UC DAVIS Farmers Market News
The East Quad Farmer’s Market is being rebranded as the UC Davis Farmers Market and will re-launch during Spring Quarter at a new location at the Silo Union. In addition to providing fresh produce from local farmers, plans are in the works to bring food options outside to the market to create a lunch time destination. Discussions with other campus groups are ongoing to bring other services and products to the market. The end result will be an exciting re-launch in Spring Quarter. As we prepare for the new and improved market, the East Quad Farmer’s Market will be discontinued for fall. Stay tuned for more information as the Spring Quarter gets closer.
The UC Davis Farmers Market is organized by
UC Stores and designed to promote student health as well as local and UCD food products. It is a seasonal on-campus extension of the Davis Farmers Market. It runs each Wednesday of fall and spring quarters from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm, weather permitting. For spring 2012, the UC Davis Farmers Market will run from April 4th- June 6th.
The UC Davis Farmers Market developed from a collaboration between a number of campus partners in an effort to increase access to fresh, local produce for busy UC Davis students, staff and faculty during fall and spring quarters. A 2011 survey of UC Davis students found that over 60% eat two or fewer servings of fruits and vegetables a day. The UC Davis Farmers Market offers an easy and convenient way for the UCD community to incorporate more nutrition-packed fruits and vegetables into their diet. UC Stores partners with Student Health Services' Health Education & Promotion, ASUCD Coffee House, ASUCD Environmental Policy and Planning Commission, Campus Recreation, Davis Farmers Market Association, Davis Food Co-op, and University Dining services to make this a possibility.
Every Wednesday morning the market occurs, Health Education & Promotion sends out a weekly email to members of a listserve to give a brief reminder of the date and time of the market. It also includes nutritional data on some of the produce available and quick, easy recipes. To sign up for this listserve managed by UC Stores, contact marobles@ucdavis.edu.
Voucher Program
Visit the Health Education & Promotion table at the UC Davis Farmers Market to win $1 vouchers for the market. These vouchers are sponsored by ASUCD's Environmental Policy and Planning Committee (EPPC).
In addition, students with UC Davis meal plans are able to cash in meals, or 'swipes', for vouchers to use at the market. With each swipe, students will receive vouchers for $2.50 toward shopping at the market. Swipes can be exchanged for UC Davis Farmers Market vouchers at the Dining Services table at the UC Davis Farmers Market. The voucher program is sponsored by UC Davis Dining Services.
Frequent Buyer Cards
The UC Davis Farmers Market is now distributing frequent buyer cards to its customers! Frequent buyer cards can be picked up at the Health Education and Promotion table during market hours. After shopping at the UC Davis Farmers Market, stop by the Health Education & Promotion table to get a stamp for your purchase. Once a card is filled with 5 stamps, customers can put their name and email address on the back of their card and turn it into the Health Education & Promotion table to enter into a drawing at the end of the quarter. The drawing is for a gift basket from the Davis Farmers Market.
