While sitting at bar, eating my pizza and drinking a beer, the woman next to me faints(I didn't know her)! As I looked over and realized it was not a result of drinking too much, and since I have medical training, I sprung in to action. This woman's boyfriend was there and together we were able to assist her to the door after she regained consciousness and was stable (he was taking her to the hospital). As we were walking out of Vito's, she faints again, but this time has a seizure and looses control of her bowels and now I'm covered in human feces (no, this is not what bothered me). Long story short, the ambulance comes, takes her away, and I'm covered from my waist down in feces. As I go to gather my things, I realize that, amidst the chaos, the server had taken my food and beer away. This was a simple mistake, since they didn't realize it was mine. Well, I quickly explain to the server what happened (still covered in feces) and that I'd just like to get some replacement slices to go and get home to clean up. The server then decides to do nothing to make this right! Ok, now I'm annoyed. So, I decide to go to the front counter and explain what happened, again. Yet again, I get the run-around for 5 minutes(feces dripping into my shoes at this point). Finally, I found the bouncer that was there for the whole thing, and still, he did nothing. By this point I'm pissed. Seriously? Is this the way a business should treat someone immediately after they've provided emergency medical assistance to one of their patrons? Way to go Vito's, you just lost at least one customer over a couple dollars worth of pizza! I know N.Y Pizza. N.Y. pizza is a friend of mine. Uncle Vito, you’re no N.Y. pizza.
-
- The pie looked pretty, with veggie toppings fresh and nicely arranged, but it was basically flavorless. The crust was overly floury ("dusty," if you know what I mean), the cheese also had no flavor, and the sauce was only marginally better. Even with red peppers and parmesan cheese, it was still barely edible. There are better places to go in Davis for pizza; if you want a slice to go, head to ["Village Bakery"]. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]
- ------
- 2009-01-15 18:28:26 nbsp I've been to this place on more than one occasion to watch a game, have a slice and beer for happy hour....a beer and a slice for $5 bucks is a pretty decent deal. The service is fantastic, both time I've been there the bartender has been more than willing to put a game or turn off the music and turn on the sound for the game. Little things like this make a big difference for a sports fan. You won't find a more frozen mug than this place, the foam that over runs the glass actually freezes to the glass itself....YUMMY!!! If you haven't seen it, they've painted a nice black and white mural on the outside, and designed the space so that the front of the seating area can be opened to the street. They have nice, big, red-cushioned booths. So, for look and feel, the place is nice. But the pizza is very, very mediocre. For just under five bucks, I got one slice of "combo" pizza - sausage, pepperoni, red onions, etc. The slice was large, the sausage in particular was good, but the crust was straight-up grocery store frozen pizza. Just terrible. The volume was like a dance club, but people were sitting around trying to talk to each other, so everyone was yelling over the music. Is it always like this? Uncle Vito's is not NY style as a result of the cardboard-esque crust. It's awful, I wish there were some way to regulate the use of geographical adjectives, Vito's is guilty of deceptive advertising. Just about every restaurant on E street is a better lunch option. I've had two types of pizza slices, the philly cheesesteak, and the fries. I'd only recommend the fries, but the fries next door at Hotdogger are far superior. --["Users/GreezySweezy"]
- * Dude, that's a pretty tough description of the pizza. I mean, it's not the best pizza I've ever had, but to say it's similar to microwave pizza is a bit of an exaggeration isn't it? I think it's pretty good. BTW: I'm from Philly and I refuse to order a cheesesteak from places that call it a "Philly Cheesesteak." Now, you may call me a snob about this, but there is a very specific set of properties that belong to a "Philly Cheesesteak" - NOT including they be made in Philly - and never have I found that that's the way the place makes them. Just call them "Cheesesteaks." There's nothing wrong with a friggin' cheesesteak. But that's what it is. A "Philly Cheesesteak" shares at a minimum the following qualities:
- * fresh bread similar to Amoroso's, and made fresh "that day."
- * three choices of cheese: provolone, american or whiz (but all must be offered)
- * sliced rib-eye or USDA choice top round western steer beef
- * grilled peppers and onions (offered, but you don't have to have them on your steak if you don't like them)
- * I guarantee you any place you order from that isn't in Philly or associated with a Philly Cheesesteak shop will not have all these. Usually, the problem is the bread or the steak. Restaurants like to use cheap steak and don't want to go through the trouble of getting fresh bread every day. I'm sorry if this is a rant, but I'm tired of places offering "Philly Cheesesteaks" and then people who have one coming up to me going "Dude, that sucked." Yeah, it sucked because you got one in Davis! --["Users/condemned2bfree"]
- ------
- 2009-04-10 05:56:00 nbsp I agree with you, and I prefer the whiz on my cheeseteaks. A good half of my family is from the city so I've had NYC pizza many times and while this is not up to New York standards, it's a good imitation. The crust struck me as slightly crispier than what I'd pick up off the street, and instead of easily folding in half, the crust snapped and became unwieldy to handle. The flavor overall was good but it wasn't nearly as robust as I'd like for this style. It's why I was excited to hear it was coming to Davis, even if I'm not there to enjoy it. Sounds like they definitely changed pricing to try to take advantage of the new locale. In Sacramento, cheese was $3 for a huge slice, $3.50 for a pepperoni. (Generously large slices...) They always had good specials too - last August, it was $2.50 a 'Skinny Dip' beer every Sunday. The pizza is an acceptable form of NY style. There's an oregano flavor, the pizza is 20" and foldable, I couldn't detect sugar in the sauce, and the crust is thin. The cheese pizza is decent, but not great, either as NY style or in general. The cheese isn't elastic enough, and the sauce has some kind of an unpleasant grainy quality to it. They told me there wasn't any parmesan or romano cheese in it, so I have no idea why the sauce was like that. The daily special today was caramelized onions, ricotta cheese, and mozzarella. The dominant flavor was overcooked onions, and the cheese didn't taste, I dunno, creamy enough. The crust on both had the right amount of moisture for Californians, but I personally prefer it a tad bit drier. The tip and edge were okay, but had they cooked it longer, they might avoid the flaccidness I noticed in the center of both slices. Price-wise they're reasonable. How about fresh basil leaves? I'll probably go back, the beer was pretty decent- $4 for a pint and the glass was so cold my beer started freezing. The slice itself was good sized, if I was super hungry I could eat 2, but 1 was just enough. Pizza Margherita is the historical antecedent of NY style pizza, but the two are really different. Italy has a mediterranean climate, so it's easier to have tomatoes and basil year round and cheap. NY gets pretty cold and the Neopolitan immigrants of the early 20th century made do with canned goods and dried spices. Even the mushrooms tend to be canned or at least marinated. And fresh mozzarella is way too expensive given the monstrous amounts put on NY pizza and the low price. It's more common now than when I grew up, but I consider that a gourmet thing. They do tend to have higher milk fat in their cheese. That and the olive oil on the slices make it greasier and really yummy. --["Users/CraigBrozinsky"]
-
- * That is a good point, Craig. I have been there a few times after the opening and I have always liked their wings and the thin crispy pizza. However, today I received my credit card statement and I was charged $1,800 on Oct 31. At first I thought it was another fraud, so I went to the restaurant and talked to the manager. The explanation was that their credit card machine wasn't functioning properly in the first 2 weeks of opening, so they had to enter each and every transaction by hands, and they made a "mistake" on my transaction (Entering a $18 purchase into a $1,800). Although they immediately refunded me all my money, I would appreciate it if the owner checks all the sales at the end of the day and correct any suspicious transactions instead of LETTING THE TRANSACTIONS GO THROUGH WITHOUT BRINGING IT TO ANY ATTENTION!!! It's $1,800, not $180, if I didn't check my statement they would have just pocket the money without saying a word. That is VERY UNACCEPTABLE. The first time I ate there was during the first week they were open. My husband and I stood in a long line and ordered a whole pepperoni pizza and the 3.95 pasano salad with ranch and vinaigrette both on the side. That time we had no expectations and the pizza was greasy in a pleasant way, hot and tasty- a perfect NY foldable crust. And yes, I also noticed the sauce was a tad sweet, but with the pepperoni, it was a nice touch. The salad was really flavorful, because the tomatoes that the put in it are actually a bruchetta mixture with garlic and such. So all in all, the first time was good enough to go back. The second time however, both the salad and the pizza pretty much sucked. This was last Friday night, a week and a half after the first time. We ordered this time the Sicilian style pizza, which was a whoppen 26 bucks! But we felt that it was justified to some degree owning to the prosciutto on it. We also ordered a Caesar salad to go. While we waited 30 minutes for our pizza (which was confusing because the pizzas themselves are already cooked with sauce and cheese and stacked on a rack), we sat in the bar and enjoyed a beer, which I must say was pretty fab, because the mugs were extremely cold, which is something I like and I also love that they have New Belgium's specialty beers- I ordered 2 Below- the winter amber ale, which is extremely tasty. We had ordered our pizza to go. So, we left and when we got home we dived right in. The 8.95 Caesar salad was the biggest rip off ever. It was one handful of lettuce, a sprinkle of Parmesan and a sprinkle of stale packaged croutons with a very small side of salad dressing. All in all, the salad was not worth more than 2.50- for it was much worse than the 3.95 pasano dinner salad we had before. The pizza was extremely bland this time, even though it had more topping. The cheese wasn't really melted, the sauce non-existent and the toppings were unimpressive and spread unevenly. So, my point is that Uncle Veto's is NOT good for take out or even after the first ten minutes. The special salads are a RIP OFF if you get them to go. My second experience was very disappointing, so much so that I am hesitant to ever go back. But technically, all the bars in Davis could allow minors to enter and remain until closing. --["Users/KevinWan"]
- ------
- 2008-12-02 15:06:34 nbsp The pizza is great here, expecially when they aren't busy as the pizza sees more oven time. I was a loyal woodstocks customer for many years, and I must say the pie at woodstocks is exceptional. However, Uncle Vito's offers a full bar and enormous slices of pizza. Woodstocks only serves slices after 8:00pm. Advantage Vito's. Vito's also has happy hour daily from 11-midnight, whereas Woodstock's only promo worth attending is pint night on Tues where you get to keep the pint glass. Overall, Uncle Vito's is a better choice for a date or to chill with buddies. --["Users/RichardNichols"]
- ------
- 2008-12-15 16:55:56 nbsp When I heard that a New York style pizza place from Sacramento was coming to Davis, I crossed my fingers, prayed to the gods, and hoped for Luigi's. But the general manager Donald was aggressive and extremely unprofessional. And I have no way of contacting the owner of the business, so here I am.
+ I used to frequent this restaurant with my friends, or any family that would come and visit Davis from out of town, but not anymore. My brother came in from out of town and we decided to grab a piece of pizza for lunch. When we walk in a younger girl bartender clocked off and left work but tells Donald that I had been in the business last week, and had left the business without paying. Which was a lie. He comes up to me and my brother and says aggressively that he will not serve me until "my buddy pays for the beer he walked out on last week". My brother is only 19 and had not been in the restaurant before then. He didn't bother to ask any questions or be polite in any way, he just started accusing my 19 year old brother of stealing beer. The bouncer was absolutely convinced that my driver's license was fake and made me sign a piece of paper to compare signatures, which I willingly complied with. Then he flat out told me that I didn't look like my picture and my signature was too different, and he was going to confiscate my ID to give to the Davis PD. I completely understand his legal obligation to do so, but the manner in which he conducted himself was completely unprofessional and out of line. He was literally yelling in my face "This is not you" and made me feel incredibly insulted. The other bouncer behaved much more professionally, and once my ID was given to him, he called the police and got everything sorted out and verified. I hope that Uncle Vito's fires the bouncer and invests in a UV light to check IDs instead of making their customers feel like felons, but even if that happens, I'm done with this place. I was quite a Vitos fan. I would swear by it and did not go to any other pizza place once it opened. I would love ordering their Calamari and one or two slices of cheese pizza (and a soda to go with it). Almost all the staff there knew me by name becuase I came in that much. However, near the end of 2009 they got rid of their great calamari. Around Febuary or March of this year, they changed their pizza slice recipe or somthing becuase it no longer tasted like cheese (or whatever it was before), now it tastes like bad tomato soup (overwhelming all the taste). I went there in March during march madness and was very disapointed. I haven't been back since, though I am tempted to try it again soon. But the last 3 times I've been there it has gotten worse and worse. The managers are unbelievably rude. You'd think they'd want people to come back, but the attitudes (especially the woman manager, whoever she is) are ridiculous. The food has gone downhill, and to top it off, they have a dress code involving no hats? WTF are they thinking? enough is enough, I will never go back to this dive bar again and It is now my mission to make sure none of my friends give them any business either. Looks pretty tasty... but I can't really say much about it, other than that I'd like to try it!
+
+ First, the beer: the selection is pretty mediocre. 10 or so beers on tap. One IPA (Inversion) and one Pale Ale (Rubicon's Monkey Knife Fight). Their picks really were not very good (aside from the Inversion). For instance, they have ["Sudwerk"]'s Hefeweizen... which might well be Sudwerk's worst beer, and certainly the worst hefe I've tasted. Why not go with a decent Hefe, and a decent Sudwerk beer (e.g. the Marzen)?
+
+ They serve their beer WAY too cold. You lose a lot of flavor when the beer is so cold. The big, thick, glass mugs are so cold that any head which spills over the side of the glass actually freezes solid. You also wind up with a layer of floating ice on the top of the beer because the glass freezes the beer inside. You also wind up with a huge amount of condensation before the glasses warm up at all. Seriously, guys... we're talking beer, not Barq's.
+
+ Second, the wings. I got a large order of the buffalo wings--$13.95, I believe--thinking it would be overkill. The manager (who was very friendly) said the large order was 2 lbs., or 16-20 pieces. Frankly, they were pretty unimpressive pieces. There was less meat on the 16-20 pieces (I didn't count them, but I would estimate around 15-16) than on a dozen wings at Sudwerk or The Grad. Others in my party ate 3 of the wings, which is about how many I usually share anywhere else. I left still feeling hungry after the remaining 13-17 wings and 2 pints of beer, which isn't a common experience with a large wing order anywhere else. The sauce was fine. Probably just Frank's and butter, with more butter than Frank's. Not that spicy, but reasonably tasty. The skin was very crispy, too, which I liked a lot.
+
+ On a side note, I worry about how much they serve people on a Friday afternoon. A middle aged gentleman at the bar struck up a conversation with me and, separately, with another person in my party, while we were up getting drinks at different times. He was pleasant, but clearly very intoxicated. He mentioned that he lives in Cordelia and spends X amount per month on gas--implying that he's probably driving home. My kids got chicken tenders, which were.....well, they were just chicken tenders - kinda hard to really screw that up. They enjoyed them, and that's a plus. Additionally, I had a small salad, which I thought was well priced for the size and flavorful.
+
+ My guess is that this place is just "hit or miss". Dining al-fresco, however, is the only way to go; and for a prime spot to dine, people watch, enjoy the pleasant weather, Vito's is in the mix.
