Dean specialized in criminal defense and civil rights activism. He was active in the Yolo County ACLU and the Sacramento NAACP.
He has a police misconduct story and was one of the leading voices for reform in the Davis Police Department.
On November 12th 2005, Dean recieved the Courage Award from the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
