Favorite Local Restaurants

Burgers and Brew - Decent prices for good burgers. Finally decided that my favorite is the double cheeseburger cooked rare. The heart attack that comes afterward is worth it.

Davis Noodle City - For a couple of dollars, you get a lot of food that tastes really good. I love their spring rolls and their pork chop noodles.

El Mariachi - Been coming here for nachos. Chips have the right amount of crunch without being too hard and the toppings are tasty.

Hot Dogger - I enjoy a good hot dog and this place has really tasty ones. Unfortunately, I do not find hot dogs very filling and need quite a few to fill up, especially if they are this good so I tend to go here for snacks only.

House of Chang - When you do not have a car, delivery food is awesome. They have pretty good food (although Chinese food usually never tastes different no matter where you go) and pretty quick delivery (best record time of delivery is less than sixteen minutes, made call at 6:06PM and got the food at 6:22PM, normally takes thirty minutes). I usually get the Mongolian beef.

Kim's Mart - Technically not a restaurant, but I like their rolls and their [wikipedia]bibimbap. Melon pops are delicious as well.

Silver Dragon - If I am downtown and do not need Chinese food delivered, this place is usually my pick. They have reasonable prices and they have very friendly service (being from the Silicon Valley, I am not used to Asian restaurants having a friendly wait staff).

Sudwerk - Hot wing entree is amazing. I finish one off by myself. Good way to hate on my arteries.

Sunrise Restaurant - I have been slowly trying to go back here now because of my addictions. No hairs so far. I am addicted to their sandwiches (#4 pork and #5) and their honey dew special pearl drink (#32). Their #31 ([WWW]taro with pearl) is great too.

Taqueria Guadalajara - Free chips and you don't have to pay extra for sour cream or guacamole, which is a nice difference from most other burrito places. I either split a Super Giant Burrito or get a Super Burrito.

Village Bakery - My favorite pizza in town. Nice crispy crust. They also have quite a desert selection.

Zia's Delicatessen - I love their roast beef, corned beef, Lucca, and Viareggio. Not sure what they put in their sandwiches but I would eat here everyday if I could.

2011-04-11 10:42:50   Hello, please note that the mcdonald's comparison was added by another user, it originally just said this burrito is just as bad as this McDonalds meal. My opinion would be to delete the whole thing, but if the comparison is going to be made between the 2 meals these comparisons must be accurate. At the time of the original edit, several years ago, mcdonalds had more transfats in their food, so yes I will delete the transfat part. The current edit was just editing writing style as opposed to content, and to add context about sodium and how all restaurants have high sodium content. But in general Chipotles food is way more nutritionally dense than mcdonalds. There is no question that that burrito is better for you than the mcdonalds meal for the average person, it is way more nutritionally dense. Of course they are both bad though. —~~~~ —MattHh

2011-04-26 23:08:41   I'm with Zabace now and I've had a neutral experience. They can be slow to respond to emails (and sometimes don't respond at all until you email a couple more times). One of the places with consistently good reviews has been C.L. Davies Property Management. I talked to her when I was looking for places for September a couple months ago and she was very nice. I didn't end up signing a lease with her, but I spent hoursss researching so figured I'd give you a heads-up. —MeggoWaffle

2011-04-27 14:08:20   Zabace can be pretty bad about emails, but not terrible about problems. I had a problem when I first moved in and insisted on communicating about it via email (so I had a record in case there was an issue) and it took weeks. A later issue, I gave them a call and they fixed it the next day. —MasonMurray

2011-04-27 16:40:43   The deal with geeksquad is they have to charge you $100 just to send someone to your house. It's mostly because they're corperate and have massive insurance policies in case anything ever could possibly be partly their fault. —MasonMurray

2011-05-04 12:36:09   Understandable... I don't think a dispute that's resolved with the ASUCD should be the main focus of a page about CampusCred though. —TomGarberson

2011-05-04 12:42:38   It's what like 5 people on this site have said about CampusCred... I doubt the people who've used it (apparently quite a few now) are too concerned with the issue. It's just like BW shouldn't be defined by the conflict it had with Drom's... it might be worth a note, but it's not what the page is about. —TomGarberson

2011-05-04 12:52:39   I agree there were shady ASUCD dealings... and the shadiness was mainly on the part of the ASUCD for failing to follow its procedures. Seems much more relevant to their page than to CC's. Again, though, it deserves a note as historical info on CC's page, but a page entitled "X" should be (as people have emphasized to Bruce a few times) about X in Davis. The content on CC doesn't reflect CC, it reflects that a few users here on the Wiki really don't like CC's relationship with ASUCD or the way its reps have been pushy on the wiki. —TomGarberson

2011-05-04 12:58:43   I'd say CampusCred's claims of being student owned and run (or the variant that caught my eye) was more shady... and they were still claiming it last I checked (they may not be anymore). By their rationale, so are several fast food chains (as they employ students). —JabberWokky

2011-05-04 13:00:35   Right, I understand the frustration with the crap they've done. I just don't really think wiki content should be punitive. —TomGarberson

2011-05-04 13:23:46   Right, and again, I think noting their bumpy history is totally fine. But right now, almost the entire entry is negative, when that only reflects the (reasonable) views of a few people. Again, I'm not saying that anything you're saying is wrong. I'm just saying that the content on the page is [[Include(Overwhelmed)]]. —TomGarberson

2011-05-04 13:56:04   What do you think of a rewrite along [WWW]these lines? I think it still keeps the complaints, but isn't just a page about the complaints. I noted a couple of spots where I couldn't remember all the details. —TomGarberson

2011-05-04 15:27:12   Reverted to Jabbers comment. While Ricky may be a celebrity to you and the people you play Magic with, I'd never heard of him despite having played magic since fourth. I play very casually. ;) Having a link to him on the Bizarro page is cool, but your phrasing was off for a business description. If you want to add that he's a celebrity elsewhere, like on his page, go for it. —TravisLindquist

2011-05-04 15:28:28   We did expect and can tolerate some spiciness. We eat Kim Chi fairly regularly and enjoy it, but what we were served looked to have an extra measure of oily red pepper sauce. In any case, we didn't get what was described. —JimStewart

2011-05-16 22:52:04   LOL. For a while, I was collecting evidence of their inability to maintain efficient communication between all their "branches", especially in emails, phone logs, etc. And the moment I mention it in an email, and get ready to schedule an appointment with ASUCD's legal services (and probably Yolo County Small Claims), I get a response that says I'm officially unpledged to calpirg, and will receive a refund check for all the quarters I've been pledged. But thanks for the suggestion :D! —Jennyfish

And while I am sure that beer and energy drinks feel like necessities to college students, I'm guessing you know that they really aren't... plus not everyone in Davis is a college student, remember? —CovertProfessor

2011-06-15 12:12:24   Hey, out of curiosity, do you have any experience or have any views on kettlebells? —JabberWokky

2011-06-15 12:31:18   You're right, we are undecided. But that's a Fo' Paws/Talk issue, not a Craft of Fo' Paws/Talk issue. And do you really want to stir up the pot again? Let's try leaving things like this for a little while, and settle Fo' Paws later. —CovertProfessor

2011-06-15 12:48:28   Yeah, me too. But it's only temporary. —CovertProfessor

2011-06-15 12:55:24   I guess if I were sure that he is wrong, I would agree with you. But he may, in fact, have the right to the Fo' Paws name. I just don't want to take the effort to look at his evidence, and I don't want to get involved in legal interpretations, and I don't think the wiki should, either. I think it will become clear at some point that he either has the right to the name or he doesn't, e.g., when he gets an actual location and puts up a sign, creates business cards, etc. —CovertProfessor

2011-06-15 12:57:33   I've been thinking about getting some for Sarah and I because the way they work muscle groups seems like it would be a really nice match to the sword and shield martial arts we do. They are somewhat similar to the offset weights (think something akin to a sledgehammer) that some people use to build up forearm and back strength for heavy weapon combat (heavy weapon means 'armor and heavy sword with a hard blow' rather than the modern 'dance and touch' fencing). Sarah's really gotten into SCA combat in the last couple years, and is sucking me back into it, so I need to get into shape... which isn't a bad thing anyway. I'm just not certain if kettlebells are getting popular based on actual results or if they are just a passing fad because it's the cool thing this year. I know their history, but many things with a long history were replaced with modern methods for good reason. I'm currently leaning toward them being good for certain types of goals, and I think they fit what we're looking for. It's good to know that somebody with experience thinks they are generally useful. —JabberWokky

2011-06-15 13:08:31   Take a look at the Craft page. Is there anything actually wrong? If somebody who acts like an jerk is happy, it doesn't much matter if the reason he's happy is also a good outcome for the project as a whole (i.e., don't "get revenge" at the cost of the wiki). Now, there is the matter of an entry about Fo' Paws, but that's now a distinct subject to work on — and can be framed in a way so that any of the squabbling off wiki has nothing to do with it, as it can simply be focused on the historical information about the business under Charlene Benjamin. —JabberWokky

2011-06-15 14:13:33   For what it's worth, the Davis Business Directory website says "Last update: December 14, 2009" right under the search box. —TomGarberson OMG it's huge - That's what she said.png

2011-07-02 14:23:42   I was under the mistaken impression that the Sutter market was independent from Davis Farmers Market. 2011-07-12 09:01:33   Regarding your question about folks who steal recycling—CRV funds that are not redeemed come back to local jurisdictions in the form of grant money. In theory, if no one redeemed their CRV funds, the Cities and Counties in CA would get more grant money from the State to operate recycling programs. If CRV containers are redeemed at DWR, DWR still gets money for recycling the glass, plastic and cans. When CRV containers are redeemed at the other 2 CRV redemption centers in town, DWR gets none of the recycling money. People taking their OWN recyclables to other CRV redemption centers in town is not a problem. That's a small percentage. People stealing CRV containers is a bigger problem because they take so much more material. This is a double whammy—no grant funds coming back to the City and a decrease in the recycling funds for DWR that help subsidize the cost of collecting the recycling city-wide. I hope that helps to answer your question. —jgilbert

2011-07-15 13:34:57   Thanks man for the suggestion, I will try it out soon. Yeah the couple they looked disappointed because of that. And I explained to them that i had seen it on the Yelp as well, but I didn't know how to take it down, and I told them for 'most recent specials/offers, to go check the wiki' and they said they would. But if you go back in KetMoRee's edits, we had taken it off a while back. Thank you for the suggestion again. —NikhilDahal

2011-07-15 13:45:02   Quick follow up: I sent an update to Yelp moderators, they 'shall review it within a few day's it said. —NikhilDahal

2011-07-17 17:29:32   you don't want to know how much they pay to park there —StevenDaubert

2011-07-25 11:58:01   They aren't paying me anything... but if they're reading this, I'd gladly accept payment in the form of free beer! The Shoppe just does great beer at what I'm pretty sure is a set rate of markup. That's why some beers are $7.99 for an 8-oz pour, while others are $2.99 for a 16-oz (really, 18+ oz) pour. They're definitely not cheap; six-packs of common beers that run $8-ish (not on sale) at the supermarket are typically $9-10 at the Shoppe. They're just fair, which is why it's a pretty good comparison. —TomGarberson

2011-07-26 00:35:19   Hey man thanks for the advice for the Yelp, that one KetMoRee special is no longer up there, would not have been able to change it without your help. And perfect example to tag on to ur quick edit on LittlePrague page, : Picnic Day/Graduation —NikhilDahal

2011-08-18 16:28:13   Ehh... I can kinda understand. I tend to really enjoy a good argument/discussion (or a bad one... hence my profession), but not everyone does. Bekka has said she'll never make an account on the wiki simply because if she says something anyone disagrees with, she'll have to waste hours and hours discussing it to death. I can't say I blame her. When I'm feeling non-contentious, it's the same reason I stay the hell out of stuff (like several discussions over the last few days). —TomGarberson

2011-08-19 10:59:42   Good luck with the move. —JabberWokky

2011-08-19 22:06:47   What happened with Stonegate Storage? Cause I have a truck reserved for Friday and would really prefer they don't eff my move up. —MeggoWaffle

2011-08-23 21:08:33   Just from GuerreroVillarealLopez's page. I don't know why he deleted the link, but if it is real group (even a group that's just for fun), we should definitely link to it from somewhere. Sorry to hear you're still internet-less. —CovertProfessor

2011-08-23 21:23:22   I know what you mean. I need someone to cut off my Internet access. —CovertProfessor

2011-08-28 11:56:09   What a blasphemous comment on LaundryLounge's page! —NikhilDahal

2011-08-30 16:07:41   Seemed OK to me. Looked like they really were coming to Davis and that they really would pay money. The fact that it's an out-of-towner posting it doesn't bother me. —CovertProfessor

2011-08-30 16:17:14   Ah. Somehow I was picturing this happening at a local bar. It does mention a "bar tab" as part of your "payment." —CovertProfessor

2011-08-30 16:23:28   Well, it's a short-term part-time job, right? "What's in it for you: $50 a night plus a $25 bar tab for three hours of work. You host the quiz, you blog about it, you get paid." I assumed "host" meant "emcee". I thought maybe someone might want the money, even if it's not full-time regular employment. —CovertProfessor

2011-08-30 16:43:08   Well, we do see a lot of it. After awhile everything seems suspicious. In fact, I am starting to suspect you. —CovertProfessor

2011-09-05 13:35:59   I had chicken fries a couple days ago

super bomb —StevenDaubert

2011-09-13 21:05:22   I supported it when it wasn't causing people to think Josh was a jerk or being used on people who were honestly trying to figure stuff out and didn't know the inside joke. Heh... you know I am not against humor on the wiki, and sometimes a bit of parody is exactly what's needed to let everybody laugh and move on. Personally, it's the fact that people keep thinking it's Josh that gets me. I just don't think that's fair to the guy. —JabberWokky

2011-09-13 23:40:39   yeah (i think) most employees do have to move their car every 2 hours, i know that some business offices downtown have special parking spaces for their employees, but for street parking during the day during downtown, it is a 2hr limit. —ndah100

2011-09-13 23:45:04   4 new businesses opening up in Downtown Davis between May2011-November2011. 30k+ more people coming in within 2 weeks. You do the math. —ndah100

2011-09-14 00:02:42   I thot u quit working at LP? —ndah100

2011-09-14 00:10:48   My advice still goes

Many restaurants opening up, 30k more students
I do not know the conditions of you leaving LP, but if it was good I'm sure you can get your former boss to give a good word out to a local bar

2011-09-14 00:11:38   If you don't mind me asking, which places you looking at? —ndah100

2011-09-14 00:21:23   ndahal0 at gmail dot com I understand what you mean yeah send me an email man. I am getting of night —ndah100

2011-09-19 14:12:14   Grr! So furious! Or I just opened them all in tabs and was editing them all before I even noticed you were editing too... one or the other. Heh. That's a nice edit; I just try to keep the markup simple. —JabberWokky

2011-09-19 14:13:24   Mary P. Perez, MA, MFT and John Evans, Handyman need some love, too. —JabberWokky

2011-09-19 14:16:17   Ha! If we both picked the same name independently, it's probably a good one. So you were starting with the links, going to add the page, and I added the page and then added the links. I didn't even realize you were doing it too until I was done. I got the edit conflict on Davis Dollars with the linkshere(), but I figured somebody just saw me create the Accepts Davis Dollars and was trying to help out. —JabberWokky

2011-09-19 14:38:04   You've heard that great minds think alike? Well apparently so do ours. —JabberWokky
