I suggest the vegetarian #8, made with fried rice noodles and tofu. mmm... delishskus. - Users/GriffinWalker

I was really disappointed with this place. We won't be going back. Both of my friend's soups were horrible. One had just bones instead of duck. My chicken and eggroles dish wasn't good either. Someone ordered an avocado milkshake which was obviously made from powder. It's just typical massproduced crappy Vietnamese food. blech. - JackHaskel

I'd agree on the Sandwiches, not Entrees sentiment. I had a tofu dish with kinda putrid tofu, once. The sandwiches are great, though. At 3-4 bucks, they're really cheap. They remind me a lot of my last visit to Vietnam. For great pho, check out Hoa Viet - EricNguyen

I believe this is the one on G street. The sandwiches aren't bad, much better than the ones at Fluffy Donuts - MarieHuynh

Yeah, this isn't a place to get entrees. It's a place to get sandwiches. And they're cheap, too. - jr

the sandwiches are much smaller than the picture suggest, you might need 2 to fill you up. overall i thought this place was going to be a really good deal but it just ended up being ok. not nearlly as good as the places i have tried outside of davis. MattHh

Only worthwhile if you decide to get a sandwich to go. - StevenWong

I also recommend sandwich #8, especially if you're a vegetarian like me! It's good, fairly cheap ($2.42 INCLUDING tax) and pretty filling (I disagree about the 'not being filling' comment above). - YawenChen

The BBQ pork, the vegetarian, and the fish are all very good. The pork skin one has ingredients that are far too chewy for a sandwich. Be prepared to wait a few minutes— the bread needs some time to toast. The contents of the sandwiches have gotten progressively smaller since they started serving them. Also, they now take forever to make them, especially at lunch time. There's something seriously wrong when a $2.25 lunch takes more than twenty minutes to prepare. —CraigBrozinsky

I was the one that had bones instead of meat in my pho (from JackHaskel's comment above). I guess the sun doesn't rise or set on this restaurant. Does anyone find the green things popping out from behind the sandwich pictures a little scary? — RobertBaron
2005-06-17 14:51:24 I love the sandwiches, with their price. Their fried rice is also really good. I almost always just go for the sandwiches, though. —GiladGurantz
Reasonable prices, good food, (especially the UN-fried glass noodle spring rolls.) Friendly management/servers.
2005-07-06 18:42:09 I love this place! The only place you can find a decent Durian anything! and they always smile and are very friendly, even though their English is minimal, but the food, (especially the pork sandwich! yum!) is all around pretty good —StevoDragun
2005-07-21 20:41:43 I got the BBQ pork Sandwhich from here and it was delicious. Not only was it delicious, but It set me back $2.42. Thats possibly the best deal in town. I cant wait to get back in there and try the other sandwiches. —MikeKuwa
2005-08-25 18:26:30 The sandwiches and shakes get my highest recommendation for value in Davis. I've had a couple entrees, and both were mediocre, so since then, I've stuck to sandwiches. It's about as good as deal from a price:bulk standpoint as the daily special at Subway, but much tastier and better service. Order two if you're really hungry; you're still outta there for less than $5. —RickEle
2005-10-03 13:05:40 The sandwiches, as everyone else has said, are brilliant. They're a little more expensive than some places but at $2.25 can you really complain? And the ingredients in Sunrise's sandwiches are of noticeable quality so I'm willing to pay the extra half dollar. They sometimes take a while to make if you order them to go but when they come out, the owners are always friendly and helpful and the food is always spot on. It took me forever to realize what kind of sauce they put in the sandwiches... I think it's mayonnaise but it's almost shocking that mayonnaise can taste that damn good. Good stuff! —LiRic
2006-02-20 14:51:43 I <3 this place. I got a rice dish and it filled me up. And the lady who serves is super super nice. I got prompt service. Food was delicious. —JoAnnaRich
2006-04-25 17:07:16 The steamed pork sandwich beats out the one at HL Bakery because of the pate smeared in the crusty bread roll, which is smaller than HL's and doesn't overpower the filling. The durian shake ($3) was obviously made with ready-made durian paste rather than durian puree. I guess I can't expect too much- I'm impressed just by the fact that there is durian-anything in this town. For $5 I was full to the brim! —JennaChan
2006-05-31 03:58:40 Definitely get the sandwiches! The vegetarian had particularly good tofu...also, I like asking for extra cilantro. And it's cheap! While you're eating it, banh mi seems to almost justify the French occupation of Viet Nam. Then you feel horrible guilt for this thought. —AlyssaOlenberg
2006-06-24 19:54:09 I've eaten here a few times, and the food is pretty average overall. I tried the sandwiches tonight for the first time — the BBQ pork was really quite good (especially for the price). I also tried the regular steamed pork, and was rather disappointed with it. "Rice Noodles" in Sacramento is better, but it's also far, so I'll keep coming back here when I'm craving Vietnamese food. —AlexPomeranz
2006-06-29 14:13:27 we got fish and tofu in the veggie sandwhich. also the whole thing tasted like fish. disgusting. —EricRedpath
"2006-07-18 16:14:43" I personally though that nothing could meet the horrid conditions that 2K Thai subjected me to. But, wow, just when you think you hit the bottom, someone throws you a shovel.
The shovel was provided by Sunrise Restaurant in Davis. This was just wrong. My mouth was violated. My back destroyed. My patience shattered. So for all this, I won't give you a review of the dishes, that would be like vividly describing the clubbing of a baby seal to a child. You would end up shedding tears for me. Let's just sum up some of the finer points:
-All three (I was dining with two others) dishes were delivered five to fifteen minutes apart from each other.
-Roaches, flies, and something else that escaped under the bench. Probably the secret ingredients.
-The benches and chairs are actually Vietnamese prison furniture, meant to warp your butt and spine into biological devices of pain you can take home with you.
-Food either possessed no taste, or was just all out disgusting. This is what evil tastes like.
-The Tapioca Tea tasted like sorrow on that note. Yep, sorrow and evil.
-Customers not wearing their shirt inside a restaurant is okay at the beach or lake. Not in the middle of downtown, in the entryway.
-The wait staff skirted us around like we were freakin' five years old, then seemed upset that we weren't aware we were supposed to seat ourselves at a very specific table he wanted us at when the whole place was freakin' empty.
The only okay point was the avocado milkshake, but can you really botch up avocado ice cream and milk in a blender?
Save yourself that scenic tour of Hell's second circle. Eat here instead.
(Note: We had entree's, not sandwiches. Can't say anything about those, but I don't see myself going back to try.—ProtoGarrett
2006-07-29 23:10:37 a perfecto summer's evening 'n super charming tunes to boot! upon my first sunrise restaurant venture i ordered the #8 vegetarian sandwich and haven't stopped thinking about it since! ooh, and i advise sweet tooth coffee freaks like me to try the $2.42 "milk cafe" drink (w/o pearls) and save money on espresso until eternity...
-this coming from a meat eater by the way —Frenchie
2006-10-08 15:41:37 Great food, great atmosphere, great price. A must go —JasonKong
2006-10-09 16:38:16 So much better than Hoa Viet! Try their cheap sandwiches and their awesome noodle soups. I also like the spring rolls with peanut sauce. —KiwiSelina
2006-10-09 17:26:27 Service is really slow —DanielHoang
2006-12-20 23:05:10 I came here once to get a sandwich at lunch and it took 1 hour to order, eat, and pay. The eating and paying part only took 15 minutes so you can decide what took so long. I want the owners to be successful because y'know, fellow Vietnamese and all, but this place is just bad in terms of food, service and decor. —ThucNghiNguyen
2006-12-21 09:28:03 For everyone who thinks the service is slow, look at who's always there. I always see the same lady and guy (I'm assuming husband and wife) and a cook. I say relax and give them some credit for running a business 6 days a week on their own. —JoAnnaRich
2007-02-26 14:50:59 The sandwich is just so so. Huong Lan in sacramento makes much better sandwiches. the crushed rice dish is also below average. Not quite authentic vietnamese cuisine. —ChWong
2007-03-12 19:21:38 I really enjoy a place that sells 2 dollar sandwiches. I also tried this place for dinner and I was really overjoyed by the food. The night we were there it was really busy and the service was slow but there are only 3 people running the whole restaurant and they do a pretty good job with just having 3 people. The people are really nice and the prices are excellent for the kind of food you get. —BamCam
2007-05-02 20:49:38 This place looks like hell from the outside. It looks like hell from the inside. Plates often linger on tables long after their diners have left. And yet, the place has a nice "mom and pop" feel, and the food is surprisingly good. And inexpensive. We'll be back. —CovertProfessor
2007-05-02 23:21:16 sandwich is not lee's quality but closest thing youll get in davis —KaiWan
2007-05-15 14:35:28 are u serious..Lee's Sandwich is such ass quality —DonaldJaye
2007-07-16 21:31:07 I'm kind of disappointed, I was waiting 40 minutes for their sanwich and they still didn't make them. It was a specially busy night, and they seem to put their priorities on the expensive items that others bought, not the cheap sanwich. Very poor customer service —KiemVu
2007-07-16 21:35:31 The shakes alone make this place worth a visit. :) —WilliamLewis
2007-07-17 23:17:34 Went here tonight. The soup had so much oil in it that I did not finish my meal. The drink I ordered tasted fine. All things considered, I would not go here again. —JohnWong
2007-09-04 05:54:42 I ordered the duck soup over a year ago.....I think they gave me the pieces that the dog didn't want; all fat, no meat. It has been a year since the only time I have been there, and I have no plans on going back —DCWine
2007-09-13 16:41:19 I have been going here for sandwiches for about as long as they have been opened. The sandwiches were not bad, especially when there was nothing else around to compare to. Lately though, I think the quality is going downhill. I bought a sandwich there this morning (#3: ham & steam pork) and there was barely any meat in the sandwich, there was very little ham and there was only one small sliver of the steam pork which they used to hide some spam underneath (yes, it was spam!). I hate these types of business practices, I would rather they raise the price and keep the quality up instead of skimping (and cheating) on the food and quality. If this is the direction Sunrise is going, then they just lost a customer. —AnHo
2007-09-23 13:07:52 I always get the best service and great food no matter what I order. The owners are really sweet and friendly. The ONLY place where I'd eat Vietnamese food in Davis. —UnhappyStudent
2007-10-12 23:08:17 Their sandwiches and bubble drinks are ok, cheap and ok. Their soup is absolutely horrible. You can't quite call it pho. There was roach on my table. The woman taking my order was trying to make me talk to the cook because I spoke Spanish and so does the cook. I won't return. —ingrid
2007-10-31 12:57:55 I love this place! The two owners are really nice. They are always smiling. Most always I order something from the vermicelli menu (#40s I think). It's always great. I love their spring rolls as well. I've never experienced a long wait here, and I have been to this restaurant a lot of times. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a bit weird because of the music, and also because you are surrounded by mirrors. Not recommended for a first date, but if you know the person you are going with well enough, you can just laugh at this a bit bizarre atmosphere. However, the friendly smiling owners and the food always make me want to go back to this place. —Beatriz
2007-11-29 21:01:44 Nice atmosphere, cheap and delicious food. The pearl drinks are better than the tea house in my opinion. The tapioca is better. Not a long wait either, so I highly recommend this place too. A few more points I noticed: *The large soup bowls are gigantic, I couldn't finish one alone.
*The chicken and shrimp used in their soups was fresh and tasty, and the sauce for the soups is great too
*Their wantons are ncie
*Their tapioca seems to vary in sweetness and consistency day to day
*Sometimes they forget to make a few changes to my order, but nothing really bad
*There may be a few less ingredients of a varying kind here and there, for example, my pho the other day didn't have beef in it even though it was the combination kind, but it was still good.
*The owners seem like honest, kind people, the type that you feel comfortable giving money to. —AnnaF
2007-12-19 19:27:56 I highly suggest the #60, vegetarian tofu noodle plate with the spring roll. At only $4.75, you can't go wrong. Nice proprietors, reasonable service, I recommend them. —thelonepiper555
