My name is Wes Pierce.

I am a regular citizen, an average American. An often quiet political thinker and a practical joker on a sarcastic journey. There is nothing funny or sarcastic about the current state of affairs within our city limits or in our nation.

I could easily claim to be a part of the 99%, more aptly I would fall into the category of the lower 15% earning enough to live from paycheck to paycheck but not much else. Overqualified or too old for many jobs and under-qualified or under certified for many others. Lacking the resources to improve greatly within any reasonable time period and yet, somehow, content with this position. I have been silent, for the most part, in regards to the extreme disparity between the wealthy elite and the devastatingly poor in this country. Recent events have begun to alter that perspective.

Anger subsides as reason prevails and I have been thoroughly impressed with both Campus officials and protestors alike. I have been active with recent issues since the events that occurred on our campus here in Davis on Friday, November 13th. I have attended every meeting, every GA, and have spoken with several hundred protestors and a few faculty members including Vice-Chancellor Wood about these issues and must say that I am proud that I can see first hand what myself and so many other vets served for is happening, as it should, non-violently.

I view some of the issues being protested as very real threats to our nations democratic success. Personally, I don't care if someone wants to earn more than another. I don't truly care if they pay the same percentage of taxes as I do or anything of the sort. I do care about the loss of opportunity to those who are less financially well off than others. When costs continue to rise to the point where things like education become exclusive perks of the wealthy, there is a significant problem with the way the nation is being governed. "Work hard and be diligent" is quickly becoming an obsolete catch-phrase as it is now extremely difficult for a huge portion of this nations citizenry to even maintain the basic cost of living, let alone owning vehicles, obtaining higher education or basic healthcare. I am now joining the cause, in my own way, in hopes that a sense of balance may be restored to the populace. I don't want to punish the wealthy nor do I want the poor (middle and lower class citizens) to suffer any longer in the day to day struggle of "staying afloat". Something needs to change and it needs to happen soon. I would urge others to act, in their own ways, to equalize the opportunities in this great nation and in this fine city I call home.

2011-11-24 18:40:23   What did you order at Taste of Thai? I only get stuff with tofu rather than meat, and they do the tofu superbly. If you ever go back try the Pad Khee Mao. Definitely one of the better dishes they offer. I still prefer Thai Nakorn for curries but ToT has better noodle dishes and stir fry. —OliviaY

2011-11-30 13:09:26   Wes, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Please accept my deepest condolences. —CovertProfessor

2011-11-30 16:01:00   I get the idea that you've had a fairly rough time of late, in terms of tragedy befalling people you've known. My thoughts and best wishes are with you. —JabberWokky

2011-12-11 21:37:33   Yeah, but that's part of the problem that's cropped up in the past. I figured I'd ask nicely before somebody jumped all over them. I'm also content to simply ask until there's an actual issue. —JabberWokky

2012-01-01 21:08:18   Hey Wes, any thoughts on how to tie Ban the editors into the greater wiki scheme? Maybe in Wiki Community? —TomGarberson

2012-01-02 13:26:29   There are some wiki folklore entries out there. They are a bit hard to cross link. Some got moved into Wiki Community, while others kind of sit out there, hidden gems. —JabberWokky

2012-01-23 10:48:05   Wow, that's an obnoxious driver. Back when I delivered pizzas (summer after freshman year, a very long time ago), I forgot things or brought the wrong pizza a couple of times. I'm fairly sure I always immediately drove back to the store and got what they needed, and only asked for payment when the delivery was complete. The driver loses out on some money, since they're making two trips while only getting paid for one (at Round Table, we got $1 per stop to cover gas/maintenance/whatever, since we used our own cars)... but it's pretty unusual that it's not the driver's fault. I suppose someone might make the wrong pizza, or put the order number on the wrong box, but that's a far less likely explanation, and you should still check. —TomGarbersonTomGarberson
