However, the bar manager/owner of this place was such an ass to me when I was trying to have an event there -- I am completely turned off now. We ended up having the event at G street, where the bar manager actually returned my calls and was SO helpful and amenable (Sophia's guy didn't return several messages over a two week period, I had to actually go into the restaurant to hunt him down). Bad business! After dealing with Sophia's and then dealing with the manager at G street I was literally SHOCKED by the difference in the way things are handled from bar to bar. I'm glad it worked out in the end - but I do not recommend this place if for any reason you might have to deal with the owner -- so not worth it! --["Users/soledad101"]<br> - ------</span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Sophia's Thai Kitchenhttp://daviswiki.org/Sophia%27s_Thai_Kitchen2009-10-09 09:56:12LokiAbbi(quick edit) <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Sophia's Thai Kitchen<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 207: </td> <td> Line 207: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + Just a note, we had a Thai student and brought him to all the Thai restaurants and Sophia's was his favorite. Happy Hour is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm if you want to strategically plan your evening.<br> + I hastily make my way down the steps and make a hard right with a familiar sight – good old Davis Noodle City. I wonder to myself why it never occurred to me to investigate anything beyond Davis Noodle City whenever I ate there. I am greeted with a host who seemed rather surprised to see me. I am promptly asked if I would like to sit inside our outside (in their courtyard area). After another quick glance around and up, I notice rain clouds forming and turn to look at him with a wry but well-intentioned smile and reply with a bit of enthusiasm, “inside sounds nice”.<br> + Inside was fairly dark presumably to incite the “spirit, all compact of fire”. I could imagine a different scene during our warm summer nights where mellow tea lights resembling fireflies accompany the absence of sunlight and young star-crossed lovers gaze into each other’s eyes while exchanging bites of their dinner. Instead, there was a father who was taking his daughter out for lunch after a soccer match I presume, since she was in uniform, and an older couple who just looked like they wanted to have Thai for lunch and outside rain clouds were forming, which is unusual for a Summers afternoon in Davis. Its charm is perhaps not at its zenith during lunch, this is perhaps where former 2k Thai, Thai Nakorn, and Thai Bistro have been able to outperform Sophia’s but I am hoping at this point that the food and most importantly the tea, would redeem the fact that I’ve visited Sophia’s at the wrong time of the day. Sophia’s in the afternoon reminds of an old tavern out of a Tolkien novel: its charm stripped away during daylight hours and miraculously coming to life at night with festivities and merry songs. Despite the fact that rain clouds were forming, it seemed as if sunlight would be struggling to make its way into the dining area regardless. I realize that I am at a romantic restaurant mid-afternoon without a date, so when asked where I would like to sit inside, I naturally pointed to the “Thai Room”, designed to be intimate but much like an arena for couples to square off (there were four tables designed for four couples, one table for each couple, on each side of room). Now I’ve really set myself up for a good time. This just means my food will get all the attention it needs; the mood should be there as well. I am prompted (politely) to take off my flip-flops and put them in an upright cubby designed to hold shoes.<br> + I was delighted to discover that the cushions they provided for the literal floor seating was large enough for two people to share and further that there was the option for a patron to have two! One was more than enough however. Water was delivered as usual (rather promptly), two people were attentive to my needs: the host and my server, and I have the Thai Room all to myself. To my surprise, (although I really shouldn’t have been since the tables were low) my server drops to his knees to take my order. This makes me feel uncomfortable because I am really just looking for some good food. At this point I think I probably would have felt more comfortable with a date or with another person. I almost feel like a deity, something of the royal sort and it almost feels wrong. I am asked if I need some time to look over the menu but I already singled out the Thai Iced Tea way beforehand. I always order Pad Thai whenever I go to a Thai restaurant but to my dismay, shrimp, which I am accustomed to having, was an extra four bucks. I proceed as usual, “I’ll have the Pad Thai and Thai Iced Tea please” again with the wry forced smile.<br> + Alas, minutes after I order, my Thai Iced Tea finally arrives; glowing in its amber hue, the tea and milk still separated is the familiar presentation. Its presentation is beautiful and well executed in the classical sense, including the tall, cleanly presented glass it came in, which is also what it is usually presented in worldwide (in Thailand, it’s served over crushed ice in a translucent plastic bag). After my first sip of the top I ruled out condensed, coconut, and evaporated milk, which left only cream and whole milk as an option. After several minutes however, tastes become difficult to discern because of the amount of ice that diluted it, and shortly thereafter, it quickly began to have that dreaded taste of diet. I found it slightly difficult to drink to be honest, and I am not one to usually be particularly picky with my food. It wasn’t that I had high hopes for a spectacular tea, but that I wanted the tea to redeem itself from wiki reviews. But for all its worth ($3.25), you are entitled to as much as you can drink. After my second refill, lovebirds should take note that it becomes difficult to sit (and breathe) Indian style…maybe take less bites of your food. The Thai Iced tea at Sophia’s is not spectacular, or something you go to Sophia’s for alone (sorta like I did). Instead, you should go there for a chance to spend time with an old acquaintance, a lover, or a classmate for the purpose of conversation. Grab the tea anyways, it’ll guarantee you something to do. I will certainly be back with a date and maybe not during lunch. If you are a party of one for lunch or dinner however, I recommend Davis Noodle City, which is right next door.<br> + <br> + --["Users/Enders"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Sophia's Thai Kitchenhttp://daviswiki.org/Sophia%27s_Thai_Kitchen2009-07-24 01:43:57sm0729Comment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Sophia's Thai Kitchen<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 181: </td> <td> Line 181: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2009-07-24 02:43:57 nbsp It's all about the Thai Fried Rice and peanut sauce, baby!! --["Users/sm0729"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Sophia's Thai Kitchenhttp://daviswiki.org/Sophia%27s_Thai_Kitchen2009-07-22 20:59:46MichVanComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Sophia's Thai Kitchen<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 179: </td> <td> Line 179: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2009-07-22 21:59:46 nbsp The serving was quite fancy. They may not be spectacular, but they are very solid. The prices are all mid-range (i.e. not cheap, but not absurd either), and I have yet to have something bad there. The portions have always been a bit on the small side for the price, so I generally don't get to take leftovers home, but that's not terrible. I prefer to go here for Thai in Davis, but as others have said, there really isn't a bad Thai place in Davis. I didn't expect anything to come of my recommendation, but this time I was pleasantly surprised: this dish was actually hot. I would even say the piquancy level was "just right." Not only that, but the meal was quite satisfying, overall. The sauce may have been "inauthentic," uncomplicated, and a tad over-sweet, but it nevertheless complemented the seafood quite well, especially the crab. I can assure you, we would have NEVER sent her on her way alone, particularly in her condition. We kick out drunk people all the time, but we ALWAYS make sure they are not a danger to themselves or others when they leave. It would be irresponsible and illegal not to do so, as Dram Shop laws hold us accountable for people injured coming from our establishment. We always make sure that the individual's friend/party is notified. If they are alone, we call a cab and send them home at our expense. This would've been the case had you or your friend's boyfriend not been present to take care of her. Yes, there are always ways we could execute things more professionally, but kicking out drunk people can be a sensitive matter and we don't always nail it exactly right. However, I don't even remember what I did yesterday let alone what I said to an anonymous WikiZen with whom I'm on a first name basis. Actually, the gas price thing is technically true, just a gross over-simplification of the inflation process. So perhaps my erroneous statement was born more out of laziness than me being a moron, or perhaps a combination of the two. In any case, I shall explain (read: defensively justify) the price increase for wiki posterity:<br> - <br> - nbspnbspnbspnbspThe price of Guinness draft--not bottle--has been at $5 for over a year now. The importer of the brand increased the price of a keg by 20%, which triggered the increase. (Business 101: Cost increases 20%, Retail Price increases 20%) Except for Guinness, we have not raised the price of our draft beers or well drinks since we opened 5 years ago. Most of our competitors have. If you went on a Davis pub crawl (I'm down if you are!), I believe you will find our pricing fairly congruent with the current market, even cheaper than other establishments (keep in mind our prices are tax inclusive). Another factor in all pricing is customer perceived value. Most beer drinkers would perceive an import brand like Guinness and Newcastle to have a higher premium than, say, Sierra Nevada ($4 at Sophia's). It would be fair to say, then, that the market dictates a price for that perceived premium, and you see that in the pricing at grocery stores and bars alike (ergo, Sierra &lt; Guinness). This is why liquor and beer companies spend billions of dollars on marketing: to establish that premium. So saying that a bar is gouging you because you prefer to drink expensive imported Irish stouts that require special carbonation is like saying a car dealership is gouging you because you prefer to drive expensive German automobiles with leather everything that have hyphenated names on the trunk.<br> - <br> - nbspnbspnbspnbspMake no mistake: I do believe we are on the pricier side of things when it comes bars in this town. It even has a separate bar, with it's own exotic interior, and wooden deck for seating as well. I was there with my friends and co-workers hanging out for a few reasons, 1) Cara was leaving and we wanted to get her drunk and full to show our love, 2) It was also her birthday coming up, 3) An un-official reason, Kristin got a night semi-baby free, 4) Another un-official reason, we all were wanting some Thai food lovin' and to get a little bit mowed.<br> - <br> - The bar is known for it's live music, skilled bartenders, hot n' sexy wait staff, and dollar tequilla night (defining the quality of the tequilla, and inebreiated eagerness of the student population). Thus we were all more than happy to sample some of their drinks. We sat on the relaxing wooden bar patio for a while, people watching and chatting it up. Sophia's offers a wide range of beers, local and imported, so everyone was pretty darned happy.<br> - <br> - Appetizers like spring rolls, corn and shrimp fitters, and beef satay can be ordered at the bar as well (thai iced tea cannot). Each of the appetizers are a small meal in themselves and served with it's own unique sauces, providing an flavorful experience. The beef satay is well flavored with a perfect bit of spice and sweet peanut sauce, it has a taste of authenticity and Thai flare that goes perfect with beer. The thai springrolls with chili sauce also worked perfect with my cosmo, which was the best cosmo I ever had.<br> - <br> - We soon moved to the restaurant section (a different building across the patio) and luckilly due to knowing the hostess, got to the floor seating room. Here a lovely mural on all walls give a pleasant visual treat while you eat. We all placed our orders and made ourselves comfortable. Thai iced tea here is very flavorful, and proof God exists. It's also free refills, FREE REFILLS! Something other restaurants should learn to do.<br> - <br> - The food here is of good quality, and Davis residents laud over it constantly. However, in my own opinion, you can find better. Each dish seems to rely to much on lime, cilantro, and galangal. The curries, while flavorful, are a slight bit bland on the spice, but sweet and savoury and will definetly please you.<br> - <br> - Almost all of the dishes give you the option of adding chicken, tofu, beef, or shrimp. The Pad Thai is often bland and lifeless, a mound of noodles and peanut sauce, guaranteed to leave you disappointed. The Chicken Laap I had was a perfect toss of chicken and red onions, and exploding with lime, cilantro, and spices. It's bold and strong, and won't leave you disappointed. The glass noodles with steamed tofu, a perfect vegetarian dish, was warm with citrus and cilantro, and a cool relaxing texture, and not boring like one would expect.<br> - <br> - The whole restaurant and bar was also very baby friendly (it was 5:30 at the bar, no worries), and little Audrey for the short amount of time she was there before the mommy trade occurred, was happy and the staff were more than accommodating.<br> - <br> - Would I come again? The food here is tasty and of high quality. Particularly, the meats and produce taste fresh (not frozen/bulk) and their curries are lighter than your usual Thai fare. The waits here are ridiculously long, too long in fact (I try to avoid Fridays), which I guess is not unwarranted and attests to a satisfied clientele. The vibe in the bar is great: there's no particular "scene" and the crowd is perhaps the most eclectic you'll find among any of the bars in town. The liquor selection is extensive and varied, especially if you like Scotches and Whiskeys and the bartenders are the most skilled in Davis. (though avoid the tall one on busy nights; he can be extremely rude. Very friendly and professional staff otherwise, right down to the bouncers.) I also appreciate that they have live music. I agree you should avoid ordering the tofu satay. It is not really satay, as they didn't brush it with coconut milk &amp; curry. It is just plain tofu, &amp; it wasn't good steamed or fried (no 'lil cucumber salad to accompany it either which usually comes with tofu satay). We were advised that the curries cannot be made vegan, but they did make a ve<span>gan ve</span>rsion of the Spicy Eggplant stir fry for us which was a delicious alternative. Sophia's Thai Kitchen has a lovely ambiance whether it's sitting inside, our outside mild evening. The service is super friendly, and we got our food amazingly quick. I came here with my dad and ordered Red Curry, Three Spice Fish, Pad Thai, and the garlic mushroom appetizer. The prices are all very fair and about the same as other locations, but the biggest waste of money and dissapointment was the garlic mushroom appetizer. You would think with a name like that you'd get grilled mushrooms or lightly fried mushrooms seasoned with garlic. Instead, it was $5.50 for a small bowl of mushroom soup. I had no problem paying for any of their other things, but that was the most ridiculous appetizer of all time. Their Pad Thai was mainly forgettable, it didn't produce any intricate flavors or have any kind of zing. The Red Curry was very delicious and tasty. The Three Spice Fish, although flavorful, was kind of cheap feeling. Normally, I have always had a great meal there, but everything went wrong with my experience yesterday. It started off with the hostess not writing down our pager number, so it took us forever to get seated. And then it turned out that that hostess was our server, which she did not greet us or take drink orders from us until we had been sitting there for quite a long time. By the time we got our food, it was almost time to head back to work. But my biggest problem, was that I had ordered a dish with fried tofu, because meat makes me sick and I'm a vegetarian, but I ended up with chicken in my dish. When I told her that it had chicken in it, and that this was not what I ordered, she acted as if it was and I finally got her to take it back, because I would NEVER order something with chicken. It was taking forever to get my meal out to me, and as I sat there watching my friends eat, while I had water, I had to finally just ask her to put my order in a to go box because I was already 20 min late to work. I finally got my order, and it was steamed tofu instead of fried. I don't like steamed tofu and would never order, so I asked to speak to a manager which she argued with me about and said there wasn't one on staff even though it was in the middle of the lunch rush. I didn't want to pay for my meal, because I have just waisted an hour and a half (of which I had to work over time to make up for the half hour she made me late) and I still didnt get the correct order. I went ahead and took it to go, because I was starving, but couldn't eat the steamed tofu, because I don't like it. My friend was kind of to pay for the 9 dollar bowl of coconut vegetable soup, that is just sitting in my fridge. I would like to get her money back and I can bring the food back if need be. Our server was very argumentive and apathetic to whole ordeal and your staff should be taught a lesson in customer service. I would have been happy if she would at least apologize for getting everything wrong, but instead she acted as if that was what I ordered and argued with me.<br> + --["Users/Miranda"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Sophia's Thai Kitchenhttp://daviswiki.org/Sophia%27s_Thai_Kitchen2008-01-10 03:36:57AprilAriesComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Sophia's Thai Kitchen<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 194: </td> <td> Line 194: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2008-01-10 03:36:57 nbsp Although Thai food is my favorite, we have only eaten at Sophia's so far since moving to Davis. (And we have been back many, many times now). We were so pleased they could make the Pad Thai vegan by leaving the fish sauce &amp; eggs out. They even asked if we preferred our tofu steamed instead of going into the fryer. I always add the sweet-spicy sauce to the Pad Thai to add some moisture &amp; kick to the noodles. We were advised that the curries cannot be made vegan, but they did make a vegan version of the Spicy Eggplant stir fry for us which was a delicious alternative. Another time I had the Coconut Vegetable Soup with tofu, &amp; they were able to hold the fish sauce-- also excellent. Both dishes came with a huge portion of jasmine rice on the side for no extra charge. Skip the Pad Kee Mao. It is normally one of my favs, but their version has no kick or flavor. My sweet-spicy sauce couldn't even save the dish. The waitress saw we weren't able to eat it &amp; comped it for us, a very nice gesture.<br> + Now, the bar at Sophia's is my favorite in town. I am aiming to try out most of their specialty martinis, as every one that I've had has been yummy. Their mango mojitos are the best. If a "Thai" restaurant is really Thai, they would know how to make the most simple THAI food of all-- PAPAYA SALAD! Papaya Salad is NOT a tossed salad, but it's suppose to be pounded together in a mortar and pestal thing. Not only that, where the hell is the shrimp paste flavor and tamarind??? WORST papaya salad I've ever tasted from a Thai restaurant. It was like shredded cucumbers with a splash of bad quality fish sauce and lime.
