It's the only place I could even conceivably take my recent New Yorker houseguests with the confidence they'd both be impressed by the food and enjoy a level of ambiance they'd remember fondly. A terrific choice for intimate (date or non-date) meals - the staff is interactive and knowledgeable and friendly, but knows how to stay out of your space and allow you your coziness. The menu is reasonable (seasonal, organic) and seems to offer only what they can do extremely well - there's no fluff, there are no mediocre offerings. The scallops benedict is probably the best dish I've ever had in a restaurant. A little pricier than other restaurants in town, but you get what you pay for, and this is one place I plan to support at every available opportunity. It's a real restaurant for people who want a high-quality experience. Our experience there has always been exceptionally tasty and creatively prepared! We moved to Davis from San Francisco 3 years ago and find the food and service to be as satisfying as anything we experienced in SF. We especially appreciate being able to slow the pace and pair the wine so tightly to the wide variety of food options. It's a place to linger and savor. Their cheese choices are particularly exceptional. It's also great to know that they cater without the quality of food taking a dip. I've been to three events where they have provided the food and service and all have been terrific. The green cucumber and sweet corn gazpacho we just enjoyed (at a celebration at a neighborhood party last weekend) was absolutely delicious! My husband and I are supporters of Slowfood and all the elements of the Tucos menu seem to adhere to those great food values...fresh, local, organic, sustainably farmed and produced REAL food! We find Tucos to be far and away the best dining experience in Davis! --["Users/JacquelineClemens"]
- ------
- 2007-09-08 18:55:59 nbsp Tucos is great if you're looking for a nice meal, a good place to go on a date. The location next to the train can be a bit loud at times, although it bothered my partner and my dog more than it bothered me. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]
- ------
- 2007-10-13 16:10:41 nbsp When they asked if we wanted tap, bottled, or sparkling, my companion said "tap" without hesitation. He hadn't heard yet about how awful the Davis water is. I had heard, but I hadn't yet tried it. While we waited for them to bring us the tap water, I told him that it was likely to be terrible and that I was surprised that they would serve it to us. But, it was great! So, confused, I asked our server why the tap water tasted so good, and he said that it was reverse osmosis filtered. So, there you go. Feel free to order tap water.
-
- That was a surprisingly pleasant beginning to a wonderful meal. I agree with the Covert Professor that there's not much point in commenting on specific dishes as they will change, but everything we had was very good, and I wish we could have tried more. The service was very smooth and friendly. I had the sparkling flight, which was very good, but all together too sweet for my taste. They were out of one of them and replaced it with a Prosecco, so maybe too much Prosecco in the flight for me? The sparkling Shiraz was very interesting. Later, I put the (I think?) owner/manager guy in a difficult spot by requesting that he pair a red wine with a very spicy dish, and he did a great job. Although, I should have taken his advice and had a sweet white. (He suggested the Prosecco, and I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was Prosecco-d out.) OK, I have to comment on my salad because I see it's still on the menu, bacon, brie, and poached pear. Absolutely divine, and they did not skimp on the brie or the bacon. Probably the best salad I've ever had.
-
- We had to sit inside because the patio was full of people and their dogs ;-) so the train horn was just muted enough to lend an extra air of romance to the evening. --["Users/EvoDiva"]
- ------
- 2007-10-27 17:41:15 nbsp This place was recommended by a friend when we moved to davis 4 months ago. It's so nice to find a new place to like, and sad when you end up disappointed.
+
+ Our first visit was for lunch, and we were pleasantly surprised. After a vacation of mostly "corporate" (read flavorless) food, it was very nice to have something that had a taste to it. The crab melt sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich were tasty. The salad greens on the side could have used a little more dressing, but we didn't ask so I can't complain. And, the coffee was fantastic.
+
+ A week or two later, we decided to try dinner. The crab & cheese bruschetta had a nice flavor, but the bison burger had an interesting flavor, but the "bacon" on top had no taste at all. Apparently we were spoiled with the service at lunch because this time, even though there were only two other occupied tables, the server spent more time chatting with his buddies and ignoring us (whatever happened to "how is everything"?). Overall disappointing.
+
+ OK, lunch was good, so we went back for lunch the next day. We noticed plantains on the menu the last time, so we thought we'd try that. Sorry, the plantains are not ripe. OK, well that crab sandwich was good, let's have that. Sorry, we just sold the last one. On a Wednesday afternoon. At 1pm. The table next to us was equally disappointed at the lack of crab that day. We were starting to feel like we were in the Monty Python Cheese Shop sketch.
+
+ We opted to give the bison burger another chance. Just OK, again. Question: does a tomato and onion make it a "dinner item", because last night it was there and today it's not.
+
+ Also ordered the pulled pork sandwich again, and apparently they were running out of that, too, because you could barely find the pork. The waitress offered to bring us some more, but we had to leave. She did discount our check, which I thought was nice.
+
+ after one good experience out of three, we probably won't go back again, simply because for the price I expect consistent service and food. I began with a serving of the Cowgirl Creamery cheese "Red Hawk". This cheese, from a creamery in Point Reyes, is truly excellent. It's a hard find in Davis - even the Nugget doesn't carry it. It was served with spiced dried fruit and nuts, a subtle but good olive oil, and some Acme breads from the famous Bay Area bakery that began the California renaissance of artisan breads. Even with my bias aside for the excellent Pt. Reyes cheese, this starter was excellent.
+
+ Next, I had a dungeness crab crostini, with a melted cheese over it. This was good - I'm a crab lover - but not as good as it could be. I didn't catch the name of the cheese on the crostini but it was too overpowering. Good crab has a delicate flavor that is all too often crushed in dishes, leaving only a taste indistinguishable from lesser quality.
+
+ My entree was the bison stroganoff. The pasta was clearly fresh, likely made at Tucos. The bison itself was excellent - tender, flavorful, not overpowered by too creamy of a sauce. The dish highlighted the bison and fresh pasta, to good effect. However, for a $25 entree (and accounting for how expensive Bison could be) I would expect a little better presentation. The colors were monotonous; even the slightest bit of green from some fresh parsley (or, something more creative) would liven it up a bit.
+
+ What made this experience excellent were the wines. I recommended the wine flights - I went for the Old World flight. Two Italian wines, one French, and one Portuguese. All were good, the Portuguese my favorite - long, lingering finish, well-balanced, very viscous. I also has a 2007 Malbec from Mendoza (also recommended).
+
+ Overall: The wine and cheese experience was excellent, but the entrees lacked a certain 'pop' I would expect from the prices. All the chicken and beef are free range, and the produce is very fresh. I split the bison tenderloin and the the tuna Nicoise with my brother and both dishes were very good. I also had a taste of my aunts fish and chips, where the fish came wrapped in a delicious puff pastry. For drinks I had the cashew slushy which was quite tasty (comes from the fruit of the cashew and not the nut). But perhaps the best part was the cherry tart for desert, flaky, tart, sweet and hot topped with cold vanilla ice cream. There was a bit of an incident at the beginning where we made a reservation for 6 people, and they only had 5 chairs available for our table when we arrived. However, it appeared that the owner drove some place and picked up a chair from perhaps his home. Now thats resolving a situation. The service was great, attentive, but not overbearing. Granted, with the smaller portions, you would find it difficult to leave here full without spending at least 35 dollars a person.
+
+ That was a surprisingly pleasant beginning to a wonderful meal.
+
+ We had to sit inside because the patio was full of people and their dogs ;-) so the train horn was just muted enough to lend an extra air of romance to the evening. --["Users/EvoDiva"]

Tucos Wine Market and Cafehttp://daviswiki.org/Tucos_Wine_Market_and_Cafe2007-10-01 20:03:57CovertProfessorComment added.
Differences for Tucos Wine Market and Cafe

Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 108:

Line 108:

+ ------
+ 2007-10-01 21:03:57 nbsp We had a very nice meal here, and true to their word, they were dog-friendly, which is nice to find in an upscale restaurant. :-) Since they change their menu so often, there's probably no point in commenting on specific dishes, so I'll just say that we enjoyed the mix of flavors and the creative menu that tempts you to order too much because so much looks interesting.
