They just don't use it casually and they ''really'' don't depend on outside power lines (each community is aggressively self-sufficient). As an example, cell phones for business and medical help are quite common (and no, I have no idea how cell towers jibes with being self-sufficient). It's not a matter of how advanced the technology is, it is in how it impacts your life and the community. Penn State has a decent number of students and townies who are from Amish families, and when I lived there I had more than a few late night back porch discussions about the various groups. I have quite a bit of respect for their choices and history. The historical relationship they've have with the federal government is really interesting (they ''really'' don't like to support war in ''any'' way, and refuse to pay into Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, preferring to take care of their own). Neat culture, and a really fantastic example of a successful non-traditional culture living by their own beliefs within the United States. --["Users/JabberWokky"] </td> <td> <span>+</span> ''2010-11-20 19:39:41'' [[nbsp]] It's actually a myth that Amish do not use electricity. I'm a bit flexible but do avoid meat a large percentage of the time. My kitchen has only cheese as an animal product right now. 99% of the time I see no need for meat and honestly I can't afford it anyway! Also helps that I hate touching raw meat so typically cooking it is out of the question. --["Users/RyanMikulovsky"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> Users/MaxLucashttp://daviswiki.org/Users/MaxLucas2009-04-29 22:01:54RyanMikulovskyComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Users/MaxLucas<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 10: </td> <td> Line 10: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + ''2009-04-29 22:01:54'' [[nbsp]] I have absolutely no will power in avoiding cheese.
