We've run into some snags with the way Linux deals with the BIOS/memory, but ["AmitVainsencher"] is hard at work trying to get everything settled.
- What exactly is the issue? Is it SMP related? What kernel are you running, stock or compile yourself? Compiling your own kernel for your own hardware situation can solve alot of problems. If you compile only one thing yourself, it should be the kernel. -["NickSchmalenberger"]
- The issue is a pathological one associated with the 32-bit compatibility cruft in the BIOS. We have 4GB of memory for the system, which would use up all 32-bit addressable space on the system. Linux's and the BIOS' solution is to implement a memory hole wherein only 3GB is 32-bit addressable, and the other 1GB of addressable space is saved for legacy devices (there are devices integrated on the board which require this). The other 1GB of physical memory is mapped out of range of these devices. If everything was done correctly by the BIOS and OS, everything would be peachy, but evidently something is being done wrong.
- The problem is manifests itself in random correctable/uncorrectable ECC memory errors or kernel panics in memory management kernel calls. There's a lot of people out there that have the same problem right now, as of kernel 2.6.15's release. Removing any one of the DIMMs (thus reducing to 3GB physical memory) solves the issue. Also, disabling one of the cores on the processor seems to solve it. Seeing as how neither of these are acceptable solutions, I'm still investigating what's possible. My current situation's promising... The system's been up for 4+ hours of stress testing, where in the past it hasn't survived more than 1.5 without showing symptoms. As for your kernel-related question, I'm currently using the first gentoo-patched release of 2.6.15, which I've configured by hand. (No desktops, nor towers.) Rack rails aren't necessary, but they help. A cable management arm may not fit if it's on a long server.
+
+ Power: 2A is mostly a guideline to make sure we don't get carried away with unnecessarily power consumptive equipment. More is available, but probably won't be necessary.
+
+ IP addresses: We'll probably only need one public static IP address, but more are available if they're used wisely.
+
+ Bandwidth consumption: 512Kbps@95% means that most of the time (24h/7d), the site is transferring data to/from clients at a cumulative rate of 512Kbps. DavisWiki and RocWiki combined are not likely to use even half that any time soon. Even so, bandwidth consumption (and its associated cost) is the most significant variable.
+
+ Physical access: Granting physical access to Cernio's cabinet space means granting physical access to Cernio's equipment as well as to the DavisWiki equipment. It requires an RFID-embedded picture ID, biometric (hand print, body shape, total weight) verification, and a key. Physical access will not be granted casually.
