They objected to the comment referring to Davis as a small town, which in my mind is a poetic/cultural outlook description more than strict numbers, but to them meant "dinky" or small in numbers. The point was more about the location and proximal options than Davis itself. It was a minor addition, one I didn't really see it as worth debating, so I removed it. As a side point, it occurred to me that if a sizable university is in any location other than a major metropolis, the surrounding city is always a "University town", not a "University city". Something makes just about any municipality with a heavily influential student population a "town" rather than "city". It's probably similar to boat versus ship or house versus estate -- more than just size dictates the appropriate term. --["Users/JabberWokky"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Users/CovertProfessorhttp://daviswiki.org/Users/CovertProfessor2009-11-02 08:21:39CovertProfessorreply to IDoNotExist <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Users/CovertProfessor<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 1048: </td> <td> Line 1048: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ * Yes, interesting! Tough times are everywhere, oh one who is there but not there. :-( --["Users/CovertProfessor"]<br> - * It's not just California and it's not just recent. [http://www.the-scientist.com/2008/5/1/32/1/ Good, easy read] from the Scientist. I don't know about Dr. Professor here, but my focus has always been in the biosciences, and I worked at a biotech company in the bay area for a while before doing my PhD work. From the article, regarding NIH grants. ''In 1999, scientists submitted 8,957 applications for R01 grants classified as type 1, or new submissions (these figures include only original applications, not resubmissions). The agency awarded 1,761 applications, for a success rate of 19.7%. By 2005, the number of applications rose to 10,605, and only 970 were approved. That means only 9.1% were successful, and 9,635 were rejected - more than the total number of submissions only six years earlier. For type 2 grant applications, which request to continue an already-awarded R01 grant, the numbers tell the same story. In 1999, 3,214 funded scientists requested renewals; 1,772 received them, for a success rate of more than 55%. By 2005, 3,896 needed renewals of their grants, but only 1,262 requests were awarded; the success rate had fallen below 33%. So among nearly 4,000 scientists who were working off NIH funds in 2005, more than 2,600 lost that support. In 2007, more than 4,100 scientists were denied renewals of their R01s. '' It's been a slow squeeze on many research labs over the last half a dozen years. Earlier, the article mentions it, talking about how President Clinton promised - and followed through to double NIH funding in the late 90's, and then how once the war took over in 2003 the budget basically barely increased. It's interesting stuff - there's a whole lot of articles ranging from science mags to things like the Economist addressing this kind of stuff on the national level. -["Users/Edwins" ES]<br> - ------<br> - ''2009-01-31 11:51:17'' [[nbsp]] The funding of basic scientific research was not a priority for the Bush administration. I know he's got a lot of things on his plate, but hopefully we'll see evidence of that -- I think we've seen some good signs already. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]<br> - * And here's the evidence - I just got an email from the university saying that "The Committee on Research has recently been advised that an increase in research funds to NSF, NIH, DOE, and other federal agencies is very likely to become available in the near future." --["Users/CovertProfessor"]<br> - * Yeah, a lot of these things we've known since even before campaign and are hoping he can follow through on. For example, Obama and McCain [http://sharp.sefora.org/innovation2008/compare/race/president/2008/ answered questions] from Scientists and Engineers for America back in September. I believe Obama promised to double federal funding for basic science research over 10 years. And possibly among my favorite answers (as I'd rather not wait til I'm 40 to get my first NIH grant [the average age]): "increase research grants for early-career researchers to keep young scientists entering these fields." And of course, things he's said and mentioned elsewhere, it's looking like things might look up a bit. Woo! -["users/edwins" ES]<br> - * Yes, I know that promises were made, but a lot of things are promised during political campaigns. Did you do any sort of post-doc work? How long did it take you, if I may ask? I'm procrastinating between choosing between two labs; I think getting my PhD in one will be better if I want to continue an academic career and eventually become faculty myself, and the other lab will be much better if I want to jump into the industry and leave academia behind. Both labs would have a great mentor, they're just connected and focused in very different areas. And I'm concerned the track to tenure may be too difficult/involved. With a family, can't readily move to who knows where for a post-doc and then move again to a new university. --["Users/EdWins"]<br> - * Yes, I am in a tenure-track position, and no, it didn't take me long (a year, basically). But I was lucky. I think jumping around from postdoc to postdoc or from temporary position to temporary position is the far more common experience. So, you have to weigh your priorities -- what you want for your family and what you want from your career. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]<br> - * Congratulations! It's a difficult decision indeed, to try to plan so (relatively) far down the line. My significant other is a counselor and will be a therapist by the time I'm done, and one large difficulty lays in that she'll be state licensed (and in her field, it's difficult to re-license in another state). One of his last ones says he sodomizes the family Golden Retriever until it "bleeds from its asshole." See, you need to get these emails from me and get someone to help his children. Someone that says that he rapes his dog and his children with impunity needs to be stopped. I don't care about your idle uninformed threats; this guy who says he rapes his children and dog says he's going to kill me. Nothing you could do to me comes close to what this person has done to me. Hundreds of vulgar, obscene emails and a systematic terror campaign over five years. I'm not making any of this up and have everything documented and recordings of him saying to my employee she "deserved to get raped and fucking molested" as a child. Now he says writes he rapes his kids to try and hurt me. Friday, a Placer County Sheriff Deputy was sitting in front of my desk and an email came in saying that going to the police is not a good idea. I think it is a wonderful one. I signed a citizen's arrest and maybe his children will get help now. If you want to help, you need to a) contact me and I'll forward you the emails of him saying he rapes his children, and b) contact the Placer County District Attorney's office and anyone else you can think of to try and get this person locked up and his children away safe. Call me if you would like to hear the recording. The person is Kevin Salem aka Kawian Salim, 5908 Asbury Court, Sacramento, Ca His telephone is (916) 485-3647 and the name of his business is All Breeds Dog Training aka Real-Life Dog Training and aka All About Dog Training and Behavior Corporation. The website is www.DogSecrets.com. Please email from the contact page on www.Superdog.com. I can be reached by telephone and have the recordings available at the Sacramento number. My business has never been sued and we have never even been to a BBB sit-down mediation that we are required to participate in. We were a BBB member for five calendar years. We are the good "clean" one. Look at this page www.superdog.com/superdog_people.htm. This is who we are. Say what you want, but the Home page of my website has 54 dog s we trained off-leash which is about 50 more than any other dog trainer's in California. Our spotless record, photos, nine videos and our Method page www.superdog.com/superdog_method.htm our Philosophy page www.superdog.com/superdog_philosophy and Behavior page www.superdog.com/superdog_training.htm our Curriculum page www.superdog.com/superdog_curriculum.htm and the nine videos www.superdog.com/superdog_videos.htm and that only a couple people out of thousands and thousands in the Sacramento area, the Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and in six other states ever complain. --["Users/DavidBaron"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div>
