Even if she were wrong, which I'm not at all sure of, it's not like she would have just apologized and left when confronted. They can do whatever they want and the consequences for their actions, if there are any, are far away in some courtroom. '08) that I've really been missing out on a lot of what the town has to offer. I am now making a conscience effort to try out new things. This section is mostly for me to keep track of what I've done here and what I thought about it. If you take any of the stuff below too seriously (as with most all of the reviews on this site), you're nuts. This is, obviously, a major work in progress.
-
- *Eating
- *Sushi
- *Buffet Quality (e.g. the "everything asian" buffet places such as King or Crazy buffet in San Jose)
- Fortunately, I haven't found any of these places in Davis. Even the sushi buffets in town don't stoop to this level. There are, however, plenty of these places in the greater Sacramento area that do. Avoid.
- *Restaurant Quality (a regular sushi place; the food isn't amazing, but it's decent)
- *["Fuji Chef"] - For the buffet, the lines are very long and the place is always crowded. The food is decent, although the nigiri obviously has extra rice. They'll give you plates full of sashimi (or anything else from the menu) if you ask, though, so it's not really a big deal. For dinner, it's much less crowded, but the food is pretty much the same. I'd go back.
- *["Sushi Nobu"] - I went for a weekend lunch buffet and it was pretty busy but there wasn't any wait. The waitresses all seemed friendly enough, and the food was definitely on par with Fuji's, which is fine for me. The nigiri did have a good deal of rice, but, again, no more than Fuji. Having the sushi come by "dim sum" style is really great! There was plenty of variety and they seemed happy to bring anything else on the menu that wasn't already coming around. I'd definitely go back. (01/12/08)
- *["Mirai"] - We sat at the bar and the food was very good. The chef would periodically give us something random we didn't order for free. It was a little pricey but it did seem a little better than some of the other sushi places in town. I'd be willing to go back, but I think Fuji or Nobu are better deals. (Sept. (?) 2006)
- *Amazing Quality (The absolute best. The places where the fish is very thick and fresh. Often expensive. e.g. Tomi Sushi in Cupertino)
- I don't know of any places either in town or in Sacramento that belong here. If you know of a place, let me know!
- *Korean
- *["Manna"] - I had the beef for dinner. It wasn't bad, but I felt the portions were a bit small. I'd be willing to try it again, but wasn't really impressed overall. (Dec. 2007)
- *Vietnamese
- *["Sunrise Restaurant"] - The sandwiches and spring rolls here are pretty good. Service can a bit slow (I think it's just a husband-wife team running the place), also, they've misheard my order or charged me incorrectly more than once (though it always seems to have been an honest mistake). I ordered a jackfruit shake once and it was obviously from a powder -- not so great. They have a minimum charge policy for credit cards, which is pretty shady. In general, I much prefer Hoa Viet, but I do come back here for the sandwiches! (2007)
- *["Hoa Viet"] - I usually get the noodle bowls here. The portions are quite generous, and in general the food seems fine. I tried the pho once and it was fine, but definitely not the best I've had (which, incidentally, was in downtown Mountain View). The Vietnamese coffee wasn't very large and lacked the strength I'd normally expect. The waiter sometimes seems grumpy. Overall, I come here for the noodle bowls. (2006?)
- *Pizza
- *["Woodstock's Pizza"] - Pretty good (2006)
- *["Pizza Guys"] - Okay (2006)
- *["Steve's Place Pizza"] - Fine (2007)
- *Chinese
- *["Ding How"] - Pretty good (2006)
- *Greek
- *["Symposium"] - Very good. I had the Gyros platter and some dolmas. The place is a little bit fancy, I don't go there regularly, but I'd definitely go back. (2006)
- *Burgers
- *["Redrum Burger"] - Slow
- *["Habit Burger"] - Pretty good
- *Mexican
- *["Taqueria Guadalajara"] - What can I possibly say about this place considering it's amazing reputation? The super burrito is usually very, very good and the chips are as well. Recommended! (2006)
- *["El Mariachi"] - Decent burrito. Large salsa bar with novel flavors. (2006)
- *["Dos Coyotes"] - Reasonable. (2006)
- *Dessert
- *["Yogurt Shack"] - Frozen yogurt. How can you mess this up? Toppings were fun. Overall, seemed pricey, but fills a niche and will be fun to go to every so often. (summer 2007)
-
- *Playing
- *Bars - I don't like bars. Bars that have friendly (or no!) bouncers automatically score a lot of points with me.
- *["Soga's"] - Why are there so many horror stories about this place? My experience was fine, although it did seem a bit like a meat market.
- *["Froggy's"] - Very small, but it was quiet when I went. Seemed friendly enough.
- *["Little Prague"] - I liked this place. No bouncer (at least when I went), friendly bar tender. Large, open, quiet.
- *["G Street Pub"] - I never made it inside this place. The cover was steep ($7) and from the outside the place reeks of bad attitude. One day, I will make it inside. Maybe. (2007)
- *["Sophia's Thai Kitchen"] - Went on trivia night. WAY TOO FULL since the place is way too small (only froggy's is smaller). Overwhelming. Would not return.
- *["Sudwerk"] - Friendly atmosphere since it's mostly a restaurant. Good beer selection since it's a brewery.
- *["The Graduate"] - Okay atmosphere since it's more of a pizza-type-watch-the-game place than a bar. '''TERRIBLE''' hotwings. I think they were just chicken wings covered in tobasco. Yuck!
- *Bike Rides - I like to ride my bike for fun and exercise. Take the bike paths and county roads and see places you wouldn't otherwise get to see.
- *[http://www.ucdtri.com/workouts/bike.php Triathlon Loops]
- *Airport Loop - First ride. I won't be sorry if I never hear them again.
- *["Band-uh"] - Awesome!
- *Walks
- *["Olive Tree Lane"] - Very fun!
