| ''2009-05-28 12:03:14'' [[nbsp]] I was also a former employee at Peak Performance. I left because I got a job offer from a member there. I've worked and been a member at multiple gyms in the past, and this is easily the worst managed. The owner, Chris, is a joke. Someone made a comment about employees talking about how much they hate their job and for good reason. The owner manages out of fear and intimidation. He made it so he could watch the cameras in the gym at his house and threatened us with termination if he saw anything bad (we have had absolutely no history of stealing, etc). We get no breaks, and when we mentioned that state law requires one, he said to stop complaining and be thankful we have a job. To make us work harder, he took away all of our incentives. He doesn't even consider giving you a raise from minimum wage unless you've worked there a year. No one has ever gotten a raise. Its no wonder there's such a high employee turnover rate... 3 new people one month, 2 the next, 3 after that, and SIX the next. When I worked at another gym, my boss (who I called to thank for being so great after having to deal with Chris) wanted us to stay because we knew the members and they knew us. You'd be lucky to see the same face a month later when you walk in. When we had a group meeting about all this, he displayed a spectacle of immaturity by yelling "I don't care!" while crossing his arms and looking away. This shows his intelligence when he's being rude to the people (us) who deal with the member's (your) credit card information. As for shady, I wouldn't say so much, although he did teach how to strategically fold towels so members won't see stains. An old lady had to cancel her membership because she lost her job, and a month later she was able to save enough money for 1 month because she missed working out with her friends there. She came back, and the owner denied her because she couldn't pay the initiation fee again which she ALREADY PAID before. This is the guy who would be getting your money if you signed up. As for the gym, it's pretty basic. I would never pay $50 for that place, but unfortunately your options are limited in this town. I've been to places twice as big for half the price. Member's are always complaining to me, whether it's about how to place went to Hell once Christ took over, or how they can never get the machine they want. The locker rooms are disgusting and always smell terrible. The best part of the gym is the Women's Center, but unfortunately he took the door down. The good thing about Chris is that he's usually there if you need to talk to him. You can find him in his office most of the day or flirting with the 18 y/o child care supervisor. --["Users/hook2288"] | ''2009-05-28 12:03:14'' [[nbsp]] I was also a former employee at Peak Performance. I've been in Davis for some time and have, at various times been a member at the Rec Hall [pre-ARC], 24-Hour, Davis Athletic Club, and Peak Performance. At one point I let my Peak membership lapse and tried a brief stint at 24-Hour... I came back to Peak in a hurry! Unlike 24-Hour, Peak is a very clean, well-ventilated facility. Though the hours are shorter, the cleanliness and friendliness of the staff are well worth adjusting my schedule a bit. DAC was a great gym, and it offers a wider range of facilities, including a full size pool & sauna, but their prices reflect all the extras that I just wasn't making use of. The Rec Hall was a drag because it would close for events like concerts, graduation ceremonies, etc... now that it's expanded though, things might be different. The other downside to the Rec Hall is that it would get ridiculously crowded during peak hours and I absolutely refuse to go to a gym and have to sign up and *wait* for a piece of equipment. Heck, it's hard enough to drag my butt down there without wasting another twenty waiting for a stairmaster! And as for 24-Hour, well, I think I'd classify it as the ghetto gym... overcrowded, stanky, dirty, and staffed by steroid pumped bouncers who can't even give you a straight line about how much a membership costs. —AlphaDog
2005-11-19 21:18:20 Peak is by far the best gym in Davis. 24 hour fitness back in the bay area is great. In Davis, it is pathetic. The weights all have white out on them so you know the difference between a 25 and a 27.5. Plus they're haggard and it really brings an uneasy feeling every time they are over your face because you aren't sure if they're going to fall on you. Peak has everything you need and a very friendly staff. Oh yeah, good classes too. All included in the membership. —JeremyTaylor
2006-02-27 15:34:03 My fiance and I just joined, and so far, have been impressed. What really caught our eye is the 2 hours a month of free personal training. That's usually 60 bucks an hour. Definitely helped start us off on the right foot to have a trainer go through what would work best with our goals. —JoeMinewiser
2006-03-12 15:40:48 Overall a good gym. Decent equipment, clean. Gripes are the lack of locker space during peak evening times. Small, overcrowded, limited hours daycare. Not alot of membership dues supplementing things you never use like at Davis Athletic Center (pool, indoor soccer), but the gym area is much smaller. —UsetheForce
2006-09-13 16:43:22 I like this place. The women's room is especially nice if you want to do your little weight routine without being around a bunch of men. I actually graduated up to being more comfortable working out in the regular gym for cardio. But I think this is a great first step! —RachelCakes
2006-10-29 11:26:55 I had a great experience with Peak Performance. What I loved most about this place was the two free hours of personal training a month. They are very helpful and don't try to pressure you into paying for personal training. —EmmyMelton
2007-03-30 16:07:30 This is a really nice gym. The parking is fine, the music is not too loud to listen to an iPod, the people are friendly, and the equipment is new and well cared for. —GreenThing
2007-04-25 16:29:43 We have belonged to this gym for about 2 years. I guess it's still cleaner than some gyms I've been in, but it definitely could use better ventilation and a lowered thermostat. It can get really hot in there, and it stinks, even first thing in the morning (5 am). —DavisGradStudent
2007-05-16 04:32:53 Once you've gone to the UCD ARC this place is like a hole in the wall —christinegallo
2007-07-04 15:13:17 Great gym. I've been a member off and one since 2002. My only complaint is that it is freakishly crowded by the SAHM crowd from about 9 to 12 then the lunch crowd shows up. After 5, it's packed too. Now that I live in Davis, I can use it off peak hours and it's lovely. My other complaint is the huge glass window between the weight area and the dance room. They used to have a belly dancing class that I always wanted to take but didn't because I hated the guys looking in. —Renngrrl
2007-08-26 16:01:55 Being a SAHM, I can explain the "Freakish crowd" (which is kind of a hurtful thing to say). It's crowded then because that's when the gym offers free childcare and when most moms have the time to come to the gym. I hve to agree about the windows between the Group Exercise Room and the weight room, there should be blinds, I'm tired of being gawked at when I'm in "Happy Baby" or some other vunerable pose that might expose my panties. Peak is very responsive, though, if enough people tell Tori that there should be blinds on the windows, she'll get them put in. Any time I had an issue, Tori handled it right away as best as she could. Note to other gym members, please don't use strong fragrances in your lotion, shampoos, hair spray as such. Nothing creates an asthma attack better than coming into the locker room after a hard workout only to breathe in noxious artifical fumes from oblivious people getting ready. Buy unsented products for the gym or use them outside, please! —ElisaWeller
2007-08-30 18:47:49 This is a great gym! The classes alone are worth the money. This place is cleaner than any other gym, but it is kind of small. If you're into squashball then go to the ARC, but otherwise this gym is great! —KlareWhite
2007-09-20 20:18:47 If I'm correct, the business was sold by Sean Shimada and Richard Robertson to Tre Fratelli Investments on 2007-08-09. —SteveDavison
2007-09-25 07:57:43 You are correct that it sold. Tre Fratelli is locally owned by 3 brothers who grew up in Davis and worked at Peak. —BevWard
2007-11-16 13:52:19 I have really enjoyed using Peak for the last couple of years. But since this ownership change, I'm not liking what I'm seeing. I'm a morning exerciser, and the other morning I arrived at 5:45am for my daily workout. Needless to say, the gym was not open (normal opening times are at 5am) and a crowd had gathered. Sure, some front desker slept in, but when the new owner (or who I think is the new owner, all of about 22 years) did show up at nearly 6am, rather than politely apologize at the irritated crowd, he actually yelled AT US!! Not a good way to introduce yourself to the regular members. One of my buddies had mentioned the new owners weren't exactly great to their employees either. Regardless, it's the nicest place in town. I just hope the new kids running the place don't mess up a good thing. —mikejacobs
2007-11-29 17:55:32 Peak Performance is giving less and less to their customers. They used to have two free sessions when you signed up and now it's only one I think that's so cheap. They used to also give deals if you were only signing up for a month or something like that but they stopped that too. Everytime I inquire about an great deal that they're advertising, I call in and they "don't do that anymore." Also everytime I call in the guy answers, "Hello?" I was like, "Is this Peak Performance?" and he was like, "Yeah?" I asked to talk to the manager and he was on his way out and refused to talk to me. HORRIBLE SERVICE. I think the new owners are really young and dumb and need to get a degree in business before they try to manage a company. —dvntboy
2007-11-29 20:25:59 The new owners not only treat their employees like shit they also threat their members that way too! The three “owners” don’t make any decisions without their daddy’s approval. Dan is running the show behind the curtain just like Oz. Although Peak was the best gym in town while owned by the Shimadas is no longer the case! —kmc
2007-12-03 11:28:06 I agree with the other members that Peak is not the same as it used to be since the new owners have taken over. The childcare employees do not acknowledge us when we come in or leave. They used to be happy to see us and would always say hello or goodbye. They do not interact with the kids at all and they just look bored. There are no nametags for the kids anymore and the employees didn't seem to know or care about it. I have also heard many complaints from friends that say they plan to join another gym now. It's not as clean, the wonderful employees have all left, and the new staff is unprofessional. Old owners, please come back!! —Shana
2007-12-03 13:05:43 Peak is by far the best gym in town. After being a DAC for years, I am impressed by how clean the gym is and how personable the staff as well as the new owners are. I always get greeted with a smile and a hello. In response to some of the negative comments posted here, I don't agree. I have know the old and new owners for years and there is always going to be growing pains when a business changes hands. Having said that, I would encourage anyone looking to join the gym to ignore the hurtful comments and come experiance it for themselves. The brothers are doing a great job and will continue to make it the best gym in town! —Chad
2007-12-05 14:26:42 I could probably nitpick about issues with this gym too but I definitely wouldn't insult the way childcare handles their job. Everytime I glance into their room they seem to be doing their very best while dealing with multiple screaming kids. I honestly don't know how they do what they do. I would never have that kind of patience. I've also never personally had any problems with the staff or management but I have waited at the front desk a few times because no one was there to check me in. But really, it's not that big of a deal. I think some of these reviews are pretty outrageous and contain a rather delusional perspective. —Xellyfer
2007-12-06 16:41:13 While I did try to get past all the 'changes' that have happened at Peak over the last few months, I'm officially fed up with the new staff. my girlfriend inquired after some of her favorite instructors, hoping they were just on vacation and was snapped at by one of the managers. We have heard that a few of the instructors may be heading to Dac, and that's where we'll be heading too. It really is too bad because Peak used to be such a great place and I will miss it. —mikejacobs
2007-12-31 11:54:12 I had been a member since 2005 and until they changed owners i was really happy. Since the change in ownership I have experienced a change in the attitude of the employees. Rather than being friendly, now they are rude and discourteous. In addition today i checked my bank account and peak performance withdrew funds before my agreed upon due date. It has always been the 4th of each month since i started my membership. All of the sudden and without notification they decided to change my due date to the 31st of each month. I am quitting peak performance TODAY —flyec
2007-12-31 11:59:58 OH and the "chad" that just posted a positive comment (12/3/2007) works at Peak Performance. I just called and he answered the phone. —flyec

That may be a coincidence...
2008-01-08 13:59:30 Peak used to be the best gym in Davis until the Shimada's sold it. The new owners are awful and all the personal trainers that used to be there are gone now. Don't sign a membership here, it's definitely not worth it. —zxcvb
2008-01-10 08:34:29 I am the Chad that posted, and no I don't work there. I am just a member like everyone else. —Chad
2008-03-05 14:42:33 I was uncertain about some of the changes implemented after Peak was sold, but I am really glad I waited it out. A few weeks ago the gym bought and installed more than 30 brand-new cardio machines. Even better still, they *FINALLY* got rid of the horrible hip hop/R&B tunes in favor of classic rock. Now I hear the likes of David Bowie and the Police on the audio system instead of "Make yo booty go smack." —SugarPlum
2008-04-24 16:30:05 I joined Peak last fall. Although I am only able to get there once or twice a week, I totally find it worthwhile because of the classes. Every one I have been to is excellent, especailly the boot camp classes taught by Kristen, who is a fabulous instructor. I have felt real results from them. It would be great if they had more classes during off-hours -if you work M-F during regular busioness hours & more than 2 minutes way from the facility, it can be hard to get to the classes. I wuold go a lot more often if I could. —Dora5
2008-06-06 10:59:42 The staff is very rude, they seem so un-happy to be at work and show it. They can sometimes be overheard complaining about there job. Makes me uncomfrotable. Other then that it's nice. Clean, pleanty of equipment, great class selection. If only the staff would pretend to smile hello to you this place would be perfect. —isikins
2008-06-07 19:30:21 This place is great. Nice and clean great equipment and competent staff. But it doesn't take alot to make me happy after ditching that CRAPHOLE davis swim and fitness. —Kicker
2008-07-02 20:21:00 Is this place still crazy crowded all the time? I was considering going back but I hated having to constantly wait for the elipticals to open up.
**and to clarify a previous post: I said it was "freakishly" crowded as in abnormally crowded, had nothing to do with judging the SAHMs** —Renngrrl
2008-08-28 00:45:35 Peak Performance and DAC have the same rates ($49/month) , but Peak Performance doesn't have a pool? Is it so much better than DAC that it doesn't need one with those high rates? —Lala
-
How many of the overweight good ol' boy clerks munching on fast food burgers behind the front counter at DAC does it take to screw in a light bulb? One big one to munch and watch the janitor who gets paid by the hour to stay in shape climbing ladders and changing light bulbs.—SecretAgentMan
2009-02-01 10:05:48 you guys are trippin...why is everything in Davis so damn expensive? i use to pay $24/month at 24 hr fitness sport and $28 at Ballys. You should be able to take home weight lifting equipment for free if you paying $49/month. —MilindIsALiar It does cost money to run a business. If you like to save money, go to you local dumpster to fish out some weight set and use it in your living room.—khangdefoo
2009-02-11 22:50:51 As a previous employee of Peak I would not recommend this gym to anyone. Chris is the manager that runs it and he is awful. He has no management experience and is a horrible boss. He treats his employees like shit. It's no wonder he goes through so many employees. The gym is rarely properly cleaned. And Chris is also very shady. BEWARE. —sychromom
2009-04-16 09:24:16 I used to be a member for about 5 months. This place was always busy around 5-6pm. At least I'm a woman, so the woman's room was available. Otherwise, have fun trying to find a machine at that time! While working out during a lull time, mid-morning, an older man, perhaps the manager?, was annoyed with the employee's cleaning around the machine. I was on an elliptical and this man tipped the machine next to me to clean under it. He hit my hand and gave no attention to what he was doing. I was sick at how he treated the employee and how he seemed to give no care to the customer. —doggies9
