I had lunch with a friend today and found the service and food lacking. The cook seemed overwhelmed and took almost 45 minutes to prepare our food. Our server was an older white gentleman who was nice but inexperienced. The water in my pot of green tea was lukewarm, and he forgot the Thai iced tea that my friend ordered. It was the cook who noticed that we had run out of water and refilled our glasses. The restroom was clean, though the toilet lid had a large crack that was only partially covered by a cloth. The food itself is tasty, the servers are friendly; it was the following experience that has taken this restaurant off my list.<br> + <br> + The first negative was when my friend found a hair in her green curry. But we all agreed, hey, that happens. Then, during the same meal, my other friend found a piece of plastic in her mango chicken. Both of those things were forgivable (disregarding that they happened simultaneously, on a very slow evening). The final straw was today, when I heated up my leftovers: halfway through, I found an INSECT PART, probably the leg of a roach.<br> + <br> + Needless to say, that's just unacceptable. Anywhere. Davis seems to have a disproportionately large number of Thai restaurants so you probably have to be doing something right to survive. They're doing a lot right. When you're standing at the counter you can watch the kitchen and they always seem to be chopping up some fresh produce. You can see why in the picture of "Yum Duck" above. It seems pretty standard for their non curry dishes to feature a colorful array of fruits and veggies in an acidic dressing, served with whatever meat you chose. It's a safe place to get seafood and their GOONG SCALLOP KATIEM is particularly good. My favorite item here is the lamb kabob. It's the tenderest, juiciest lamb I've ever had and I love the two sauces it comes with. I don't normally like lamb, but when I do, I really like it. --["Users/MikeyCrews"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Thai Bistrohttp://daviswiki.org/Thai_Bistro2011-05-06 09:33:18JabberWokky <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Thai Bistro<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 29: </td> <td> Line 29: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> [[Image(YumDuck.jpg, noborder, "'''Yum Duck''': Duck meat with cilantro and green and red onions, tossed in a light sweet and vinegary dressing")]] </td> <td> <span>+</span> [[Image(YumDuck.jpg, noborder<span>, thumbnail, 300</span>, "'''Yum Duck''': Duck meat with cilantro and green and red onions, tossed in a light sweet and vinegary dressing")]] </td> </tr> </table> </div> Thai Bistrohttp://daviswiki.org/Thai_Bistro2011-05-06 09:33:02JabberWokkyUpload of image <a href="http://daviswiki.org/Thai_Bistro?action=Files&do=view&target=YumDuck.jpg">YumDuck.jpg</a>.Thai Bistrohttp://daviswiki.org/Thai_Bistro2011-05-06 09:32:43JabberWokky <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Thai Bistro<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 26: </td> <td> Line 26: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ <br> + =Dishes!=<br> + <br> + [[Image(YumDuck.jpg, noborder, "'''Yum Duck''': Duck meat with cilantro and green and red onions, tossed in a light sweet and vinegary dressing")]]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Thai Bistrohttp://daviswiki.org/Thai_Bistro2010-10-21 20:54:46jsg718Comment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Thai Bistro<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 79: </td> <td> Line 79: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + ''2010-10-21 20:54:46'' [[nbsp]] If you want flavor, avoid this place. We've fallen into a Thai Nakorn rut, so I tend to forget about Thai Bistro. But with Thai Nakorn on an extended summer holiday, we were motivated to come back and remember how pleasant it can be to sit out on the Bistro's patio when a breeze is blowing and there are no incompetent buskers about. This time I was particularly taken with the Panang Nuer, which was very different from other panangs I've had (more stew-like) and oh-so-flavorful. It wasn't hot (for you heat fanatics out there), but we didn't ask for hot. Service was prompt and friendly, as we've always experienced here. I think we'll just have to suck it up and eat Thai food more often so that we can frequent both Bistro and Nakorn. One caveat: We noticed a sign applying for a change in ownership. I'm not sure if that has already occurred yet or not. I was a regular at a thai place whose owners were relatively recent immigrants from thailand. I just got back from living in thailand for 6 months. I enjoy my thai food. I had an old belief that there was NO good thai food in davis, from eating at Sophias [which is horrible and should not be called thai food], and 2K thai which was a hit or miss. Eating at thai bistro for the first time tonight reversed this misconception.<br> + For a good price there is a LOT of good food to be had. I ordered pad thai, and the Pad 'J' which is a fried eggplant dish. While I dont think I would have been able to get the eggplant dish in thailand per se, the flavors are wonderful and authentic to what seasoning should be like. It comes with a wealth of egglant and green beans, and a side of rice. And the pad thai looks like what it's supposed to, not bright yellow or pink or all that nonsense- it's flavored well with a great amount of additional ingredients [tofu, shrimp, fried egg etc] really just like what I would get at a restaurant in thailand that specialized in pad thai.<br> + I know most people think "authentic?.. I don't know if that means its good." Well, it does. The food is not greasy but the noodles do not stick together, the food is wonderfully seasoned but not just salt and spice, this kind of stuff is what I look for in a thai restaurant. Pierre has been inherited from the old restaurant and he was MY friend! Anyway, I went there this weekend with my father and had some very good lamb kabobs. They were succulent and tender, not dry. My only qualm was that they were so tasty, I was left wanting more, even though I was full. The peanut sauce was standard fare, nothing spectacular, but not gross at all. The mint variety was better. My dad had some chicken that was a little dry for my tastes but I'm sure would satisfy white meat lovers. Service was friendly and helpful, despite the heavy accent. My iced coffee was also standard, but I love Thai iced coffee so I'll give it an air guitar solo. Total bill was around 30. A nice place to take someone for a sit down meal. I'll probably go back. --["Users/jefftolentino"]<br> - ------<br> - ''2007-08-26 15:35:54'' [[nbsp]] I could go on and on about this place, and I will. I've been frequenting this place for three years. The owners always fawn over our daughter and take her into the kitchen to visit the cooks. The food is outstanding, I have NEVER had a bad meal there, ever, and we go often. The place is so clean, it smells so good and the artwork is lovely. We've never had to wait for a table, our food comes out lightening fast and super fresh. If I had to choose one resteraunt in Davis to eat at for the rest of my life, it would be Thai Bistro. Sophia's Kitchen is a perfect example of Americanized Thai food. This place is probably the closest thing to "real" Thai food you can get in Davis. For all the people who come here and get horrible service, it happens, trust me, I've WORKED at Thai restaurants. Think about it: These cooks don't ever get a break, they work from when the restaurant opens to when it closes, how would you feel during lunch rush or dinner rush... Being a waitress, I pretty much feel like shiet during the lunch rush. Think about being a cook and being in front of a GAS stove, yes, they use GAS stoves... and cooking dishes from opening to closing time and not to mention standing the whole entire time. And the hair comment, stuff like that happens... just because it happened once, doesn't mean it'll happen again. This restaurant beats all the Thai resturants in Davis to a Thai person because most Thai restaurants serve all the common and popular dishes that American people eat. Rarely does a Thai resturant serve dishes that aren't with Americanized taste or dishes that American people won't eat. --["Users/Apartmenthunter"]<br> - ------<br> - ''2007-08-26 20:10:35'' [[nbsp]] and not having Thai curry, that comment is ridiculous because I know full well that they have it because I saw it on the menu. It would taste like how any American would make the dish. This is because they are trying to appeal to the Davis population which is primarily White. It always cracks me up when people say it tastes worse than another place in Davis because to a Thai person, it tastes the SAME. The only difference between Thai restaurants here seems to be what they offer as their specials and what's on the menu. Then again, certain things are ALWAYS going to be on the menu, like PAD THAI and CURRY and ICE TEA because its what Thai food is known for. It would taste like how any American would make the dish. This is because they are trying to appeal to the Davis population which is primarily White. If you head over to major cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, that's AUTHENTIC Thai food. It would taste different.<br> + <br> + Those of you saying the food is bland, take that into consideration. Its bland because the average population here likes it that way. They've been in business for a while so one would think they know what they are doing.<br> + <br> + You can't really get food made the authentic Thai way unless: 1)You're at a Thai person's house 2)If you're Thai, make it yourself 3)Go with a Thai person that speaks Thai FLUENTLY(That's the KEY word because speaking it isn't enough) and tells them to make it as if they were at home because they're homesick.<br> + <br> + If you like the way they make food, guess what the average Thai restaurant in this area makes food the same way. It always cracks me up when people say it tastes worse than another place in Davis because to a Thai person, it tastes the SAME. LOL unless you ask them to make it "Thai" then it tastes different because they're not following a bastardize recipe anymore, they make it taste as if they're cooking for their own child. The only difference between Thai restaurants here seems to be what they offer as their specials and what's on the menu. Then again, certain things are ALWAYS going to be on the menu, like PAD THAI and CURRY and ICE TEA because its what Thai food is known for.
