2009 Candidate Statement

Hi Everyone,

I’m Joemar Clemente, a third year Political Science and Science & Technology Studies double major, minoring in Asian American Studies. Last quarter I ran with LEAD, but this quarter I’m running as an independent. Most people who run and lose tend to walk away from the association all together, but I refuse to walk away because I am determined to serve our campus community on the Senate table.

I currently serve as one of the ranking members-at-large for the Academic Affairs Commission. I drafted legislation supporting the library and helped craft the new General Education requirements and attended numerous programs and conferences that discuss issues facing members of our campus communities.

As a student Senator:

Please help me advocate for you by voting JOEMAR CLEMENTE #1 for ASUCD Senate!!!

2008 Candidate Statement and Activities

Hey Aggies! I am Joemar Clemente, a third year Political Science and Science & Technology double major. I currently serve on the Academic Affairs Commission and am running for Senate under the Leadership Empowerment Activism Determination (LEAD) slate.

Past Experience:

* Student Representative

Platform Issues

* Lobby to increase the number of free prints & the number of color printing in the campus computer rooms:

Currently, each student is allotted 90 free printouts from the campus computer rooms. If you're like me and have many printouts for every class, you go over the allotted amount every quarter and have to pay excess fees. If elected, I will advocate for an increase of this amount for every student by lobbying the university. Granted, accomplishing this issue will be extremely difficult given the deep budget cuts of this year.

Did you know that UCD offers color printing? Yes, they offer color printing, but color printing is charged separately from the allotted 90 pager per quarter. If elected, I will work with IET to help make color printing more visible to students on campus.

* Centennial Concert

This year we celebrate our centennial and what better way to celebrate our 100th birthday than to hold the concert of the century to benefit our student government's philanthropic Cal Aggie camp program for underprivileged youth. Cal Aggie camp provides a sanctuary to underprivileged youth with UCD student role-models.

* Advocate for an increase in university library funding:

Compared to other UCs, UC Davis' funding to the university library has remained the same. For years, the library and its staff have been forced to serve an ever-growing student population with a stagnant budget. A top-tier university like UC Davis demands a top-notch library. As a student Senator, I will LEAD to lobby the administration to increase funding for the library and restore this great campus resource to its proper standing.

* Bring more transparency to the Academic Senate:

The Academic Senate institutes policies behind closed doors that directly impact students. Although in the past, there have been attempts by the Academic Affairs Commission to render the Academic Senate more transparent, many times student representatives are unable to attend committee meetings due to scheduling conflicts. ASUCD must facilitate more coordination between student representatives & student government. We must also ensure student representation in the various committees, currently there are only student representatives on only a few committees.

2008-11-11 15:21:31   To me, transparency is an even bigger problem on the Administrative Advisory Committees than on the Academic Senate ones. Do you have any plans to address problems in that system? —BrentLaabs

2008-11-11 17:41:52   By the way, these are the kind of issues that I would like to see addressed in ASUCD: student services, advocacy, and governance all together. Good work. Joemar gets my #3 endorsement-like statement. (Fall 2008 Election only) —BrentLaabs

2008-11-11 23:59:32   As a former Academic Senate representative, I agree something needs to be done to improve the process. I met with Vanderhoff about this issue at the end of the 2006-2007 year, and voiced my concerns about these communications to University Affairs as well, but I am unsure if anything has been done on either end to improve these issues. We should meet up over Christmas break to discuss how to fix this problem. ....Speaking of which, although I am skeptical about this candidate's grasp of economic issues, if I were voting for anyone other than Greg and Justin, I would vote for Joemar #4. —JoseBleckman

2009-02-19 20:47:38   Joemar, even though I've been a bit spammed by the API/Filam orgs, I really liked you for #1. API representation, SRRC representation, Sci/Engineering representation; its all good.

Please contact me, regardless of the results of this election because I would like to talk to you about how to expand the presence of Sci/Engineers in ASUCD.

I'm not too involved with DavisWiki, but I'd like to give Joemar my #1 endorsement-like statement —JonathanChee
