Kelly is a current UC Davis fourth-year double-majoring in Linguistics and Japanese who mainly lurks on the wiki. She is a former resident of the pirate building and has magnificent calves from living on the third floor. She lived on the second floor of Olson with all the other Lin majors. From the end of July 2008 until August 2009, she studied abroad at
Doshisha in Kyoto, Japan.
Since coming to UC Davis she has:
-
been an on-off Japanese tutor (she really doesn't need the units. . )
-
become a volunteer DJ at KDVS. She currently is a co-host of the show
"Kitteh Kitteh Bang Bang".
-
seen a professor in a Sylvester the cat suit
-
blimp-wrangled during the rain-filled Picnic Day parade while miraculously avoiding hypothermia
-
climbed inside a dryer to try to dispel "the dryer curse".
-
developed a keen hatred for the plastic, squeaky, "star wars" bucket chairs common to Olson and several other halls
-
announced the Picnic Day 2008 parade with Rob Roy
-
temporarily moved overseas
-
become certifiably tri-lingual (English, Japanese, Korean)
Interesting fact: She cannot and does not ride a bike. The horror! Nor does she want to learn, despite many well-intentioned efforts by well-meaning friends. Quoting another wiki user, "I don't feel like donating skin and blood to the cause now."
She is also known as Kelp (hence DJ Kelp), Kellkell, Kell, Kellz, and Marissa, in declining order of usage. As for how she got that nickname...it's a long story.
One day she got curious about her Olson lifestyle and decided to tally up all the times she's had classes in each classroom. The results in a shoddy bar chart:
101 X
106 XX
117 X
141 X
147 XX
151 XX
158 X
207 XX
217 X
223 XXXXXXX
261 X
Amazingly, for her final full-time quarter here at Davis, she has not one class in Olson. It's a Festivus miracle!
At Doshisha she mainly lived in the 弘風館, although she had a few classes at the 新町 campus and the 至誠館, and the basement of the 神学館. (Don't worry, most Japanese people can't read most of that either.) Her actual place of residence was a curiously named dorm called "Richard's House", which caused a lot of confusion when telling others where she was living.

2007-09-29 23:51:54 All the profs and students call it ross-ler. Maybe we're all wrong, but that's what we say. —WilliamLewis
2007-09-30 10:08:57 hi kelly, thanks a bunch for your comment on my page. i as well find the way language is used to be interesting. i was unfamiliar with the term "socio-linguistics" but the teacher you named sounds awesome and i'll be sure to stop by her office some time. you did a swell job djing for your first time! and it's good you pointed out the outdatedness on the kdvs dj page. maybe we can split it up into past djs and current djs. —JessicaRockwell
2007-10-01 00:24:45 I suppose I should have noted that the pronunciation may possibly be incorrect. Regan has a similar problem. Everyone pronounces it ree-gun when it is supposed to be ray-gun. —WilliamLewis
2007-10-09 08:37:20 Thanks for adding the link to the KDVS schedule! —CalamityJanie
2007-11-28 04:46:46 Heh. Everybody should always come to the aid of a fellow human being who cries out for Kelp. —JabberWokky
2008-06-14 14:12:34 Hey, thanks for the reminder about DARE. It was a single volume when I was last in formal studies, and I didn't know that the fourth volume had been published. Time to saunter on down to the campus library and poke at it with a stick. My current favorite regional term local to this area (central Pennsylvania) is afters. We will be going to afters later tonight with a group. —JabberWokky
