I've made it through two quarters of this madness! + + For those of you who don't know, the first year of math grad school is really tough. You can't expect to have any sort of life outside of school, although some people manage to do it. Personally I have not, aside from running every other day at exactly 6AM, and going grocery shopping. For most first year students, social life consists of interacting with people in our department, sometimes just people of the same year. That is about 20 or 30 people in our case, and if you don't make friends among those people you are shit out of luck. + + Davis in general is a nice town, and people are friendly or at least polite, which even if it seems phony sometimes, it beats getting treated like shit by people who hate you. There's not much of a music scene here, or much of any kind of scene if you're used to a bigger city. What there are a lot of however is interchangeable, generic college kids. Every now and then I meet someone who makes me realize that people aren't all the same here, but it doesn't happen very often and probably won't for the rest of this year at least. But with that said, there is some good stuff around here somewhere.

Davis is incredibly barefoot tolerant. + + + === === + For most of summer 2006 I participated in RIPS 2006, a research program at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics in ["UC Los Angeles" UCLA]. We worked in teams of four students on problems presented by industry sponsors. My team worked with Symantec to develop image similarity techniques for use in detecting image-based e-mail spam. This introduced me to some aspects of computer vision which I may pursue here at UC Davis. I really don't like shoes and for the last several years I have gone barefoot pretty much all of the time, everywhere. You could say I'm a hardcore barefooter ([http://www.barefooters.org]) and quite stubborn about it. As a result I can do some things that habitually shod people can't do, like run and hike barefoot on all kinds of surfaces. I'm a member of Davis' ["Golden Valley Harriers"], with whom I run as much as time permits.
