The
Safe Party Initiative was launched on
Sept. 27, 2005
What is the Safe Party Initiative?
The Safe Party Initiative (SPI) arose from a five-year, $6.9 million study of alcohol-related problems at 14 California universities, awarded to the Prevention Research Center by the National Institute for Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA). It is a joint effort between the City of Davis and UC Davis. The goal of the initiative is to educate the community about the importance of safe and responsible partying. As part of the Safe Party Initiative, Health Education and Promotion offers tips and suggestions for party hosts and guests, student-led education, neighborhood community programs, etc.
e-CHUG
The e-CHUG survey is a free and anonymous assessment of your drinking behavior. It provides interesting comparisons to your typical drinking behavior, such as how much money you spend on alcohol per month and how many cheeseburgers you “drink” in calories. It also discusses your personal Blood Alcohol Concentration while drinking, how various factors contribute to your BAC, how your drinking compares to other UC Davis students, and other risk factors. Best of all, after completion of the survey, current UC Davis students can bring their printed certificate of completion to the Health Center Annex to get 25% off a HEP T-shirt (normally $10)!
Take the e-CHUG quiz and save 25% off a cool t-shirt

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Issues interns are available to conduct programs for residence halls, fraternities, sororities and other student organizations. The two programs currently available are Buzzed: Alcohol Jeopardy and When the Price is Wrong, a program designed to detail the positive choices renters can make, as well as the consequences of bad party-thrower decision making.

Cowell Student Health Center website.
TIPS Training
The Safe Party Initiative collaborates not only with law enforcement and community members, but also with world wide programs related to safe service, sale, and consumption of alcohol, namely TIPS. TIPS, "Training for Intervention Procedures" provides certification for party hosts and focuses on preventing intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving. It also provides training for students dealing with alcohol related emergencies as well as how to intervene to help prevent such situations. This is one of the many services offered by the Cowell Student Health Center. For information about this as well as other programs offered, please visit
http://healthcenter.ucdavis.edu/hep/atod/index.html These collaborative efforts help spread the message of the SPI and put its principles into practice.
