavors are pretty good. The only disadvantage is the limmited menu, and the fact that it is connected to the quicky mart next door, with no separation. the owners are very nice and they really cook the vegetables well (not overdone). —MattHh

2006-07-15 21:49:36   The Generals Chicken is as good as you'll find in any 5 star restaurant. On an interesting level, make sure he knows you read about him on the internet-they seem to believe that nobody uses the internet for dining info. —DavidWebb

2006-08-01 19:06:00   My God, the eggplant in garlic sauce is heavenly. I love the beef noodle too!!! —BenShmidt

2006-08-04 20:04:43   I was super excited about this place, and the food is alright. I like Hunan's general chicken better, but this place makes the chicken deep-fried which is different. The chow mein is really good, and I want to go back for the dim sum and because the guy is REALLY nice. He convinced my boyfriend and I to buy the same thing, but in a different combo, to save money. I like this place because of him, and next time I'll try some different stuff. —ChristyMarsden

2006-08-13 12:00:49   Had the beef noodle today! Was really good flavor with LOTS of chunks of beef! They garnish it with cilantro & green onions so if you aren't a fan, you should say so. Also tried the Taiwan style rice noodles. Heaping plate of noodles with shrimp, mushrooms, etc. Great flavor + had leftovers! —KatYu

2006-08-16 14:23:01   First off, it took me forever to find this place, because the building is attached to a Chevron. Second of all, what in the world is everyone ordering that is so good? I just posted two pictures (not sure on the actual names) and the food was just alright. If you want a mountain of food, it's a good place for that though. —WinstonLee

2006-08-17 23:33:12   oh my God, if you want something good, fast, and cheap, the meat gravy over rice is the way to go. I just had one today, and i was eating it about 90 seconds after ordering it. —KevinGer

2006-08-18 14:11:28   While the fast food isn't particularly special, the beef noodle soup is excellent and gives Davis Noodle City a run for its money. The owners are very nice too. —AndrewChen

2006-08-25 13:00:10   I didn't know this, but they offer chinese dumplings also. They're pretty tasty. —Users/BenSchmidt

2006-09-05 03:35:34   Ok. Their beef noodle is the only place in Davis that has the closest taste to Taiwan. I will try the pork chop with rice next time, I'm very excited to find something like this. —JessicaYang

2006-09-17 21:15:29   My fiancee and I checked this place out yesterday on the generally good recommendations of you wiki-ers. She had the General Chow's, I had the Chicken in Black Bean sauce. I also ordered the rice with meat gravy. First off, the rice with gravy was very flavorful — however, the meat bits were almost entirely pure fat. Both of our entrees were VERY flavorful (much more so than your typical Chinese) and we were very impressed. The chicken in black bean sauce was especially good. The portion sizes were large. I'd say the flavor of the food is most similar to something you've find at Pick Up Stix (except better). We will be returning. BTW, a bunch of Asians eating there were eating some kind of noodle soup served in big udon bowls. It looks very good. Anybody know what that was? —AlexPomeranz

2006-09-23 18:44:32   This place does live up to the hype. The garlic eggplant that I got was cooked about perfectly, the sauce was flavorful, and the portion was large. Even the chow mein was ridiculously good—not slimy like other places. Woo. —SteveKent

2006-10-09 15:58:01   I thought the food was low quality. The dim sum menu seem to look good but the entrees are just okay. It's like something you make when you're in a hurry or you're too lazy to cook. —KiwiSelina

2006-11-18 17:12:12   mr. lee is friendly. His chicken in black bean sauce is awesome. I may be white...but you know...i like it. —CraigMerry

2006-11-28 03:10:31   A colleague from China introduced me to Steve and to Hometown Restaurant, and I agree with his assessment that it is the best Chinese restaurant in Davis. Steve is very friendly and will cook off-menu requests or "whatever is good that day". For fun, ask for his opinion of the American Chinese fare served elsewhere in town - "it's all like paste!". —SimonChan
