SickSpits

SickSpits is a UCD-based collective of spoken word artists.

Bringing exuberant energy and cutting-edge creativity to Davis, Sacramento, the Bay Area, and beyond - members of this group seek to share their personal stories and revelations in an accessible and powerful way to create more accepting, understanding, and profound local and global communities.

History

SickSpits was established in 2005 by members of iLL-literacy, a performance poetry group formerly based in Davis.

Former members of the collective include Jeyel Gonzales, Carlo Santos, Robin Joseph, Tezeta Stewartz, Nalan Subeno, Melanie Amano, Simone Davis (Simoetry, Founder), Elyssa White (Elicit), Ruby Ibarra, Sasa Afredi, Jamon Larry, Shannon Harney, Alex Gonzalez (Spoken Bird), Shane Salter, and Grinnil Khanna (Grafik G).

Sickspits has shared the stage with artists Amir Sulaiman, ill-Literacy, Do-Dat, Zion-I, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, The Neighborhood Watch, Butterscotch, Leejay Abucayan, Chinaka Hodge, Coconique, Random Abiladeze, Skim, Adriana Cabrera Garcias, Alpha MC, VerBS, Koba Sounds, the U.C. Berkeley and U.C. Santa Cruz slam teams, Quincey Troupe, and others.

Events

SickSpits hosts open mic nights on the first Tuesdays of every month in Griffin Lounge (part of the Memorial Union) and performs at myriad student-organized events. In addition, the collective hosts a popular annual event, The Movement, which showcases the four pillars of hip-hop culture.
