There are a bunch of computer labs all around campus. Some labs, like the ones in the MU, are managed by
CLM — meaning any UCD student can use them (they require a login/password). There are other labs that require you to be a member of a certain department or group, such as the ones in Kerr Hall.
These general computer labs are manned by Computer Room Consultants or "CRC"s and managed by IET -
Computer Lab Management(CLM).
CLM's labs are divided into three types of labs: Open Access (never have classes scheduled in them), Classroom Labs (classes are scheduled here, but the room is open to students when classes are not using them), and Media Labs (contain media equipment and software).
What labs are open right now?
There is a
list of open labs and how many seats are open.
Open Access Labs
-
177 Memorial Union lab - over by the ATMs and Quad Phone 1/Quad Phone 2. Open 'till 12AM. Has both Macs and PCs.
-
163 Shields - now all sit-down stations (10 min stations were removed) with four AV viewing stations.
-
182 Shields - new open access lab, as of Fall 2008, with 38 stations, both sit down and 10 min quick access stand up stations.
-
15 Olson print station - drop in 10 minute limit stations, usually used for quick printing. All stations are 'stand-up' stations, that is, no chairs.
-
75 Basement Hutchison - The middle room of the Hutch labs, containing both Macs and PCs.
-
1101 Hart - Through main entrance of Hart hall, hang a right!
For the updated hours, go on IET's website. The right panel will show you the hours

Classroom Labs
-
73 and 93 Hutch - The two classrooms that flank the middle open access room.
-
1102 Hart - pretty much always in use, but they have some media stuff the other labs don't have. Contains pretty and fast Apple G5s.
-
2020 and 2060 Sciences Laboratory Building- 41 Dell machines, located on the second floor of the building. To open 2060, CLM partnered with the College of Biological Sciences to outfit and mange the 37 seat computer room. While there may be an occasional class, 2060 SLB will primarily be open access.
-
1131 Meyer - Part of the Meyer Media lab, has lots of media software, but occasionally has classes.
-
241, 247, 27, 21, 1 Olson - 241 and 247 are always in use, while 27, 21 and 1 are sometimes open for open access. All of them have Apple Imacs.
Media Labs
-
Meyer Media Lab - 1154 Meyer Hall- Contains all sorts of fun stuff, including everything you need to do video editing, a sound room with a keyboard, a mic, and mixing equipment, scanners, and much, much more.
-
Media Distribution Lab - 1101 Hart - The main room of the Hart Computer Lab. Has services to check out videos and other things you're professors may require you to watch, along with the TVs and DVD players you need to watch them with. Also has 8 stand-up stations for quick use and 9 open access sit down stations for longer use.
An interesting historical note is that the sit-down computers in this room used to be restricted to .edu webpages, and if you were caught doing things to circumvent the rules, your account could be suspended and you could be referred to the SJA
Labs that require a (non-UCD normal) password
-
The Mathematical Sciences Building has a lab of Linux machines on the 2nd floor in room 2118. If you sign up for a math class you can get an account by going to
http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/comp/class-accts. If you're a math major you can ask for an account (even if you're not taking a class).
-
Kemper Hall (aka EU II) houses a few labs. Signing up for ECS classes will get you an account in the labs in the basement. EEC classes will get you an account for labs on the first floor and second floor. There is
a page showing if the machines are in use.
-
Physics and Geology has several labs. Need to be in a Geology course to use the Mac labs in the Geology area. The lab in Room 106 is a Linux lab. You can get an account for the Linux lab by inquiring at the Physics Office on the second floor of the building. You'll have to sign your life away in the the
PhysNet Computing Policy to get an account.
-
Informatics Center - Assorted GIS, Remote Sensing, Statistics and Bioinformatics software managed by
http://ic.ucdavis.edu/, Windows XP machines, door keycode and computer account and password change quarterly, open to students with a class in either room.
-
Academic Surge - Engineering (EEC?) labs along the middle corridor on the first floor.
Other Labs
-
Food Science Computer Lab - first floor of Cruess Hall. Public logon required (ie. it's on a piece of paper next the key board). No printer. Must consent to monitoring for "law enforcement and other purposes." please note ambiguity of "other."
-
Cowell Student Health Center waiting area has two E-macs you can use while you wait. Be sure to wash your hands after using the keyboard. No login, no printer.
-
The Language Learning Center in the Olson basement has a pretty well-appointed computer lab and a printer that you can use in a pinch, even though they say that it's for foreign-language papers only. No login required, not even a UCD campus login.
-
The Activites and Recreation Center - Cyber lounge on the first floor, installed with Linux web browsing only, no login required.
Note: Further info on the computer labs can be found in the
computer room guide Please update this page with that information if you have the time.
