After moving in, you may (like myself) find a need to make copies of apartment, mailbox, and/or bike keys. In my own experience, I found it difficult to get a straight answer out of Davis residents about where to go do this. I found my luck at:
One of the Ace Hardware stores. The Lock section is in the hardware section which is south of gardens and pets in the section between 3rd Street and 4th Street. Once in that building the lock section is in the middle of the back half (eastern half).
Rare keys and more services can be found at Davis Lock & Safe Co., but I think they're only open by appointment.
If you're affiliated with UC Davis, you might be issued a key or two for various buildings and rooms on campus. Contrary to popular belief, there is no one master key for the entire campus. For one thing, most of the campus uses Medeco cylinders, yet the dorms use Schlage cylinders. Something like a master key does exist, however. It's a gigantic keychain of master keys, four for the four Medeco lock systems on campus and a bunch of other keys for a few other things. They're stored at a central facility in a series of individually-assigned lockboxes which are checked at the end of the day. They aren't allowed off campus, period.
