SF is kind of out of the way, so I am considering getting some kaffir lime seeds and growing some myself.
+ Since you have purchased and used kaffir lime leaves before, I have to ask: Are the leaves a crucial component to thai curry/thai curry paste? I tried to make some thai curry paste myself the other day, sans the lime leaves, but the homemade version was...not very thai curry tasting at all. Of course, my expertise (or lack of) in thai cooking probably had something to do with that, and the recipe, being vegan, probably didn't help matters either... --["Users/il"]

Users/JonathanLawtonhttp://daviswiki.org/Users/JonathanLawton2009-11-06 04:47:52JabberWokkyRevert to version 30 (Spam. '08) that I've really been missing out on a lot of what the town has to offer. I am now making a conscience effort to try out new things. This section is mostly for me to keep track of what I've done here and what I thought about it. If you take any of the stuff below too seriously (as with most all of the reviews on this site), you're nuts. This is, obviously, a major work in progress.
-
- *Eating
- *Sushi
- *Buffet Quality (e.g. the "everything asian" buffet places such as King or Crazy buffet in San Jose)
- Fortunately, I haven't found any of these places in Davis. Even the sushi buffets in town don't stoop to this level. There are, however, plenty of these places in the greater Sacramento area that do. Avoid.
- *Restaurant Quality (a regular sushi place; the food isn't amazing, but it's decent)
- *["Fuji Chef"] - For the buffet, the lines are very long and the place is always crowded. The food is decent, although the nigiri obviously has extra rice. They'll give you plates full of sashimi (or anything else from the menu) if you ask, though, so it's not really a big deal. For dinner, it's much less crowded, but the food is pretty much the same. I'd go back.
- *["Sushi Nobu"] - I went for a weekend lunch buffet and it was pretty busy but there wasn't any wait. The waitresses all seemed friendly enough, and the food was definitely on par with Fuji's, which is fine for me. The nigiri did have a good deal of rice, but, again, no more than Fuji. Having the sushi come by "dim sum" style is really great! There was plenty of variety and they seemed happy to bring anything else on the menu that wasn't already coming around. I'd definitely go back. (01/12/08)
- *["Mirai"] - We sat at the bar and the food was very good. The chef would periodically give us something random we didn't order for free. It was a little pricey but it did seem a little better than some of the other sushi places in town. I'd be willing to go back, but I think Fuji or Nobu are better deals. (Sept. (?) 2006)
- *Amazing Quality (The absolute best. The places where the fish is very thick and fresh. Often expensive. e.g. Tomi Sushi in Cupertino)
- I don't know of any places either in town or in Sacramento that belong here. If you know of a place, let me know!
- *Korean
- *["Manna"] - I had the beef for dinner. It wasn't bad, but I felt the portions were a bit small. I'd be willing to try it again, but wasn't really impressed overall. (Dec. 2007)
- *Vietnamese
- *["Sunrise Restaurant"] - The sandwiches and spring rolls here are pretty good. Service can a bit slow (I think it's just a husband-wife team running the place), also, they've misheard my order or charged me incorrectly more than once (though it always seems to have been an honest mistake). I ordered a jackfruit shake once and it was obviously from a powder -- not so great. They have a minimum charge policy for credit cards, which is pretty shady. In general, I much prefer Hoa Viet, but I do come back here for the sandwiches! (2007)
- *["Hoa Viet"] - I usually get the noodle bowls here. The portions are quite generous, and in general the food seems fine. I tried the pho once and it was fine, but definitely not the best I've had (which, incidentally, was in downtown Mountain View). The Vietnamese coffee wasn't very large and lacked the strength I'd normally expect. The waiter sometimes seems grumpy. Overall, I come here for the noodle bowls. (2006?)
- *Pizza
- *["Woodstock's Pizza"] - Pretty good (2006)
- *["Pizza Guys"] - Okay (2006)
- *["Steve's Place Pizza"] - Fine (2007)
- *Chinese
- *["Ding How"] - Pretty good (2006)
- *Greek
- *["Symposium"] - Very good.
+
+ *Eating
+ *Sushi
+ *Buffet Quality (e.g. the "everything asian" buffet places such as King or Crazy buffet in San Jose)
+ Fortunately, I haven't found any of these places in Davis. Even the sushi buffets in town don't stoop to this level. There are, however, plenty of these places in the greater Sacramento area that do. Avoid.
+ *Restaurant Quality (a regular sushi place; the food isn't amazing, but it's decent)
+ *["Fuji Chef"] - For the buffet, the lines are very long and the place is always crowded. The food is decent, although the nigiri obviously has extra rice. They'll give you plates full of sashimi (or anything else from the menu) if you ask, though, so it's not really a big deal. For dinner, it's much less crowded, but the food is pretty much the same. I'd go back.
+ *["Sushi Nobu"] - I went for a weekend lunch buffet and it was pretty busy but there wasn't any wait. (01/12/08)
+ *["Mirai"] - We sat at the bar and the food was very good. The chef would periodically give us something random we didn't order for free. It was a little pricey but it did seem a little better than some of the other sushi places in town. I'd be willing to go back, but I think Fuji or Nobu are better deals. (Sept. (?) 2006)
+ *Amazing Quality (The absolute best. The places where the fish is very thick and fresh. Often expensive. e.g. Tomi Sushi in Cupertino)
+ I don't know of any places either in town or in Sacramento that belong here. If you know of a place, let me know!
+ *Korean
+ *["Manna"] - I had the beef for dinner. It wasn't bad, but I felt the portions were a bit small. I'd be willing to try it again, but wasn't really impressed overall. (Dec. 2007)
+ *Vietnamese
+ *["Sunrise Restaurant"] - The sandwiches and spring rolls here are pretty good. (2007)
+ *["Hoa Viet"] - I usually get the noodle bowls here. (2006?)
+ *Pizza
+ *["Woodstock's Pizza"] - Pretty good (2006)
+ *["Pizza Guys"] - Okay (2006)
+ *["Steve's Place Pizza"] - Fine (2007)
+ *Chinese
+ *["Ding How"] - Pretty good (2006)
+ *Greek
+ *["Symposium"] - Very good. I had the Gyros platter and some dolmas. The place is a little bit fancy, I don't go there regularly, but I'd definitely go back.
