nov5.jpgRob Roy scooping free ice cream for voters at Ben & Jerry's the day Barack Obama was elected in 2008. Notice the T-shirt.Chill.jpgSteveOstrowski, of all people, says Rob got too excited over Greg Webb being called a "young [wikipedia]Ralph Nader."

While he did not or had not seen the Davis Wiki at the time this page was originally created, Rob Roy deserves an entry because he is, quite simply, an integral part of Davis culture and lore. He moved to South Korea to teach English in March of 2009 but during his near seven year stint in Davis he was a Substitute teacher for the Davis Joint Unified School District, manager and cake decorator at the Ben & Jerry's downtown, a DJ on KDVS, and ran for office in ASUCD Senate, ASUCD President and Davis City Council elections, and, well, he wears an impressive variety of hats. He has appeared in several infamous RobotMedia films. He also was featured in a 2008 New York Times story about people that live in college towns after they graduate, entitled "[WWW]Towns They Don’t Want to Leave."

Rob Roy is the main song writer/lead singer/banjo, accordion, guitar player for Sterling Riot. They can be heard at [WWW]purevolume.com/SterlingRiot or [WWW]myspace.com/SterlingRiot. They have played at CoHo Live, the Tri-Coops, and rocked out to much fanfare on the patio of Sophia's Thai Kitchen in October of 2007.

Rob Roy won a bid for ASUCD Senate in Winter 2005 ASUCD Election, receiving an unprecedented [WWW]544 first round votes. Read [WWW]Rob Roy's epic story of the election of that election. His biggest accomplishment as a senator was fulfilling his campaign promise of getting staplers in the computer labs. While it seems mundane now, in 2005 it was a big issue.

Rob Roy successfully lost a bid for Senate in Fall of 2006 and ASUCD President in Winter of 2007. He endorsed most of the candidates that ended up victorious in these elections.

Rob Roy has twice been a candidate for Davis City Council. In 2006 he received 1,517 votes (5.51%) and in 2008 he received 4,504 votes (12.1%). In both attempts he spent less than $250 while the winners of the election spent between $25,000 and $50,000. You can still read his platform at [WWW]VoteRobRoy.org and you can also internet befriend his campaign at [WWW]myspace.com/VoteRobRoy (or [WWW]on facebook) because, who knows, maybe he'll run again.

Rob Roy's old house was featured in a [WWW]article in the Sacramento News and Review.

The California Aggie also did a [WWW]student profile on him .

Rob Roy says, "Go Ags!"

Some people hate Rob Roy so much that they want to burn his house down.

It should also be noted that Rob used to live at the Pirate Ship, 720 (the house with the Bomb Shelter), and the Turtle House. In his pirate days he was considered the Party King Of Davis but those days are over.

Rob Roy is also an accomplished and active poet. Most notably, he ran Write Club until it was shut down by the University Administration due to complaints stemming from first amendment right being expressing at an on campus poetry writing. Rob used to run the now defunct [WWW]WriteClub.net.

Below is one of Rob's poems, lifted from the Write Club site.

Rob Roy also has incredible "linking abilities," as demonstrated by this page.

Rob Roy is a man made with Scotch, sweet Vermouth and bitters. He's sometimes called a Scotch Manhattan because he substitutes scotch for the bourbon used in the standard Manhattan recipe.

"UC Davis Quad in March, 2003"

(Taken from the Write Club site)

These two green rectangles fixed
parallel to make a square,
a fresh-air July oven,
or a giant January puddle.

This is the Tiananmen Square of California,
hollowed ground of revolutionary ideas -
framed by overflowing bike racks
and blessed with immigrants
that may still have air breathed in Asia
not yet exhaled from their lungs.

This emerald El Dorado of Atzlan,
a lunch time dining spot where Tex Mex burritos
that are formed and served by the children
of Anglo accountants and Asian engineers
are consumed as quickly as the pace of globalization
by the children of Anglo engineers and Asian accountants.
The Chicanos eat along, counting their French fries
until there are none, and forget
that the Mayans first realized the number zero.

Upon human chests, a Taj Mahal of gold
and blue school spirit is erected;
as our pride gallops as a noble mustang
through this golden state prairie of higher education.

Huddles, and groups, and bunches
of people gathered and placed
by the arbitration of the laws of personal space,
as if replicating the boundaries that form the nations of Africa.
A continent of dialects within these few acres of land.

Of these two separate rectangles,
the west is for Israel
and the east is for Palestine.
This lunchtime Jerusalem separated, not
by a barbed wired fence, but a four-foot wide walkway.
A Gaza Strip of concrete
surrounded by a Mosque of shade (pointing to Mecca),
a synagogue of shade (building a kissing wall of cool air),
a cathedral of shade (with tree branches casting a shadow of a crucifix),
and the sunlight, glowing like eternal springtime Zen,
heats the grass and the breeze
so they are as warm as blood pumping in veins.

More of his poetry can be found on [WWW]his Write Club page.

2005-04-29 01:30:33   Rob Roy is my personal hero. I only joined the Davis Wiki because a friend of mine did, and honestly didn't really care that much about it. But then I checked it tonight, and to my utter amazement my page looked beautiful. And it's all because Rob Roy is a computer genius. Many thanks, oh high mucky muck of Davis Wiki formatting knowledge. —StephanieRoss

2005-12-08 10:42:29   I finished reading the epic novel of your ASUCD election. It would make a great movie. Too bad nobody had the foresight to follow you around with a camera to document your campaign as it unfolded. The art/poetry police expulsion incident is unbelievable. RE photo: The Abe-Roy is SO much better than the "clean cut" Roy. —SteveDavison

2005-12-13 21:31:19   Your set at the Delta last night showed swift improvement from last time I heard you. I found myself saying lines from the "Once you've got love in your blood" song to myself today, in particular the "catching my breath" refrain. The wordplay is refreshing. The chords are very abrasive to my tastes, but there definitely is something to be said for being uncompromising. —BrianAng

2006-07-13 01:05:07   Interesting tidbit: I've met Wayne Huizenga several times via a couple different routes and attended the wedding of his personal assistant (really cool woman I worked with for awhile). He's got one heck of a reputation in South Florida, either good or bad depending on who you talk to, but few people (at least those who care about such things) have less than strong feelings about him. He's got his fingers in more local pies down there than the Maloof family does in Sacramento (and just like the Maloofs, is primarily known to the public just for the sports team he owns). —JabberWokky

2006-07-27 13:44:17   Rob, when can we pick up the cone certificates from you? —PhilipNeustrom

2006-11-13 23:48:15   Rob! If I could vote for you, I would (you until graduation would be better than some I've been seeing). What's with the Wiki making me a Republican? 2007-02-04 22:02:19   Yeah, I wasn't so sure about Ostrowski's changing it to "Independent" because that seems to imply all independents are running together on a slate, which is most definitely not the case. —MaxMikalonis

2007-03-01 14:20:48   Hey, Rob, hope all is well. I know Phil left my two BBQs at your house for a party... a while back, and a variety of problems kept me from just swinging by right away to get them. (I honestly never realized I'd have to get them back myself until afterward, since I wasn't the one who brought them over.) But anyway, do they still exist and can I get them back? —JaimeRaba

2007-03-07 19:14:19   Thanks, Rob. Once I pick my truck up from the repair shop (where it's spent a near-eternity), my first act will be to get my BBQs back. I honestly, could live without both of them— would it be useful to you and your housemates to keep one? —JaimeRaba

2008-05-27 22:11:30   Hi Rob! How is James Walker worse than Judge Fall? I'm aware that both are conservative, but James Walker is characterized as "conservative" whereas Judge Fall is described as "moderate". But both are far right-wingers. I'm interested in your assessment. —CurlyGirl26

2008-05-28 00:39:29   Hi there, another person asked me if I was Rob Roy the other day at the seven eleven. About a month ago Rob was substitute teaching at my kid's school and one of the teachers thought he was me. Does anyone else think we look alike? —DagonJones lookalike.JPG

2008-05-28 02:20:02   I could see it —StevenDaubert

2008-06-05 11:29:03   I'm disappointed Rob didn't get more votes. He would have been a really good addition to the council. At the very least he really should try to get on a commission or two and get involved in some community service organizations. That is really the way to win in this town. —PeteWillits

2008-06-05 14:28:55   While I agree with Pete that the way to get elected is to get on commissions and whatnot, that also leads to more Davis Politics as Usual. Rob has been a refreshing breeze of independent thinking, living one's values, and NOT being part of the establishment that is putting the city at long term financial risk. Go Rob! —RocksandDirt

2008-06-05 18:16:02   Don't worry guys, third time is the charm —StevenDaubert

2008-06-05 23:01:16   I for one am glad you ran — you had my vote — and hope to see you run again. Keep fighting the good fight. —CovertProfessor

2008-06-08 16:06:11   Ok so here is my take on the Roy campaign, I hope this doesn't come off too negative because I really like the guy. I think Rob Roy had a great stance on the issues and ran a very clean campaign (in terms of money). In fact, originally, after reading information on all the candidates, he was my second or third choice (behind Greenwald, and tied with Cecilia) and hence I was going to vote for him. However, after listening to him in the debates I changed my mind. I felt he came unprepared and fumbled around and didn't really state any of his ideas clearly. Before I never even considered his lack of experience (I even voted for him the previous year), but after the debates I saw his lack of experience as a major minus; I was no longer confident in how he would handle being a council member. (I have talked to several people after the election and asked them who they voted for and why, and kept hearing similar statements to mine about the debates). I really hope he serves on a commission or two before his next run. I think he would make a great council member with some more experience. I DONT think that if he serves on commissions he will become a politics as usual candidate. In gaining experience he will be able to fight for his good causes more effectively. I wish Roy the best, and hope he wins some time in the future. —MattHh

2009-03-21 13:44:15   I like your poem about the UCD Quad. Aren't you taking off pretty soon? Happy trails to you! —TimMatthiessen

2010-05-21 16:33:15   Rob, if by chance you see this please contact me so I can give you a phone number so we can talk in person and not text, I would like to ask you a few questions —StevenDaubert

2010-06-27 01:17:04   Thanks! —StevenDaubert

2010-10-21 09:53:16   Cool song! —JabberWokky

2010-11-30 06:48:49   I think you mistyped "Broadway & Demonbreun" as "Broadway & Demonbruen" on Soundcloud. I live on 21st, which is Broadway when it bends about a mile north of me (and is roughly where Demonbreun starts). Great mix, by the way! —JabberWokky

2010-12-15 23:40:43   sighting =/= citing. Or you could doing something sort of clever and say "site-ing" like citing but referring to a web*site* but most people wouldn't get it.... —OliviaY

2011-02-14 23:55:11   It wasn't just the coupon. —WilliamLewis

2011-03-28 18:31:02   The first time I ever met Rob Roy sometime in 2004, he was drunk-dancing naked on top of a table outside Delta Venus. That about sums up the "Party King of Davis" days. —Chronoz

2011-05-11 11:42:14   YaAAAAAAAAAAAAAa

sweet update —StevenDaubert

2011-11-26 07:03:30   I wasn't sure either what was a good place when I put the survey from Users/EdgarWai in the The Issue of Resignation... section. Please let me know if you think of something. I'll think about it later. —BruceHansen

2013-10-04 14:19:19   Rob Roy is a hell of a guy. He has fantastic taste in many things. I remember when he and a few mad dreamers tried to clean up ASUCD and did pretty well. We need more people like Rob Roy. We need people who say enough is enough. We need more people with brains, and heart and courage. And a sense of humor. —gdnystrom
