I'm fairly sure I always immediately drove back to the store and got what they needed, and only asked for payment when the delivery was complete. The driver loses out on some money, since they're making two trips while only getting paid for one (at Round Table, we got $1 per stop to cover gas/maintenance/whatever, since we used our own cars)... but it's pretty unusual that it's not the driver's fault. Not a strong enough opinion to delete the empty seeds, as you can see. -jw
- -----
- Were you denied access to edit the front page, or was it just a problem with turning off the alert? To turn off the alert, you need to switch which includes are being shown. Here's how that portion of the front page code looks now that Philip has turned it off:
-
- {{{
- ## ==================== Community Alerts
- ## Before enabling a community alert consider if it would be better as a Featured Page or Event. Community alerts are ultra-high profile emergency notices regarding very time sensitive and temporary items such as boil water orders, weather alerts or a missing child. Try to keep them limited to items that the people living in Davis should all be alerted to, no matter who they are. Think of it as the Wiki emergency broadcast system.
- ## To Enable a community alert, use:
- ## [[Include(Community Alert, "Community Notice", left, 48%)]][[Include(Featured Page, "Featured Page", right)]]
- ## Otherwise, use:
- [[Include(Featured Page, "Featured Page", right)]]
- }}}
- If you wanted to turn alerts back on, you'd remove to two hash marks in front of this line:
- {{{
- ## [[Include(Community Alert, "Community Notice", left, 48%)]][[Include(Featured Page, "Featured Page", right)]]
- }}}
- and add two hash marks in front of this line:
- {{{
- [[Include(Featured Page, "Featured Page", right)]]
- }}}
- The two hash marks mean that the text in that line isn't read when the website is generating the display shown to users viewing the page. So, when you add hashes to line that includes the Community Alert on the left side and the Featured Page on the right, and unhash the one that only has the Featured Page on the right, you're pulling Community Alert out of the left column, but leaving featured page in the right column.
-
- Maybe that's all stuff you already knew and the problem was something else. Good. --cp
- -----
- Wes, would you want to say something about who Spencer Collins was? --["Users/BruceHansen"]
- * Spencer was a 36 year old kid in a man's body. Born in Santa Ana on April 10, 1976 and (now that we have heard from the coroner) passed away on Sunday July 24th, 2011. We did not know this until this morning. He worked in many different jobs through his life but only found happiness when working for Starbucks. He transferred to Davis in 2003 which is where I first met him. He always had a good story, a laugh to share and a genuine love for life, which is how he and I became friends. In the summer of 2009, he was laid off from Starbucks after working there for nearly a decade. A good portion of his joy was taken from his life when this happened because he truly loved his job and was one of the best managers the company ever had.
-
- We would hang out together with another mutual friend of ours, Bethany, and always had a really great time. He was just silly and never angry about anything. One thing he could do that always made everyone else either giggle or question how it was done was laugh genuinely without ever cracking even the hint of a smile. He used to say it always made him dizzy doing it, but did it anyway because it made others smile. He was always willing to help anyone from the best of friends to the homeless man on the street, even after losing his job.
-
- In the Winter of '09-'10 he was diagnosed with acute pneumonia and had to be hospitalized for a week. Even then, he would call his friends to tell them a joke or to see how his dog, Cooper, was doing. After he was released, he went right back to being his jovial self, even though he was a bit tired. He never complained once until he again was diagnosed with pneumonia in late 2010 and again was medicated. He bounced right back again and continued to bring joy to all those around him. That was Spencer.
-
- According to the coroner's report we just heard today, he passed away on Sunday after feeling overly tired and falling asleep to never wake again. It was a mystery lung infection he wasn't aware of. No one had seen him or spoken to him since Saturday evening when he spent some time with a friend just returning from Africa. His neighbors called the police after hearing his dog barking and whimpering for several hours and a welfare check was initiated with the Davis PD. This was on Tuesday July 26th at 12:50pm according the the police bulletins. His family was notified shortly after and all of us here in Davis found out on Wednesday morning/afternoon July 27th. Several of us were shocked, angry and confused and most still are, although knowing the circumstances of his death alleviates a good portion of the stress and frustration, it still remains.
-
- Several of us are doing different fundraisers. I am running one at the door of Little Prague tonight, there is going to be a bake sale and car wash and flyers will be posted around town for that. One of us has set up a bank account specifically to handle all the funds for this and the money will go towards two things:
- - A cremation service (which was his desire) and
- - two memorial services (one in Davis for his Norcal Friends and Family, one in Santa Ana for his hometown Friends and Family).
-
- He was a great person and one which I have never known another to be like in my lifetime. Never upset, never worrisome, always smiling and laughing. I was truly fortunate to have known him for the few short years I did and feel blessed for each moment shared with him. He is greatly missed.
- -----
- Thank you for sharing this about your friend. I never got to meet Spencer, but your writing makes me wish I had. He sounds very much like an individual who benefited everyone he encountered. --["Users/ScottMeehleib"]
- * I agree; it sounds like he was a fine fellow who enriched the world. As the quote goes, "a heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved." My condolences to you and all those who knew him. --["Users/JabberWokky" Evan 'JabberWokky' Edwards]
- * Thank you, all of you, who have shared these kind words. Spencer truly was 'That Guy', the one everyone loved and respected. Right now it's all just too surreal for me... I'm still kind of in a daze about the whole thing... Do me a favor though will you? Find someone you like or love but rarely speak to and just let them know how much you care for them.. you never know, it might be the last time you speak... Never truly believed that until this moment... I miss my friend... -Wes
- -----
- I hadn't reviewed the page to see other stuff. I'm certainly willing to trust your take on it; input from a one-shot anonymous account is a very different matter, without you sounding off as well. Anyway, just to make sure it's clear: I appreciate your input on it. I'm going to ''try'' to keep my mouth shut on most of this crap over the next day or two, or just take a wiki break. If I fail at that and start snapping at people, you should know you aren't included in the category of slapdickery I'm likely to complain about. --tg
- -----
- Hey Wes, I think the ball is in your court on the ["Users/BruceHansen/Talk"] page. While everyone agrees that it would not be good if multiple people were using the BH account, some are doubtful that this is happening. One reason is BH's own denial. A second reason is BH's distinctive editing style. If someone is using a laptop, smartphone, etc., and going to different cafés and such, then multiple IPs are going to be the result, so that in itself isn't necessarily a sign of anything. So, if there is more to say about your conversations that would help clear things up, then you should say them. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]
- -----
- Because user pages are for, well, users -- better known as editors. They exist so that editors can introduce themselves to one another and so they can communicate with one another. EWB is not an editor. Furthermore, it's been discussed before that user pages should not be a way to get around the non-promotional nature of the wiki. That is, while generally people can do what they want with a user page, there are limits. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]
- ------
- Yep, pretty much everything is (regulated by the editing community, that is). But if you mean we should keep an eye on it, yes, I agree. There are definitely pages that have slipped through the cracks. --cp
- -----
- Just to be clear, the proposal to ban Josh wasn't based on him being offensive. It was based on him trying to use the Wiki to damage people's well-being in the real world. I don't particularly care whether someone calls me an asshole or a commie. I do care when someone tries to degrade other people and destroy their reputation on the wiki, and I care about the long-term impact that may have on participation. --["Users/TomGarberson"]
- ------
- I genuinely like Josh. I spent some time chatting with him in person at the Wiki BBQ, and I not only have zero problem with him, I think he's a fine fellow. I don't have a problem with a bit of gruff nature and emphatic beliefs. He did crash and burn a couple times on the wiki out of frustration (as have many people, including both of us), and his personality translates poorly to the written word. It's hard to explain how I view him, and I know it perplexes some people (like Tom). I did see him terrorizing people, and that's a real, serious problem. I also don't see it as a mechanical issue, but rather a serious social issue where certain types of people just don't get along. In any group -- if this an effort to film Davis, rather than write about it, and we were all in a room together -- there are going to be people who interact and explode. And Josh's personality is one of those who is prone to cause explosive mixtures. A few times he outright abused people, and that hurts the wiki as a project and as an inviting community. Honestly, it's the same area of concern as William's harsh nature (which derives from an entirely different place, but the end result is similar). The problem of people who, by their social manner, drive people away from the group is not unique to the wiki at all. And the people on the wiki handle it the same way as most any open group: when a fumbled, harsh or bitter introduction is made, people rush to the new person, say "yeah, they mean well; you'll get used to them", and try to reach out to the new person before they are driven away. We've all seen it. We've made the decision to be inclusive and open, and not everybody who participates on the wiki is going to be (or wants to be) riding the welcome wagon. Josh wanted to call out the injustice and hypocrisy he saw, and William cares more about content than people (both being a very primitive oversimplification). Other people, like Tom and CP, really care about making sure people are happy, even if it means glossing over some things or dropping or delaying certain discussions. These are all at odds sometimes. But that's the nature of a really open group: you have people who don't prioritize the same way, and who have different skill sets. -jw
- * Extremely well written, JW. I swear the majority of the above paragraph needs to be included in the Welcome to the Wiki page somehow... -- Wes
- -----
- Why did you delete your Peasano's comment? I found it helpful. I too am disappointed with the lack of good Italian food here in Davis and yearn for something better. --cp
- -----
- Ah, ok, so maybe you will put a new comment after you've thought about it for awhile. Never a good idea to edit while in a bad mood (though we all do it!). The lasagna definitely sounds unappealing, and actually, the menu itself just isn't a big draw for me. What I really want is some good old fashioned Italian-American food: lasagna (with the traditional noodles!), baked ziti, eggplant parm, etc. But no place in Davis does that, or does it well. :( --cp
-
- Could I be cruel enough to say I just polished off some Baked Ziti with pieces of Eggplant and Zucchini my wife made???? Guess so :):) --["Users/PeterBoulay"]
- Yeah after my wife recovered from the Spring Gall Bladder Fiasco, she started getting interested in cooking again..the results are well, delicious.--["Users/PeterBoulay"]
- -----
- I really liked the Sacramento location when I went but...if you walk in expecting Italian food I can see why you'd be disappointed. I think of it as yummy bistro food, the crab artichoke dip being especially memorable, but that's about it. The pizza isn't too bad either but I'd just go to Vitos for that since they are owned by the same family. It's too bad they are pricey or I'd be pushing for date night soon so I could try the new Davis location. Hey at least it isn't more Thai!--oy
- -----
- I think the answer to the question you ask, about whether you are in the minority in thinking the way you do about groups for particular ethnicities, etc., depends on who you're polling. People who edit the wiki? Davisites at large? White people? Members of minority groups? Californians? U.S.? Etc. I can assure you that you aren't the only one who thinks that way, but I can also assure you that there are many people who disagree. Again, I'd ask you to think about whether you really have the evidence to think that groups promote the sort of divisiveness that you suggest. Here is another way to think about it. People who are in those groups are already told daily, whether directly by prejudiced actions or indirectly by TV, media, etc., that they are different and lesser. Girls are told that they can't do math and that they aren't very smart (there were some lovely pink shirts from JC Penney recently that proclaimed this). Black people are mostly portrayed on TV as drug dealers and thugs. There was one study that would break your heart, showing little black children picking out a white doll over a black doll, saying that they black doll was bad; these lessons are learned early. I remember a Hispanic high school teacher friend of mine telling me he had to go to work in a suit every day because otherwise people assumed he was the janitor or the gardener. And look at Congress -- still, largely white male. I'm not saying that just because someone is a white male that they have it easy, because you and I know that isn't true. I'm also not saying that most people are deliberately racist or sexist; I think a lot of these beliefs are unconscious; we all have them, including the minorities themselves. But I am saying that to be a minority in this culture is to be bombarded with messages that you are different and lesser, and these groups exist because of that prejudice. If we ever manage to get to a point where that is not the case, then I'll probably agree with you that there is no longer a reason for such groups to exist. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]
- -----
- http://www.amazon.com/Black-Kids-Sitting-Together-Cafeteria/dp/0465083617 Maybe check that out if you are genuinely interested in the subject. I know that as a white girl with the "barbie hair" I will never, ever, ever be able to understand what black girls deal with w/r to their hair. Or Asian girls who I have also heard hair stories from. This is totally fragmented on here and I'm sure you weren't thinking about hair but my point is that there are reasons why, not even minorities, but just people with common descent/background tend to "group" together. Within my circle of Jewish friends conversations often fall to how, non-Jews, just can't understand certain things we do/think/feel. Kosher and Halal rules for eating today serve less as religious guidelines and more as a way of being a cultural identifier that people who follow them yearn for. I don't think that will ever change unless we lose all concept of individual identity AND cultural identity in the world. As a big proponent of individualism I think that would kind of suck. Anyway the book is interesting. --oy
- -----
- Yes! (Luigis) -- oy
- -----
- Wes, I don't think anyone was upset by your starting the dialogue about the race page. I know that I wasn't. It's good to have discussions about things like this, in my opinion. As for the 24/7 taxi, that is totally on him and not at all on you. As you said, he just lashed his anger out at everyone rather than simply answering the question. --["Users/CovertProfessor"]
- -----
- Re the race-specific groups, I've always found it an interesting topic. And you're absolutely right, that page has the potential to end up hurting people. It hasn't thus far, though. --["Users/WilliamLewis"]
- -------
- Yep. Important topic, probably not the right place. There's a heck of a lot of interesting thought being written, so as a temporary blip, I like it. As a Talk page, I think it's a great deal healthier than many we've had lately. It's a trouble prone topic, but it's also (as I write this) a shining example of the ability of people to get along on the wiki about an actual meaningful subject. I do like the opportunity to hear people's views on the topic. -jw
- * well stated, Evan. The problem is that it doesn't really help all that much, as a cab doing business without a license in Davis is still part of Davis and should be on the wiki. Prostitution and other outright illegal activities are also listed. The wiki isn't a business database, it just documents what goes on in Davis, licensed or not. Of course, I'm making some assumptions about where you were going with that idea, so if you have a different direction you were thinking about, please share! -jw
- * Right on point. It is about what is within Davis, and with this in mind, the wiki is here to inform the citizens of Davis of the ins and outs, the positives as well as the negatives. I feel that the information should available to all residents of Davis and would definitely fulfill all the objectives of the Wiki as well as the residents on an informational level. I would certainly like to know which cabs were licensed and which were not when making that choice for a ride, wouldn't you? -- Wes
- * Oh, certainly. Some people have asserted that if a place isn't licensed, it shouldn't be on the wiki (we ran into that with the computer repair places, I think). I thought that's where you were going with this. The actual license info makes sense to put up (or note the lack of it, if it's notable for that type of business -- most computer repair places don't seem to bother getting licensed, for instance, so a lack of a license isn't a big deal. A plumber, on the other hand, is notable). -jw
- -----
- Honestly, I think this will create more problems than it solves. Within my circle of Jewish friends conversations often fall to how, non-Jews, just can't understand certain things we do/think/feel. Kosher and Halal rules for eating today serve less as religious guidelines and more as a way of being a cultural identifier that people who follow them yearn for. -jw

Users/Wes-Phttp://daviswiki.org/Users/Wes-P2011-09-14 12:06:33CovertProfessor
Differences for Users/Wes-P

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 88:

Line 88:

- Ah, ok, so maybe you will put a new comment after you've thought about it for awhile.
-
- He was a great person and one which I have never known another to be like in my lifetime. Never upset, never worrisome, always smiling and laughing. I was truly fortunate to have known him for the few short years I did and feel blessed for each moment shared with him. He is greatly missed.
-
- We have set up a bank account specifically to handle all the funds for this and the money will go towards two things:
- - A cremation service (which was his desire) and
- - two memorial services (one in Davis for his Norcal Friends and Family, one in Santa Ana for his hometown Friends and Family).
-
- For anyone who knew him, whether as their favorite Barista at Starbucks or as a friend, we have set up a donation fund to help his family with the services. Donations made be made anonymously @ the USE Credit Union.
-
- -->Checks/Money Orders payable to: Jennifer Valdez
- Mail to: USE Credit Union, 200 B St., Davis, Ca 95616
- '''Include on the Memo Line: 80957370-1/Spencer'''<--
-
- All funds raised and collected will go towards a beautiful service for him as well as keepsakes and fare for his family to attend.

+ Apr. 10, 1974-found July 26, 2011 He was a great person and one which I have never known another to be like in my lifetime.

Users/Wes-Phttp://daviswiki.org/Users/Wes-P2011-08-28 19:18:47Wes-PImage Wes.jpg deleted.
