They associate to each page another page called {{{Talk:thepage}}}. The Talk page is a normal wiki page and is treated exactly as such. The only difference is that it is logically paired to the page in question. For Wikipedia, this is a really good idea. Wikipedia tries to offer all viewpoints on all issues, hense on charged/potentially charged topics they can have discussion and not have it infringe on the content page (they also have the ability to easily lock the page when the debate gets too heated.) However, I'm not sure that the Wikipedia style of content-discussion seperation is needed on Davis Wiki just yet. It would be very easy to add but for practical and philosophical reasons I don't see a need yet. We are not '''really''' trying to be neutral or an '''authority''' in the same sense wikipedia is -- we would like to have a bunch of accurate information and be a great resource, but the kind of strictness that follows Wikipedia would ruin a lot of what I hope we can have here. You can browse Wikipedia forever without knowing it's a wiki, and that's what they want. I'm not sure that's what we want at this point. (As for having it easily updated and support threaded discussions, I think that would further fragment the wiki idea? Or maybe not?) - ["PhilipNeustrom"]<br> - * I would agree with Philip on this. Too much talking about what goes into a page can create the impression of too much structure, which can be intimidating. I would much rather see all information about a particular item on the same page, including any discussions about the content itself. In the future, I might support an initially hidden "Discussion" area on each page, but I see that happening naturally if and when this eases the wiki process. Right now, I think it would do more harm than good. On a slightly different note, I wonder if anyone has any creative ideas regarding a real-time forum for talking to wiki users, whether it be as simple as an AIM chat room or something more sophisticated. - ["MikeIvanov"]<br> - * Real-time forum? I think this is a bad idea. If you're set on it, I'd make it an IRC channel and have a bot that tells you edits as they occurr. -- ["ChrisTakemura"]<br> - * I'd like to know why you think this is a bad idea. I love your idea of automatic edit updates; however, I think besides you, me, and Philip, barely anyone uses IRC, and an AIM bot would work just as well. - ["MikeIvanov"]<br> - * Skepticism. I think you're incorrect about the effect that these metapages would have -- They wouldn't contribute to an air of authority or strictness, but rather emphasize the wiki process, and ''encourage'' people to edit. The wikipedia is authoritative, but that's not a consequence of the ability to have per-page discussions. Now, it's currently possible to inline conversations, but that's a huge annoyance to the casual browser, and I'd really rather avoid it. That's totally inelegant.<br> - And, just in case anyone out there is saying, 'we'll burn that bridge when we come to it,' there've already been several situations in which I might have added something to a conversation, if there were some way of doing so without polluting the actual entry. One example is the EU][/Kemper/EUII issue. I still feel the building should be filed under the former, and there's no easy way to access the decision-making process that led to it being where it is at present. -- ["ChrisTakemura"]<br> - * I think this indicates the need for a survey of some sort to determine what the users will want. The place Philip and I are coming from is one of making an impression on the people who don't know ''anything'' about what a wiki is. So while we realize it may look ugly to have discussions interspersed(sp?) with content, I hope I'm not putting words in Philip's edit box when I say that we think this gets across the spirit of this wiki in a way that outweighs the value of the slick factor. While I try to figure out what went wrong with the previous sentence, my point is it looks messy, but it's more obvious what's going on. Again, I think we may want to poll the users about this. - ["MikeIvanov"]<br> - * ''The wikipedia is authoritative, but that's not a consequence of the ability to have per-page discussions.'' No, but the per-page discussions allow wikipedia to hide a lot. I don't think we're going for the same thing as wikipedia. Wikipedia has a clear goal and strives for professionalism. As per-IRC/bot matters, I am reminded of a funny quote: ''All cool projects have a cool IRC channel. All cool IRC channels have cool IRC bots. All cool IRC bots are hand coded. Spend all your time hand coding an IRC bot instead of working on the smegging project.'' You could have it decrease the font size by 2, and make it 80% grey and italics. Rather than worry about fights over what is commentary and what isn't, it could be used on a basis as seen fit, and basically voluntarily. It would be good for anything someone signs their name to, for example. -["JaimeRaba" jr]</span> </td> <td> <span>+ * See ["Talk Page debate"].</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 49: </td> <td> Line 40: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- * Is there no escape character? Oh man, did I just say a section on apartment complexes would be cool? I think I did. I know that would have come in handy when I was a freshman. Something like: name of complex, photo, type of apartments, address, size of complex, managment company etc. Idealy, we'd have enough users that everyone could add their own apartment complex and rate the management etc. - ["ArlenAbraham"]<br> - * The apartment thing is a good suggestion. I may soon be involved in a separate project devoted entirely to apartments in Davis, so if you have any faith in that coming to fruition, take that into account. - ["MikeIvanov" Mike Ivanov]<br> - * If ["AraAroyan"]'s apartment thing never blooms, then this would be a good idea, I think. Even something as simple as the names, location, and phone number of most of the apartment complexes in Davis would be a really good resource. When I was looking for a place my Freshman year the main problem I encountered was ''finding'' apartment complexes (then calling them, etc). As of now, there's only the maybe-we'll-publish-it-apartment-guide-thing. We should just grab that and just write down the phone numbers/etc of all the places. That'd be just as good for most people. - ["PhilipNeustrom"]<br> - * Make a wiki style guide. There are too many inconsistencies in the wiki. -- ["ArlenAbraham"]<br> - * So, now we have a sort of ["Wiki Style Guide"]. I'd like everyone to take a look and discuss changes. Some people have suggested we introduce a "neutral point of view policy" -- but I favor a somewhat different "policy": "common courtesy." Just be mindful of others. If you see something you think is too heated or biased, feel free to attribute it to the person who said it or make it more general "some say that.." This is how things work out naturally, anyway. - ["PhilipNeustrom"].<br> - * I sort of agree, although I would like to hear what inconsistencies you mean. But any style guidelines we give should be as simple as possible, never complicated. I think any reasonable way to do a writeup works for us. -- ["MikeIvanov"]<br> - * In what sense? As for page names/linking, I'll try to write something up tomorrow evening (when to make a page with one name as opposed to another, or if you should even bother worrying about it). Beyond that, what inconsistencies are there? -- ["PhilipNeustrom"]<br> - * At the Aggie we have a multi page style guide that keeps us consistant. For example, it's aways UC Davis on the first reference, never University of California, Davis. Afterwhich it's UCD. As far as thw wiki goes... well, defining place names for one. Like for halls, is it going to be Kerr Hall, or just Kerr? Or for proper nouns such as Quad, shoud it be The Quad or Quad. Put one space after periods. Also, making external links should have some sort of consistancy to it. As long as we set up an inital style guide, it will make itself as time progesses. -- ["ArlenAbraham"]</span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 32: </td> <td> Line 23: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- * Some sort of global link changing method could come in handy in the future. This sort of thing should be limited to the admin users, but if somone wanted to change all the links that said "coffee house" to "the coffee house" it would be time consuming to go through all the ones that said "coffee house" - ["ArlenAbraham"]<br> - * Why should it be limited? Just make it an atomic change, for ease of rollback.<br> - * We're not sure we want to do this just yet. It'd be an easy add, but there should hopefully not be a lot of pages floating out there that've been linked all over the place with a bad name. Hopefully name things would be resolved without much trouble soon after the page would be made. - ["PhilipNeustrom"]<br> - </span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 46: </td> <td> Line 33: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- * I'm not sure where to indent this to, but I really think an NPOV policy would be helpful because I'm already seeing cases where different people are going to want to edit an entry to reflect conflicting points of view. When you read a page that's clearly coming from one side of an issue or a biased point of view, and you want to add information but you don't share that existing bias, you get a weird effect of multiple voices in the same article. See ["Students for an Orwellian Society"] for an example of what I'm talking about. - ["KenjiYamada"]<br> - * I'm just worried this would have the affect of making us "lose our cool" in some situations where the ass really just needs to be called an ass. Maybe the "main" text ought to be as neutral as is realisitic, but then there can be side comments/text grouped together (and sort of labeled) expressing ''all'' possible viewpoints. I, for one, would like to write a lot more about the Orwellians (later, when I actually have my computer back) from a somewhat neutral point of view. It must be understood that the pages don't belong to any particular group or viewpoint, but should maybe serve as an outlit and information source on things. Outright heated comments are fine as long as they're attributed. If I look up something I'd like to see what everyone thinks, not just one viewpoint. When you actually talk to people about places or things you get a varying level of bias from them, and weigh it all together in your head to make an opinion. So, yes, bias is okay as long as it's clear, but no page should maintain any official position, really. I mean, really, the Orwellian page is really tiny and has hardly any information at all. I'd call that the bigger crime. Those are ''my'' thoughts. - ["PhilipNeustrom"]<br> - * I understand what you're going for, but in that case shouldn't all text be attributed? It seems to me that having no attribution implies that the text is from a neutral point of view as much as possible. Maybe Davis wiki should just be a network of discussion pages with no such thing as the "basic text" of an article as distinct from its talk page. - ["KenjiYamada"]<br> - * I think that solution is a bit extreme. I want to type more about this but I'll give Mike/others a chance to voice their opinions. Just remember that the way to fix these issues is to simply write something better. Also, I've got homework to do. - ["PhilipNeustrom"]<br> - * I see myself doing this as well, but when wikipages are young on this site, it seems most natural to express everything in terms of personal opinion, rather than objectively. I often will edit out my personal slant and re-insert it after my more 'objective' (seeming) text. I think there is a happy medium between comments on a page and a comments page. Right now the temptation is to move the comments into the body of the page to show what they're directly relevant to. The comments are awesome on some pages, but on others they seem to digress quite a lot. I think the best way to manage that is to have a comment-subsystem as a talk:pagename ... if you could dynamically distill the comment activity into a small [username / subject / first line] index on the primary entry, it will still permit short comments to be complete displayed, and longer ones to be clicked onto, without dominating the page. Just a thought. - ["JaimeRaba"]<br> - * We may consider adding support for this sometime in the future, if the content truly gets difficult to manage without it. But for now, the goal is simplicity and transparency for the first-time wiki user. And I think all the mixed voice stuff is great. If it's really all over the place, it's very easy to click "Edit" and make it neater. Some of the stuff is very subjective, and it shouldn't be forced into a neutral point of view just to appear neutral. Attributing everything, on the other hand, is unnecessary and would make the pages look ridiculous. I don't think there is reason or opportunity to be absolutist here. - ["MikeIvanov"]<br> - </span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 60: </td> <td> Line 40: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>-</span> ''2004-08-24 19:03:53'' [[nbsp]] Note: Davis from the Inside Out by William D.
