2007-09-25 04:30:43   Hey, thanks for the update about Cache Creek Nursery. Regarding Wiki Community: Keep in mind that there are tons of politics and strong opinions about public parks and gardens. You can either get involved if you'd like, or you can ignore it all, and leave the tablethumpers to their meetings and just stroll among the beautiful trees. Remember, there are a handful of people in that conversation, and over 10,000 signed up editors in the wiki (plus visitors who haven't signed up). It's a pretty good ratio. http://cheshirehall.net/link/ws/smile.pngJabberWokky

2007-11-04 23:30:13   That was a tough call on the portion of the comment that you removed. The issues that get raised by the actions of a small percentage of the anonymous users are often the tricky issues. On one hand the wiki is an open forum where a lot of positive information gets collected and exchanged and on the other every so often we have masked folks who run through shouting and trying to diminish the collection of information. I guess my hope is that they will take off their masks, calm down and join the rest of us in the act of creation rather than engaging in their destructive behaviors. I really have found the whole set of election pages disappointing this go around as compared with prior elections, and this was just one small part of it. I worry that the negative comments kept candidates from answering the questions to candidates. —JasonAller

2007-11-23 23:45:04   Thanks for giving an explanation of your edit. That makes sense to me. It might fit in Movie Theaters, since Sacramento is close enough for a trip to find a non-locally available movie (using the rationale that it would be info of use to somebody in Davis looking for it, a la listing the closest fish market or other non-locally available things that are close enough to travel to). It does smell vaguely of spam on that entry, however. —JabberWokky

2007-12-02 07:35:51   According to [WWW]these [WWW]comments, the menus of the Davis Guads are very similar to the Woodland Guad and they're all owned by the same family. As for the websites, I didn't look at the links. I just moved the existing links into the table. The Great Restaurants link has the menu for the Davis restaurants up (when it works), but yeah, what's up with the review being linked there? I suppose you could move it if you like. —WilliamLewis

2007-12-02 13:42:48   Oh, and as a followup, I did move that review out of the webpage field. When that other website is up ([WWW]http://web.archive.org/web/20070107084848/http://www.greatcaliforniarestaurants.com/davis/), it groups all three restaurants together. I believe restaurants pay for that listing. —WilliamLewis

2007-12-02 16:13:16   It just looks like their SQL database died. As soon as their server admin restarts the thing, they're good. —WilliamLewis

2008-01-07 22:27:21   Why remove descriptive verbage that makes an entry pleasant to read? There's no need to turn the wiki into a dry, factual database — there are plenty of those already around, and more popping up every day (all it takes is a business listing database to build that). It's also not quite honest... the places and people in Davis are full of character and whimsy, and to turn them into mere facts and figures unfair to the subject, the readers and everybody else involved. —JabberWokky

2008-01-08 13:24:11   Hit info, and there are a few tabs, one of which is "User Info". If you are using certain browsers you won't see then, and then you have to manually add ?action=userinfo to the end of the web address. Most browsers support the tabs, however, so you should see the tabs when you hit Info (the User Info tab only appears when you are looking at a user's personal entry). —JabberWokky

2008-01-28 23:09:51   The CoS' greed is well documented. Take a look at how much Scientology costs. Take a look at Hubbard's policy letters where he writes things like "MAKE MONEY. MAKE MORE MONEY. MAKE OTHER PEOPLE PRODUCE SO AS TO MAKE MORE MONEY." This is from a registered non-profit organization. Their crimes are well documented. Check out Operation Snow White, Operation Freakout, Lisa McPhearson, Quentin Hubbard, Sea Org RPF, etc etc etc. By any reasonable standard, the CoS is criminal and greedy. The levels they take this stuff to moves such declarations far above the realm of opinions. —WilliamLewis

2008-01-29 00:12:34   It's not a theology debate. It's about a criminal organization that has done things that mafia families can only dream about. —WilliamLewis

2008-01-29 12:42:30   I'm not absolutely sure as there has been a bit of back and forth and side arguments here, but I believe your point regarding the Scientology entry might be phrased as "the entry is being hijacked for a cause"? —JabberWokky

2008-04-16 19:19:25   don! i miss you and your crazy progeny. —SabrinaSimonton

2008-05-07 10:10:38   you have photos from that day?? i'd love to see them sometime, it always gives me a kick to see photographic evidence that i once was a super-awkward adolescent —SabrinaSimonton

2008-05-12 13:27:11   you're freaking great. totally lol. —PxlAted

2008-05-23 10:48:17   Good call on that edit on The Old Teahouse. When I read the original message when it first appeared, it reminded me of someone who starts a fight, loses, and then tries to throw insults afterwards...sad and distasteful... —SunjeetBaadkar

2008-07-23 20:08:24   Heh. I feel your pain regarding valueless reviews. Have you seen my food poisoning complaint? —JabberWokky

2008-11-16 19:09:44   Don, the following is from the database:

Contributor Recipient Contest Name Amount Contributed Contribution Date Contribution Type
WISCOMBE SHAWN MR., WISCOMBES'S DAVIS FUNERAL CHAPEL, FUNERAL DIRECTOR, DAVIS, CA 95616-4626 PROTECTMARRIAGE.COM - YES ON 8, A PROJECT OF CALIFORNIA RENEWAL, ID#1302592 07-0068 LIMITS ON MARRIAGE $200.00 10/14/2008 MONETARY

Doesn't that look like the owner, or a family member of the owner who works there? —JasonAller

2008-11-16 19:25:14   I agree with you about the employees (unless there is a pattern that looks like the management is using employees to make donations). Its funny, cause I wouldn't have gone looking at those databases over this issue if it hadn't become a wiki issue. Thanks. —JasonAller

2008-12-10 19:42:26   Hi Don, and thanks for the great info in version 5 of Fig Trees! —DougWalter

2008-12-14 20:31:53   I find certain comments to be rather deplorable. When is it ok to modify other people's comments? Is it better to modify them or just outright remove them? —JasonAller

2008-12-14 20:40:23   I think at a minimum it would be good practice to leave a note on the userpage of the person who's comment is altered or removed. I still don't know if altering is better than removal, or removal with a comment about the comment having been removed? —JasonAller

2009-02-15 10:50:57   It is very annoying when user's like vlam, put negative comments even though they have not been there for any service.People like them don't even use there real name or don't have a page.It is also sound harassing at the same time.Someone can give me a feedback on this or have any suggestions. —jasen

2009-02-15 15:53:53   I just point out the fact, no harasment intended. This is after all a free country, everyone is entitle to voice there opinions. If you deleded my positing I'll posted again. I strong believe to general public should know the truth nothing but the truth no drama here! —vlam

2009-06-16 11:44:17   Spelling and grammar choices offer insight into commenters. It's better not to alter others' comments, even if you intend to improve them. —ElleWeber

2009-06-16 17:40:56   Hey, I just want to say I agree with you there aren't really rules on the wiki as much as conventions and I think its especially bad to treat comments so absolutely differently from other text on the wiki. —NickSchmalenberger

2009-06-16 23:24:00   I agreed with you and Larry. The "unbreakable" rule wasn't always a rule, more of a general guideline, and I think there are times where many general wiki conventions are silly in some specific contexts. In this case, the notion of calling someone up to ask if by "sweat" they had meant the word "sweet" is honestly pretty darn silly, as Larry pointed out (though that guy is Amazing). —EdWins

2009-09-15 19:13:55   Hey, Don. I'm over my head when it comes to the difference between landscape designers and landscape architects. It looks like I conflated the two when I created the page. I'll rename the page to "Landscape Design," and the page could be edited to distinguish between the two. —robinlaughlin

2009-09-15 22:30:13   Thanks for the clarification of "landscape designer" vs "landscape architect." Would you happen to have the names/phone numbers for the landscape architects in Davis? Do you think that would be worthwhile information for the wiki? —CovertProfessor
