Describe Nick Schmalenberger here.
I have lived in Davis all my life and like it, especially Davis water. On Davis Wiki, I like to see active discussion about Davis in a very free and highly linked mesh topology way like Katamari Damacy. My hobbies are collecting comic books, reading, bsing with people on Davis wiki, learning about UNIX and computer programming, amateur radio(KG6PIP), and being outside. I like to ride my bicycle around town and go backpacking, skiing, and canoeing. I am an Eagle Scout from Troop 111. I am usually in the daviswiki irc channel and on AIM as nickzxcv. Someday I would like to visit the
Isle of Skye, because I like the name, among other places such as
Sky Harbor, to which I hope to go back some day. I think Sky Harbor is the most beautiful and melodious name for an airport I have ever heard.

My favorite comic book series is
Girl Genius by
Phil and
Kaja Foglio. It is a webcomic now, here:
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/, but it was in print for thirteen issues and I own all of them in single issues, trade paperback, hardcover, or all three. I also like Neil Gaiman, Fables, Star Wars, and lots of other science fiction and fantasy, including the book
Darkmage by
Barbara Hambly. I am one of the few geeks in the world who has read Ender's Game (twice, both assigned) and didn't like it. I have an account at
Librarything. My favorite Star Wars movies are IV,II,V,III,I,VI in the order of my preference from best to worst. Firefly/Serenity are amazing and much like my favorite Star Wars episode, A New Hope. I also like to read some other webcomics and play games like Nethack.

2007-03-14 08:10:38 Seriously good idea for an entry. It's one of those things that people need to research now and then. UCD Med Center likely has a booklet on local resources. —JabberWokky
2007-03-15 19:05:52 Because the official site claimed there were no groups in the area. I was actually curious, so I did check. I just punched it in again, and there are four listed. Either I did the wrong zip the first time (unlikely as it popped up in the typeahead), or I missed Davis, as it's down in the list, and I think I thought it was by geographic distance and now I see it's alphabetic... okay, so I did check, but my medication soaked brain couldn't parse a simple list when I did, apparantly. Many apologies, no slight intended. —JabberWokky
2007-03-15 19:10:03 In fact, my concurrent comment on IRC to that chunk of edits was "< JabberWokky> Either I'm doing a zillion really really crappy edits, or being half-out of it on medication helps my wiki editing skills." Guess that one fell into the really really crappy side 'o the pile. —JabberWokky
2007-03-16 12:11:14 Hi! I'll take a stab at more info for the Geology section. First thought is that the Sutter Butte's aren't really part of Yolo County, though are part of our "region". —RocksandDirt

2007-03-29 02:06:23 RE: Your Edit on Elections— I'm pretty sure that it is only for undergraduates, not members of ASUCD. For example, BrentLaabs is paying the ASUCD fee, which makes him a member of ASUCD, but he is a grad atmospheric science student, and cannot vote in ASUCD elections (at this time). However, I am pretty sure he is currently taking a lawsuit against the association in order to enfranchise himself. —MaxMikalonis
2007-03-29 10:52:39 I think my boy scout troop (192) had a feud with yours for a long time. Always fighting for first place or whatever (Baden-Powell) at the camporees. I think 192 is dead now. —BradBenedict

2007-06-15 14:26:56 I mildly prefer the "I ♥ maia" title, although I think the "I Heart maia" format should be a redirect for search and link purposes given that many people don't know how to type in unicode. If I recall correctly, I just picked whichever was easier to restore, since there was a catfight about it this morning and both got deleted in the scuffle. I was fixing the zillion stupid edit wars and was concentrating on preserving content. I may have just restored it to the previous version to be less antagonistic about the restoration of the entry. I figured it could be discussed after the reverts and vandalism was cleaned up. —JabberWokky
2007-06-16 11:51:03 Now I just need you to provide an example of something not found in Davis.
—JabberWokky
2007-06-17 13:19:18 I linked to the schools entry at the top of campus because I couldn't think of any Davis local areas referred to as campuses. Most corporate research facilities I've been to are called campuses, as are most daycares. Any others you can think of? —JabberWokky

2007-11-07 11:22:28 Nick, I am somewhat new to editing Daviswiki. I work at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis and wanted to make sure that the information about the church on Daviswiki is accurate and accessible. I looked at the other spiritual organization pages and took their lead as far as what information to include and how. This morning I looked again and saw that you have rearranged my section headings and a few other things. Is there some reason that I can't have the sections in the order I had them? I read through the instructions, and tried to make the information as easy to read as possible, but now that you've rearranged them, I am left wondering why. Please e-mail me to let me know if there are wiki conventions I should be aware of, otherwise I plan to make future changes as I see fit. Thank you. - Mandy Dawn (UUCDstaff) office@uusofdavis.org —UUCDstaff
2007-11-16 00:27:55 In answer to the question you posed on the Safeway page: yes, I think the State Market and Harvest Market pages can be merged. Harvest Market was the final incarnation of State Market. I'm not sure why they added "Harvest" to the name, but it was the same people running it (the Gees). Sniff. I miss George. —robinlaughlin
2007-11-16 00:32:09 Yikes. No idea why your last comments are underlined. I couldn't see any weird code. I'm wondering if the previous poster's name (with all those u's) did some voodoo. —robinlaughlin

2007-12-12 20:53:26 how can you not like ender's game? my second day of reading and i'm almost done. talking about the battleroom, the net, arguing online, playing computer games, it's all keeping me from putting the book down. i can see why orson scott card finds chess to be dull (according to his introduction). trying to figure out how to win the battles is so much more fascinating! —JessicaRockwell
2008-02-22 12:57:39 I think the Christopher Cabaldon page could be copied and pasted into the westsac wiki. But, it's pertinent on the DavisWiki because he's running for the 8th assembly district, which also covers Davis. I'll put the wikipedia link in there too. —brandonhkey

2008-10-15 08:28:03 Hey, not sure where you got the info about the bubonic plague but, if you have the reference handy, you might check for hantavirus as well. These days bubonic plague is pretty trivial to treat, but hantaviruses aren't so treatable. The rodents I'm familiar with (Mus, Peromyscus, etc) carry it and it's a pretty common warning and topic among people who raise rodents. It usually comes up in discussing rescues of wild rodents. I have no idea if squirrels carry it, but if so, it (and the plague and rabies notes) should probably go up into the entry. —JabberWokky

2008-12-18 05:58:22 Thanks Nick. I'm not a fan of Flash either, especially that movie he has, but what you are looking for is exactly what he does. Most of the people in this industry talk about "experiences" because the system itself changes from customer to customer, but he could probably be more specific. He spoke to me about a couple of his past customers and it would probably be useful to discuss those on the Web site, with pictures. —condemned2bfree

2008-12-27 23:27:00 hi Nick, Jabberwocky showed me what edit you were referring to; I thanked him for clarifying. I did indeed make that edit. Boy, that was a reallllly long time ago but I remembering making it because that bit of info was completely irrelevant to the entry. Hope this clears that up for ya! —EliseKane
2008-12-27 23:40:38 My reasoning is that someone's personal anecdote about being dropped off at a store to wander around without any money to spend has nothing to do with Fry's Electronics. Entries should remain uncluttered because their purpose is to provide information to the wiki public in a straightforward, mainly factually-based manner. —EliseKane
2008-12-28 14:35:53 TO: Mr. Nick Schmalenberger CC: JabberWocky
Mr. Schmalenberger, I would appreciate it if you didn't get belligerent in your messages to me. It is offensive and unproductive toward our main cause, which is improving the wiki. I love Davis, as do you, so it would be in our best interests to treat each other with respect. Note that it is in conflict with Wiki Ethics to use "confrontational speech."
You mention that I removed the portion of the article "just because you don't like it". This is a false assertion, per my explanation for you as to why I edited that entry (see comment above). If that is your interpretation of my reasoning, I apologize that you misunderstand me so vastly.
You state that "the idea of pages having a purpose of informing the wiki public is BS." It is my opinion that you have missed the [overarching objective] of the wiki. I am also afraid that you have neglected to read the Wiki Introduction, which states that the wiki is "a place for sharing, listening, learning, growing and exploring," and that it is "a place to record Davis culture, places, [and] spots." I fully agree with your AND the wiki Intro's sentiment that "what the wiki contains and means is up to you. As a general rule you should contribute content you think will be helpful or insightful to others, but even this rule can be broken at times."
In removing Marie Huynh's anecdote, my objective was only toward improving the entry as a whole, and not toward removing a humanizing aspect of the entry. I still maintain that Huynh's anecdote is less of a humanizing aspect of the entry and more of an irrelevancy for the fact that it is NOT informative, as would be Jabberwocky's example of "there are particularly nice smelling flowers on the slope outside the store." (see Jabberwocky comment for reference.) Do what you will with the Fry's page, however, because you clearly have a very deep attachment to Huynh's comment whereby you felt it necessary to contact me.
As for your citation of my Orgasmatron page, I am flattered that you expended such effort to find a page I created so as to back up your argument, because this gives me the opportunity to share with a fellow Davis-lover a great piece of town trivia: It just so happens that the Orgasmatron's sign has been up since the 1970s and was the location of all California Aggie photographic production pre-digital technology (note that this is a "place" or "spot" in Davis, as the Wiki Intro states). There are, of course, secrets about the room that I am not at liberty to divulge because they remain classified except for those in the know at The California Aggie. In essence, this page exists because as you say, "I can relate to [the] text from my own experiences." —EliseKane
2009-01-23 10:45:31 Hey, Nick. I think the restaurant you're talking about used to be A&W Rootbeer. They had carhops and a bench or two. In the late summer the bench would be swarming with yellow jackets. When I was a kid we used to get gallon jugs of rootbeer that they had for take home. Mmmmm. There was a space next to the barber shop that was a record store that had used records and it was a natural food store for a while that was operated by Bob Black who became mayor and later a county supervisor or something like that. The natural food store moved over by the hardwars store on G street in the building with the mural that faces the hardware store parking lot. —JohnBaker
2009-01-23 10:58:07 Guseppie's Restaurant was on the same side of the street farther east down Olive Drive from Slatter's Court. The Calori's house was behind it. It had an outdoor dining area, I think, and there's probably something else in the same building now. It had a bar inside, too. I imagine that big cork oak tree is still there, too. Can't tell you for sure because I've been living in Chicago for about 30 years and haven't been back to Davis but a few times. —JohnBaker

2009-03-12 12:22:03 Typical paperclips probably don't have enough mass to toss far enough. I'd go with a binder clip. Other than the smallest ones, you should be able to hit a NAT enabled router. —JabberWokky

2009-03-26 22:29:20 I could try, and if I did I would be successful. However, I do not wish to. I'm a guy, and I think my Fiancee wouldn't like it very much. But thanks for the offer. —Jteeples

2009-05-21 02:17:00 Yelp is a fake site? Their wiki entry talks of some criticisms, but I wasn't aware that there was a widespread problem with them. That's not to say that I've ever used them or care about them, I just didn't know there was such rancor about them. —JoePomidor
2009-05-25 13:24:40 Kudos on the nice incorporation of Google street-view. Kudos! KUDOS!!!! —TheAmazingLarry
2009-06-12 11:44:04 um... because I am a davis student and resident and huge contributer to the Davis community, as well as the sole organizer of this event, and additionally because it's being cosponsored by KDVS, i think it's perfectly acceptable that it is on the daviswiki. last time i checked this was a free community of helpful information. Most of the people vendoring at this are from Davis and it would be useful for them to know.
So, yes, I will add it to the sacto wiki, but I'm keeping it on here as well —SharmiBasu

2009-08-27 09:54:38 No kidding. Probably the worst thing that they could have done too, that was one of the main features of SC. Supposedly it's go "Cut down on piracy," or some such. 2009-09-23 04:37:39 I wasn't being very serious (in fact, if I were, I'd have headed downstairs to go check the title and get the author). Your point is valid, but I'm more irked by the lack of redirects that connect common and formal names. That way the namespace would carry both forms without data duplication. That's what they are for, anyway... pointers to the same data by multiple labels. There is precedent, however, for names being the most commonly known official form rather than the proper formal form. I remember it coming up at least twice (and a third time as a side issue during the whole Solidarity thing). Looking for official use via a quick Google search (and skipping over dozens of Registrar uses, as they shorten names anyway), I can find it in Dateline, UC Davis Magazine and a couple hundred other ucdavis.edu pages. Certainly not the formal name, but used by authoritative sources. With the odd "if it doesn't have a link to it, kill the redirect!" tendency around here, there's little incentive to add a formal/informal pointer to the actual content, and readers would likely be more confused than enlightened by the full, formal title. (Yes, I'm stating a viewpoint of the situation more than making an argument for or against anything; there's no real "correct" solution here, IMO... you are right, and they are also right by practical use. My preferred method that would make room for both isn't currently supported by the editing community). —JabberWokky
2009-10-12 06:32:13 Because it was referring to the Woodland Starbucks. There is a link higher above that is referring to Davis Starbucks already. I thought it pretty clear. —RyanMikulovsky
