Sigma Alpha Epsilon started in Davis as a local fraternity known as "Phi Alpha Iota" which had a house on the 200 block of A St. The location has since burned down and been replaced by the off-campus book store. Phi Alpha Iota was founded in 1913 on the UC-Davis extension (at the time) making SAE the oldest running fraternity in Davis. In 1952 around the time when UCD became its own campus, Phi Alpha Iota found Sigma Alpha Epsilon as the national society which best matched their own ideals of being True Gentlemen and sponsored the start of the California Kappa chapter of SAE. In the early 70's SAE moved to a house at the end of Russell called "Cactus Corners". + + In the late 80s, SAE was known for being the largest and most social house on campus. The house on occasion would throw 50+ keg parties completely open. The house would actually buy all the kegs in the area to ensure that no other fraternity could top them on any party weekend. This of course led to their demise by the Davis community. In the 87-88 school year, Eddie Money made an epic appearance to perform in the SAE back yard, a signed shirt still hangs in the halls to signify this event. In 1978 SAE left the Cactus Corners house to its present location on 521 Russell. In the 1980's Mike Lyon had purchased the property on 521 Russell, which is the largest group living property in Davis at nearly 2 acres. As a result of SAE's epic social image, the Cal-Kappa chapter was awarded "Party House of the Year" by Playboy magazine. The house to this day still receives and honorary monthly subscription. But none of this went unnoticed by the university, in 1988 after a series of complaints by surrounding neighbors of misconduct and several other casualties of partying, SAE's charter was put on suspension for 10 years. + + In 1996 a group of alumni and students formed the Cal-Kappa colony to re-establish Sigma Alpha Epsilon's legacy at UC Davis.
