guad_2.jpgInside the north Davis location

Taqueria Guadalajara, also known as the Guad, is a restaurant that offers a tremendous variety of reasonably priced food. The menu is heavy with (but not exclusively) Mexican fare, from tacos and burritos to burgers. They have a wide variety of meats including fish and shrimp. A regular burrito is $4.45 and a super burrito is $5.45. Free chips and salsa are included with every order. Be forewarned, a sign on the door of the North Davis Guad reads: No Socks No Shoes No Dogs No Cats No Service. (That last bit is uncomfortably accurate, particularly during peak hours.) The Guad offers a savings card that's worthwhile if you eat there frequently. The South Davis location has an outdoor patio that's great for beer, glass bottles of coca-cola, and burritos.

There's something amazing about the guad's burritos. They're very tightly wrapped but full of so much goodness. Places like Chipotle tend to give you large burritos but at the expense of having something closer to a ball than a burrito. Guadalajara delivers tightly wrapped huge burritos.

Chips are free and plentiful, as is the delicious salsa. The guad is home to the Super Giant Burrito which is about the size of three burritos — it costs about $10. It is recommended that when going with a friend you purchase and share this burrito between two people. For the same price of buying two burritos, you each get an extra half of a burrito (not that anyone would actually need an extra half burrito).

Breakfast at Guadalajara is an excellent deal. Their breakfast burritos have egg and meat with a side of beans and rice. One burrito costs $1.99, it's $1 for each additional burrito. One is enough, two is plenty and three will darn near fill you up.

If you're planning just to get take out, it is wise to phone in an order ahead of time. Also, be careful when paying with plastic— they charge a convenience fee and have been known to add other unauthorized charges as well. If you get a coupon from these guys without an expiration date, use it quickly. They probably won't take it after two weeks.

The North Davis Guadalajara is within walking distance of the high school, so be careful about going there during lunch hours on a weekday — it will undoubtedly be swamped with high school kids who have taken the sophomore walk

Note to Vegetarians: they use chicken in the preparation of their rice, so their "Vegetarian burrito" isn't vegetarian. This would also render the Chile Relleno burrito, a secret menu item, not vegetarian either.

``I recommend the pastor. It's good in burritos and tacos, or on a tostada. The nachos look apocalyptically good, but I haven't tried those. Their horchata's delicious, though perhaps a shade too cinnamony.`` -ct

``This place has the best burritos in davis (better than Chipotle). Be sure to get a Super Burrito, not a regular Burrito (Super Burritos are way better, even if you don't like sour cream, I reccomend a chicken or steak one). The Pico de Gallo salsa here is the best I've had anywhere. Unfortunately, they don't salt the chips. But, chips and salsa are free. My friends and I have tried almost everything on the menu and I've never heard a complaint.`` -JacobOrenberg

2005-02-13 22:36:25   totally overrated —RishiTrivedi——
2005-02-22 11:28:47   I was never terribly impressed with the one by Albertson's, but the one by Nugget is great! The chips are *way* fresher and the food just seems to be prepared with more care. Try the one in El Macero before you write off Guadalajara! —AlphaDog

2005-03-20 22:10:17   carnitas quesodilla is definately worth a try. —AshleyOrsaba

2005-03-20 22:18:10   Dos is better. —GeorgeLewis

2005-03-20 23:11:27   Guad sells burgers??? —JackHaskel

2005-03-21 09:56:32   Dos is just different. —JimSchwab

2005-04-18 02:37:28   Best burrito in Davis, hands down. —HeatherKlinger

2005-04-18 08:22:18   Best burritos in Davis, except for Dos that is. —GeorgeLewis

2005-04-18 21:00:08   Taqueria Super Tamale on Lake is better than both. Plus they offer Coronitas buckets for $6. Autentico, bue. —DanielMedinaCleghorn

2005-04-26 02:54:35   Keep the stub if you pay with a credit card. They add about a $1.25 screw you bonus for students. —LoydWilliams

2005-04-26 16:03:44   What do you mean Loyd? They charge $1.25 extra for credit card purchases? Why keep the stub? —JackHaskel

2005-06-17 04:39:23   Best Burritos in Davis Hands Down. I love Mariachi's but sometimes it just doesn't hit the spot. Taqueria Super Tamale is a bit on the expensive side and so incredibly far away from most students. The others (I haven't tried Taqueria Davis) aren't even worth a mention. The breakfast is a great value. Make sure you try the burritos with a more exotic type of meet such as Lengua (tongue), the meat is so tender it just sort of melts. —AlvinTsao

2005-07-07 18:38:06   If you are actually from Davis, you do not call it that repulsive name "the Guad." It is "Taqueria". If you call it "Guad" you will label yourself an outsider. —JacobRoche

2005-07-08 09:41:30   It's pretty weird my friends call it Guadalajara, not sure where they got that name from. —JimSchwab

2005-07-21 20:41:43   GUAD has the best burrito I think I have ever had in my life. I think I have eaten about one hundred of them easily maybe even up in the one-fifty region. Thats a lot of Burrito. If youre a hardcore burrito fan you eat at GUAD not Dos or Chipotle. If anyone even says Chipotle they should be banned from commenting.

2005-08-13 11:19:27   Order your burritos wet. They're much better that way. —AlexPomeranz

2005-08-26 21:56:51   The tacos al pastor are great. —CarlMcCabe

2005-08-27 00:01:51   Heh, I had some executives to a business dinner at this place once. —ScottRitchie

They add about a $1.25 screw you bonus for students. —LoydWilliams

They've charged a few dollars extra to my room mate's credit card and mine. MichaelGiardina

They screwed me out of 3 dollars like this once, so make sure to cross out the blank lines; if they didn't have such damn good burritos, they'd lose my business over this. EricLambden

2005-10-14 13:21:13   There's also a Guadalajara in Woodland (or at least it used to be — at one time it had a sign that said Gualajara, but now it only says Taqueria). It's in the shopping plaza with the Dollar Tree and Kragen auto parts, near the travel agency. The menu is pretty much identical to the Davis Guadalajara's. However, I just stopped in today and that particular location raised their prices to $6.99 for a super burrito, so they're now a lot more expensive. —AlexPomeranz

2005-12-04 03:48:28   coming from santa cruz, I have to say that there really are no good mexican places in Davis. That said, I haven't yet tried Chuys in Winters. The best tacos here I've had are from trucks in Woodland. The Guad, is like totally bad and tasteless. Their salsa is boring and bland. The worst taqueria in santa cruz is like 10 notches above this place. I guess if your used to Chipotle this tastes good. If you are ever in santa cruz check out tacos morenos and that will give you some idea of where the bar is. Speaking of over charged credit cards.....The location on Covel employs people that are just really lame and rude. I guess they are tired of all the drunk students that come in and are confused by their expansive menu, but really this is no excuse. Boycott this place!!! One last thought.....The Guad is a perfect example of quantity over quality.....kind of like how Del taco boasts that the macho combo is over 1 lb. Supersize me anyone??? —DudeNude

2005-12-04 14:21:31   Simply put, a person looking for good Mexican food, will not find it in this place. To be perfectly honest, it doesn't seem like Davis has a large latino population, nor does the school either, so it would make sense that the mexican food sucks. Plus, I agree with DudeNude, this place sucks. I know a place back home where u can get 7 or 8 tacos for 69 cents and the horchata is free. Plus, like DudeNude says u just courteously ask and they will show u the bar and what real tequila looks like. —MikeMele

2005-12-06 01:19:51   Yes! Thank you Mike for I was begining to think I was the only person that had ever had real mexican food in this town. Another thought; When I get pasta, I don't judge the place based on how many noodles they give me, I evaluate the tastiness of the dish based largely upon the sauce. Places like the Guad think that they can stuff you with rice and beans and you will be happy. What about the flavor?? Honestly, rice and beans are cheap.....do you think you are getting a great deal because they overstuff their tasteless burritos with rice and beans??? —DudeNude

2005-12-06 08:03:43   Yes I do actually. I don't go to guad for an exquisite dining experience. I go to get full for cheap. —KenjiYamada

2005-12-06 09:28:53   Yay! More pointless Authenticity discussion. —JackHaskel

2005-12-06 15:28:56   That's the point Kenji. Rice and beans are cheap! you think the Guad is a good deal but it isn't. do the math! —DudeNude

2005-12-07 23:45:57   Tacos Al Pastor y Dorados. There is none higher. The al pastor crispy tacos from Guadalajara are the perfect blend of flavor, spice, and grease. Perfect, just perfect. The base tacos are good. The basic burritos, however, are missing something. They are very "layered" i.e. one bite is rice, one bite is bean, one bite is meat. For Tacos Dorado though, this place is where it's at. —ChrisLambertus

2005-12-08 06:56:59   Chris, I challenge you to a taco crawl....from your review Im guessing the last taco you had was a soft taco at taco bell —DudeNude

2005-12-21 04:41:07   I think this place is OK. But, I have to say, for a Mexican place, they're kind of overpriced. There's a place in Citrus Heights (suburb of Sacramento) called La Fiesta Taqueria (also a chain) that sells pretty close to the equivalent as Guad. The food isn't bad here, though. I don't really consider the employees all that nice, but they're efficient enough. They take your order and you get it pretty quickly. I'll usually eat in here and the experience is decent. I don't really return that often, though, because the experience itself is rather average, and I can eat average at home. —SaulSugarman

2005-12-21 20:15:22   "THE Guad"? I think not. Its just "Guad". =) —KarlaFung

2005-12-31 17:28:51   The food at the south davis location is definitely not as good as the north davis one. I've gotten stringy, dry meat from the s. davis one and it was disgusting. The north davis one is good but still not as good as taqueria davis (although the location is nicer). The chips from n. davis are greasy and unsalted, the salsa doesn't have much flavor :( —HaleaMeese

2006-02-06 11:05:12   I love this place. I have never been charged above the price of my meal, and I have eaten here consistantly for the 6 years I've lived in Davis. Their food is excellent - especially the fish burrito- and they are always friendly and in a hurry to get your food to you. Everything is yummy and reasonably priced. I'd recommed it to anyone. As for authenticity, they are making food from Guadalajara, so "authentic mexican" really depends on the region from which the culture/authenticity is derived. I have heard from reliable sources that the food here is similar to that in Guadalajara. —TiffanySnell

2006-02-06 14:11:49   Generally very good food. I especially love the Al Pastor burrito. If I had the metabolism (and the cash) to do it, I'd eat one of those every other day. The biggest problem I usually have here is finding a place to sit once I get my food. The place is really popular, and really packed. I've only ever been to the north Davis location, so so idea how the other one compares. —EricKlein

2006-02-12 09:58:20   I've gone here several times since this place is highly Wiki-rated. I found my burritos to be smaller than other taquerias, dry-ish, and pretty bland. The fish tacos were likewise small and bland. I don't understand why people rave about this place. YMMV. —SteveDavison

2006-02-14 15:18:40   Good for Davis. Bad for ANYWHERE else. I only eat mexican when I go home. —RyanLeverenz

2006-02-26 23:25:47   Went to the one in north Davis over the weekend, got a super burrito with chicken. Very, very good burrito, but I was disapointed by the 'wet' style- the enchilada sauce was way too tomato-y and not very good tasting (and, being an Oxnard native, I've tasted a lot of authentic tasty enchiladas and enchilada sauces). I also got a bunch of unedible fat-bone pieces. Otherwise, best burrito around, but I know not to try the enchiladas. —ChristyMarsden

2006-03-12 15:53:22   Satisfactory for the most part, but the consistency of the taste has been more variable. Have gone here on and off for the past 6 years. When we get a bad burrito, we stay away for a few months. A place where many students eat, as the food is generally affordable and inexpensive. Tends to be very busy in the evenings with difficulty finding a table; it's usually pretty dirty during that time and loud. Low ceilings give an even more cramped feeling. Haven't gone to South Davis, hopefully it's better. Overall good Mexican burritos. Dos has good "Southwestern" style burritos. Chipotle has the best "new age" burritos, they seem healthier with the McDonald's consistency of taste. —UsetheForce

2006-03-15 21:23:25   The nachos are really good, but everything at Guad is way too damn spicy. For anyone who has a blander palate, going to Guad is like DEATH... make sure you order things without salsa or guacamole if you want to save your tastebuds. Furthermore, the nachos are the only thing I can really stomach from here. Whatever, though, it's close to my apartment and satisfies my food cravings. —MargieHalloran

2006-04-04 10:35:58   I had two of their burritos yesterday. one for Lunch, one for Dinner. I couldn't finish the dinner one because i was still full from the Lunch one. I was just in a burrito mood. Oh i love burritos. and being a fatass. —JulienBiewerElstob

2006-04-10 01:44:19   with taqueria davis a hop, skip, and a jump away, there's really no excuse to be seen at guad...unless you're lost. —IanLumley

2006-07-28 18:09:16   I've never had a problem with the extra "convenience fee" or questionable business practices. —ClaytonRehmus

2006-07-28 18:17:04   when i was gone in the UK for two weeks, all I could think about on the plane ride home was a Spicy Pork Super burrito. It was the first thing i bought when i got back. I didnt even have any American Money on me, i had to use a credit card. good times. —JulienBiewerElstob

"2006-08-03 9:34:00"   This place is so nasty and greasy. I am Mexican-American and I have eaten Mexican food all of my life, and good Mexican food should not have so much lard in it. My mom used to do this, and fortunately, a doctor told her to cut back the lard (or eliminate it) from her food. She did this immediately for health reasons, but the food tastes so much better when it is not so damn greasy. I mean seriously, why is it when people think of good Mexican food, it has to be greasy crap? Some of my family members make the grossest Menudo, which is otherwise an AWESOME dish - but I think they just mess it up. My grandma, on the other hand, also watches the amount of fat/grease she puts in, and it tastes delicious! :) That woman sure knows how to make some good Menudo! —ArielaHaro

2006-08-21 21:20:58   I recently had their breakfast burrito meal. For under 4 bucks I got two small egg and chorizo burritos, rice, beans, and salad. Very tasty. —CameronMenezes

2006-10-20 16:04:08   BUrritos are goood, the fish tacos are extremely overpriced for something that is not even as good as RUBIOS fish tacos at 1/2 the price! —VietnameseStudentAssociation

2006-11-08 21:02:37   i like the chips and salsa bar. ive had better more authentic mexican in LA and the bayarea, but its good mexican for davis. wish their meat had a bit more flavor and their salsa to have more flavor instead of just adding salt or vinegar —AnnThiNguyen

2006-11-10 21:01:04   Since moving up here from San Diego, I've been looking for comparable horchata. Guadalajara's is the best in the Woodland/Davis area. El Mariachi is a distant second. —ErwinSena

2006-11-20 01:28:21   So highly overrated. If they actually had any flavor here, they'd have the right ingredients for a real taqueria —TheStomach

2006-11-20 13:57:31   I've no idea why you'd prefer Guadalajara's "from mix" Horchata to El Mariachi's which is real, in restaurant made, and many many times better. Having grown up around quite a few hispanic people, I've a feeling the San Diego mexican food experience is not as authentic as people claim. —ZacMorris

2007-01-07 12:28:44   this place isnt even good for davis. Their al pastor is actually better than a lot of places in davis, but thats sort of by default. I agree that the salsa is not that good, and the food in general is kind of bland. Their salsa and horchata makes this place worse on my list than mariachi. I actually think that the best mexican food i have found is Titas on the I5, exit 257, about 50 miles north of the grape vine. There are some comparable places in LA and el paisano taco truck is as close to good mexican as it gets for the places i have been to in northern california. —MattHh

2007-03-05 01:46:48   Davisites Call it super giant burrito land. What is this "quad" nonsense. These are seperate restaurants. The one in North Davis Albertsons is part of a chain of them that stretches to LA. —StevenDaubert

2007-03-08 18:53:26   Its is not part of a chain, its family owned they have two locations. There are probably a couple thousand places called Taqueria Guadalajara across the country. I think the place is tasty for Davis Mexican food, but have had much better in other cities —JarrettNoble

2007-03-25 13:10:44   Bought the super chicken burrito! Tried this place since its so popular. I have to say its a lot of food but the flavor is not that great. Overall decent place to just fill you up. —BrandonToo

2007-04-01 13:35:33   This place is pretty good, only 1 bad meal after a year of going there all the time (the new cook learned quickly too), and they have NEVER messed my order up... Once in a while they will have your food ready almost instantly, and the wait is not bad even when its really busy. Pretty damn good if you ask me... Most of their food is just "alright" to me, burrittos are pretty good, but their most AWESOME dish is the QUESADILLA SUIZA (and its best with carne asada)!!! PS: The correct terminology is "Guads" (plural) —GarrettGallegos

2007-04-23 17:47:12   My family is vegetarian and we ate here a few times as we saw that they list a "vegetarian" burrito on their menu, we came to find out however that the menu is wrong, and the rice that comes in the"Vegetariano (Vegetarian)" is made with chicken broth, which obviously isn't vegetarian!

We had verified a few times with the cashiers or waiters that we were vegetarian though it was clear that the people who took our orders had no idea if the burrito was actually vegetarian, but would generally say they were. . .it wasn't until one of them actually asked the chef that we found out that they used chicken in making the rice. Our dietary choices are very important to us and we feel that if the menu is going to say "vegetarian" then the product they sell should be as well.

As far as mexican food in Davis goes it's probably the best tasting there is, but we now frequent Dos Coyotes as they are honest about their ingredients and have changed their recipes to be vegetarian friendly.

P.S. Most people I know at the UC called it "Guads"

:-D —Brett

2007-04-30 17:36:33   Our family loves the South Davis Taqueria. Been eating there since they opened. You get a choice of beans with your order, alot of places only have black beans. Never had any trouble with being overcharged either.

Each Mexican restaurant in Davis is unique to themselves and all offer good food, we all just have different tastes.

2007-05-12 17:15:49   wow. i got the super burrito with steak and refried beans, one of the best burritos i have ever had, and i have had a lot of burritos. best burrito in davis, by far. (ate at North Davis location) —JeffKauf

2007-05-14 20:11:53   I do not recommend this place. I ordered the super giant burrito over the phone so i don't have to wait when I get there. I placed my order, she said it'll be ready in 10 minutes, so I got there in about 13 minutes to give them a little extra time. To my disappointment, she didn't give the order to the kitchen. She just remembered and grabbed the slip next to the register and asked me to verify my order again. Then I had to wait for them to make it, and the cashier forgets to give me my order until I ask her since I didn't get a number for my order. I agree that the burrito is big, but it's nothing special in terms of taste or quality. The service has gotten worse that's for sure! I know they're busy around dinner time, but that's not an excuse to forgot an order entirely then have me wait without even an apology. I won't be eating there again. —mikew

2007-05-18 12:19:38   THEY ACTUALLY HAVE 3 LOCATIONS. There is a Guad in woodland that is owned by the same family. There Super Burritos are a dollar more, but the inside has much of the same decor as the one in North Davis, and the food is great of course —AllanRae
