2010-01-05 19:56:13 I understand why Pat wanted "Departed Businesses" moved, but leaving it the way it is now is also misleading and not good for Roxie's business, either. People might not see the line about the new location and the new name. We need a way to make it clearer that there is a new location and that comments should be directed to the new page. Suggestions? —CovertProfessor
2010-01-07 15:13:26 I think we could retire this page altogether if I can move the comments to Roxie's new page without bringing the wrath of the wiki cops down on me. Jabberwokky said I copied them wrong (I just did a cut and paste) and consequently lost all the links. I can't find info on how to do this correctly, and bring the links along. Any help would be appreciated. —patquinn
2010-01-07 16:01:17 Those comments were made about the other place of business, maybe some of those people might not want to have their comments appliedto the new place. It is sort of taking their comments out of context. Who are these "Wiki Cops" you keep referring to? —JasonAller
2010-01-07 16:18:55 Well, if you choose "raw" on the version of the page you want to copy from the info page (
http://daviswiki.org/Roxie_at_David%27s_Haircutting?action=info) then you can paste the comments you want from there. If you paste the raw wiki text, it will preserve the links. —NickSchmalenberger
2010-01-07 20:10:25 In general, we don't "retire" pages around here. The wiki aims to document everything about Davis, including its history. And part of its history is that Roxie operated her business out of David's for awhile. And I think Jason's point is valid, and that the experience of going to Roxie's at David's may be different from the experience at the new salon. It might even be better. —CovertProfessor
2010-01-11 17:04:38 I have removed the statement that someone added that this no longer exists. It still exists, just at a different location. It is misleading to say that Roxie no longer exists as a business entity in Davis. She has moved to her a new location. Can we please leave her old page alone? I have noted that she's moved on the page. Isn't that enough? Thanks,
Pat —patquinn

Is Roxie doing business at David's Haircutting? Did she at one point? Who does the page serve? Does it serve the community, or does it serve Roxie? Who are these "Wiki Cops" you have referred to?—JasonAller

Pat, you mean, you just came along and deleted someone's else's edit without consulting anyone? We're all trying to figure out what a "wiki cop" is. Maybe that is something that a wiki cop does?
The edit that you deleted did not imply that "Roxie" no longer exists as a business entity. Roxie never existed as a business entity. Roxie is a person. She used to have a business at David's Haircutting. She no longer does. The page indicates where her new business is.
If she is any kind of businesswoman, she has all of her clients' phone numbers and has called them to tell them where she has moved to. And I expect that she has done just that.
2010-01-13 15:57:26 I am sorry that our communications are so muddy. I am a friend of Roxie's and trying to help with her presence on the wiki. She has opened a new business in Davis, and we all want our downtown to thrive and be successful, so we all want Roxie's new business to succeed. Don't we? I am trying to avoid having her old page (Roxie at David's haircutting) give the impression that Roxie is no longer doing business in Davis. And my intention in wanting her comments to follow her is that eventually the old page will no longer be referenced and all those comments risk being lost. I am sorry that my reference to the wiki cops has been taken so offensively. But that's what it feels like. I want to work with you guys, but I don't know how, and what I have tried has not been successful. —patquinn

The old page will never be lost. If you take a look at the pages you've been editing you'll see that a variety of people have tried to help out. One bit of advice that might really help you out is to find some pages that have nothing to do with Roxie and edit them. You'll gain some more insight into the wiki, and other editors won't view you as only being here for one purpose. Many single interest editors have expressed frustration with the wiki, and it isn't a one sided conflict. This wiki was created by people who were trying to document nifty things about Davis. It would never have gotten to the size or level of visibility it has without their efforts. Together skills for engaging in collaborative editing were developed. Along the way there were those who got cross threaded with the wiki and some of them never resolved their issues. On the other hand the vast majority of editors have managed to work together to create something pretty nifty. Whoever create the page The Dog Bench, wasn't doing it to promote a business, but the wiki would be much less nifty if that page had never been created. —JasonAller

Speaking personally — yes, I want the downtown to thrive and be successful. But please understand that the purpose of the wiki is not to promote any particular business, or even the downtown in general. The purpose is to serve as a resource for the Davis community. Thus, both good and bad comments are retained, text that is too "ad-like" or promotional is removed, and the pages should reflect what is true and accurate. And in this case, what is true and accurate is that "Roxie at David's Haircutting" no longer exists. I have tried various ways to make that clear while still directing the community to Roxie's new business, but you've been unhappy with all of them. I have tried yet another one. Maybe you will like it better. But keep in mind that it is not up to you and me — it is up to the consensus of the people who edit the wiki. So, even if you like my change, others may not. —CovertProfessor
2010-01-15 08:37:34 Thank you! Yes, the banner now reflects what is happening. I'm learning. I am a 63 year old woman who has worked in technology probably longer than most of you have been alive. (Not to play the age card, but just to give perspective.)I understand and applaud the collaborative goals of a wiki (we have one at work that I use), but you might not be in touch with the audience if you are ignoring the business aspects of the wiki.
Anyway, life goes on. We all take what we need, and hopefully give back something of use to someone else.
Yes, I agree — everything works best when everyone involved communicates and works towards a livable solution. I'm not so young after all, and if it's one thing that I have learned (sometimes the hard way) it is the importance of compromise. —CovertProfessor
2010-01-15 14:50:55 I was thinking we could also make this page a redirect to Avante Garde Studio because Roxie at David's Haircutting wasn't around for very long anyway, compared to the old Roxies on D Street. Moving/rearranging the comments appropriately of course. —NickSchmalenberger

That would lose the history *and* probably be more confusing for people who think Roxie is still at David's. —CovertProfessor
